Troy - Leola Morris Mernit, 89, of Troy, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center after a long illness.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, she was daughter of the late Robert and Theresa Perrin Morris. Following graduation from Girls High School, she worked as a private secretary for the Crown Can Co. before joining the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in World War II.
During her armed services career, she obtained the rank of Lieutenant and distinguished herself in 1943 by becoming the first woman Army officer at Rome (NY) Army Air Field.
A newspaper account at the time said that she "successfully overcame whatever prejudices existed at the time against female officers in uniform and, because of her success, she paved the way for the hundreds of other WAC officers and enlisted women who have followed her."
A resident of Flushing, NY, for over 40 years, she was the wife of the late Benjamin Memit of New York City. Mrs. Memit is survived by her daughter, Arlene Mernit Sampson (Mrs. David) of Troy, and two grandsons, Christopher Sampson of Charlottesville, Va., and James Sampson of New York City. She was predeceased by one sister, Janet Morris Fearon, and two brothers, Perrin and Robert J. Morris.

Nancy A. Duffey Markle, 54
North Greenbush - Nancy A. Duffey Markle, 54, of Fairfax Avenue, died Thursday at her home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness.
Born in Troy, she was daughter of Elizabeth M. Fitzpatrick Duffey of Wynantskill and the late William G. Duffey and wife of David M. Markle. She was a lifelong resident of Wynantskill and was a 1966 graduate of Catholic Central High School.
Nancy was a customer service representative for the New York State Motor Vehicle Title Bureau in Albany for 25 years, retiring in August of 2002.
She was a member of CSEA and a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Wynantskill. She enjoyed arts and crafts on Friday nights in her home with her family and friends.
Survivors in addition to her husband and mother include two daughters, Colleen A. Reo of Clifton Park and Lori A. McGrath of Waterford; a son, Richard D. Markle of Wynantskill; a sister, Patricia A. Martone of Troy; a brother, Timothy Duffey of Albany; two grandchildren Austin and Jillian McGrath; her father-in-law, Melvin Markle of Poestenkill; a sister-in-law Diane Vincent (Jim) of Loudonville and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 9:00am from the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. corner of Pawling and Maple Avenues Troy and at 9:30am from St. Jude the Apostle Church in Wynantskill where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 3-7pm. Interment Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.

James J. Markham, 69
West Sand - Lake James J. Markham, 69, of Climer Circle, died Monday at Albany Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was a devoted husband and father. Born in Troy, he was son of the late Chester and Rose Pollay Markham and husband of Gail Markham. He was raised in Troy, resided in Watervliet and for the past 38 years in West Sand Lake and was educated at St. Joseph's School in Troy, Troy High School and Siena College, class of 1955.
Mr. Markham was an insurance salesman for Liberty Mutual in Albany for 30 years, retiring 12 years ago.
He was a coach for Classie Lassie's in Wynantskill and was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park where he taught religious education many years ago.
Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Michele Markham Gallivan (Stephen) of Phoenixville, PA, Laurie Humphrey (Mark) of Lanesborough, MA and Christine Slomka (Thomas) of Grand Island, NY; a brother, John Markham (Peggy) of Sebring, FL; a sister, Marie Markham of Rensselaer; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey Aransky of Watervliet, John Markham of Wynantskill, Edward and Linda Markham of Watervliet, and Sam Kowala of Rensselaer. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 9:00am from the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 4392 Route 150 West Sand Lake, and at 9:30am from St. Henry's Church in Averill Park where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-8pm. Interment St. Henry's Cemetery in Averill Park.

