Marion T. Jackowski
Marion T. Jackowski, who had been cook and manager of the former Blue Top of Cutchogue, died May 31, 2003 at home in Riverhead. She was 88.
Known to her friends as "Mamie," she was born in Northville on March 24, 1915, and was married to Joseph Jackowski, who predeceased her in 2000. She enjoyed baking for family and friends and tending to her garden. A family statement recalled Ms. Jackowski's "loving and generous ways."
Ms. Jackowski is survived by a son, James, of St. Augustine, Fla.; a brother, Theodore Zamber of Riverhead; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Benedict.
Visitation was June 3 at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held June 4 at Riverhead's St. Isidore's R.C. Church, followed by interment at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, also in Riverhead.
Karl H. Stevens
Karl H. Stevens of Riverhead, who earned a Bronze Star for his service during World War II, died June 1, 2003 at his home. He was 89.
Mr. Stevens served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the war, crossing Europe with General George Patton's 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion, seeing action in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, central Europe and the Rhineland. Due to his fluency in German, his specialty was intelligence, and part of his duty was interrogating prisoners.
Mr. Stevens was born in Brooklyn on Sept. 29, 1913. Back in the States after the war, he worked as a postman in Queens before moving to Riverhead. Mr. Stevens was a past commander of Van Rensselaer Skidmore Post 2476 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Riverhead and a former secretary/treasurer of the Sound Park Heights Civic Association.
Predeceased by his wife, Adeline (Baber), last July, he is survived by his sister, Margaret Daly, of Kingston, N.Y., and a niece, Chary Lynn, of Florida.
Visiting hours will be held today, June 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be conducted at the home on Friday at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
Kenneth P. Forbes
Kenneth P. Forbes died at his home in Newburgh, Ind., on Oct. 13, 2003, his 60th birthday.
A Westhampton Beach native, Mr. Forbes joined the family newspaper business, The News-Review and Sunday Review of Riverhead where he was an advertising manager, after graduating from Upsala College in 1965. He later worked with advertising firms in Indiana and Georgia and, with his wife, Kay, owned a national executive search firm, Forbes and Company, in Newburgh.
Mr. Forbes was a member of the Evansville (Ind.) Ad Club, served on the Evansville Park Board and founded a support group for heart disease survivors, Mended Hearts.
He is survived by his wife; children Kelly Upson, Kristen Forbes-Moring and Kevin Forbes; a brother, Michael, of Quogue, two sisters, Jill Stubbs of Hughesville, Pa., and Casey Forbes of New Jersey; and four grandchildren.
Services took place in Evansville. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Lois Anne Mendala
Lois Anne Mendala of Riverhead, 75, died Oct. 8, 2003 at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead.
She was born in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., on Nov. 24, 1927, to Leonard and Leah Firth. Ms. Mendala was a 20-plus-year employee of the Internal Revenue Service in Riverhead.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Shinn of Northampton, and one granddaughter. She was predeceased by a son, Leonard.
Services were held Oct. 11 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, the Rev. Dr. Hea-young Park officiating. Interment followed at Riverhead Cemetery.
Rose Jackowski
Rose Jackowski of Riverhead died Oct. 13, 2003 at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead at age 83.
She was born in Riverhead on Sept. 4, 1920, to Thomas and Pauline (Grzemska) Jackowski. Ms. Jackowski worked as an assembler at Hazeltine in Riverhead. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Oct. 14 at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was conducted on Oct. 15 at St. Isidore's Church in Riverhead, with interment at St. John's Cemetery, Riverhead.
Eunice M. Nash
Eunice M. Nash of Riverhead died Oct. 9, 2003 at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead. She was 62.
The daughter of Isaiah and Mary Lou Nelson, she was born in Riverhead on Oct. 21, 1940. "Eunice especially found great joy in her family," said a family tribute.
She is survived by a son, Kevin, of Westhampton Beach; a brother, Jerry "Rocky" Nelson of Riverhead; her longtime companion, John Mitchell; and two granddaughters.
Visitation was Oct. 12 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. Services were held Oct. 13 at Goodwill AME Zion Church in Riverhead, the Revs. William Fields and Kenneth Nelson officiating. Interment followed at Riverhead Cemetery.
Helen Turchick
Helen Turchick, a Riverhead resident since 1955, died on Oct. 9, 2003 at Central Suffolk Hospital after a short illness. She was 82.
Born in Yonkers on Aug. 11, 1921, she was the daughter of Alexander and Pauline (Sivic) Karpenick. She was married to Harry Turchick Jr., who died in 1975.
A graduate of Commerce High School in Yonkers, her yearbook described her as "an all-around athlete who is truly liked because she is herself." She was an employee for many years of Riverhead Central School District and also worked as a title examiner at Riverhead County Center's records department. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 2476 in Riverhead.
Ms. Turchick is survived by a son, Gregory, a daughter, Larisa, and a grandson, Dustin Britt, all of Riverhead. A brother, Michael Karpenick of Yonkers, also survives her.
A memorial service for Ms. Turchick was held on Oct. 10 at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home, Riverhead. Burial was private.