Wayne F. Manville, 69
Troy - Wayne F. Manville, 69, of Hamilton Avenue, died Tuesday at Virtua West Jersey Hospital Marlton, NJ.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late E. Foster and Edna T. Lossoe Manville. He had resided the past 15 years in Marlton, New Jersey and was a graduate of Troy High School.
Mr. Manville spent much of his professional career in the equities market in New York City and the larger metropolitan area as a securities analyst retiring in November of 2002.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Troy - Gladys A. Engwer Manning, 87, formerly of Stow Avenue Troy, died Sunday at St. Peter's Hospital Albany, after a long illness.
Born in Troy, she was daughter of the late Daniel A. Engwer Sr. and Lillian Cooper Engwer and wife of the late David P. Manning Sr. She had resided in the Troy area all her life and was a graduate of Troy High School.
Mrs. Manning was a nurses aide at Hallmark Nursing Centre in Troy retiring in 1978.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in North Greenbush.
Survivors include two sons, David P. Manning Jr. (Gail) of Wynantskill and Darryl W. Manning of Troy; a daughter-in-law, Linda Manning of Troy; five sisters, Marie Sagendorf (Wayman) of West Sand Lake, Alethea Carroll of Palmetto, FL, Lillian Lapp ( Harold) of California, Dorothy McGann of Wynantskill, Jean Sandman (David) of Mount Airy, NC; a brother, Daniel A. Engwer Jr. of Averill Park; eight grandchildren, David P. Manning III, Michele E. Kronau, Marguerite A. McMillen, Joseph W. Manning, Dwight W. Manning Jr., Deborah A. Shoemaker, Kerri L. Sage and Erin M. Manning; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Dwight W. Manning Sr.

Dolores M. Horton Maloy, 72
Troy - Dolores M. Horton Maloy, 72, of Gurley Avenue, died peacefully Thursday at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Wynantskill, she was daughter of the late Hubert and Annette Delamater Horton and wife, for over 50 years, of Joseph Coleman Maloy Sr. She was born, raised and resided for 17 years in Wynantskill and the remainder of her life resided in Troy and was a graduate of Troy High School, class of 1949.
Mrs. Maloy was a waitress at Friendly's Restaurant in Troy for 25 years and many years ago worked as a bookkeeper for W. T. Grants in Troy.
She spent her life caring for her children and grandchildren.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Troy.
Survivors in addition to her husband include her children Joseph C. Maloy Jr. (Jo-Ann) of Delmar, Kim M. McInerney of Troy, Coleen Sadekoski (Rick) of Guilderland, Tom Maloy (Diana) of Wynantskill, Lisa A. Fredette (Art) of Altamont and Mark W. Maloy (Suzanne) of Troy; her grandchildren Jennifer, Erin, Amy, Elizabeth, Tommy, Lauren, Jenna, Mark, Liam and Cullen Maloy, Ryan Bartlett, Scott and Dylan Fredette and Tracy and Kevin Sadekoski; her great-grandchildren Isabella Grace and Kevis Grant and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson Joshua Bartlett and two sisters Loraine Milanese and Lois Brown; a brother William Horton and her father and mother-in-law Edward T. Maloy Sr. and Hattie Mae Maloy.

Marion Bulmer Mancino, 86
Troy - Marion Bulmer Mancino, 86, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Samaritan Hospital Troy after a long illness.
Born in Troy, she was daughter of the late William and Amelia Yaiser Bulmer and wife of the late Joseph A. Mancino. She had resided in the Troy area all her life and was educated at Troy schools.
Mrs. Mancino was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She worked as a salesperson for Stanley Home Products and as Concession Manager for various area theaters many years ago.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in North Greenbush and a former member of the Women's Guild of the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Kokernak (Thaddeus) of Troy and Linda Manning of Troy; a sister, Mildred Tucci (Carmen) of Troy; a son-in-law, Kenneth Bradt of Troy; five grandchildren, Barbara Divinsky (Ed) of Loudonville, Joseph Kokernak (Karyn) of Watervliet, Dwight Manning Jr.(Nicolle) of Troy, Dr. Anthony Bradt (Linda) of Bloomingberg and Patricia Bradt of Troy; six great grandchildren, David and Victoria Divinsky, Matthew and Schuyler Kokernak, Jenna Krystine Manning and Anthony Bradt Jr. and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Bradt; a son-in-law Dwight Manning Sr.; three sisters, Edna F. Kentzel, Amelia Burke and Catherine Doin and two brothers William T. and Joseph F. Bulmer.
