Margaret Sabalja
Longtime Southold resident Margaret Sabalja died on Dec. 4, 2006, at Saint Joseph's Guest Home in Huntington. She was 94.
Ms. Sabalja was born in Croatia in 1912. She came to New York in 1935 with her husband, Phillip, and two of her children. A Southold resident since 1972, she was later a part-time resident of St. Petersburg, Fla.
"Although she will be missed, she lived 94 wonderful, happy years," a family tribute read.
Ms. Sabalja is survived by her five children, Phillip, of Southold, Mary Kinsey of San Diego, Calif., Margie Kirincic of Franklin Square, Helen Breneisen of Manhasset and Ann Milcetich of Naples, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Last Remembrance was conducted at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Burial was at the church cemetery.
Francis Romano
Greenport resident Francis Romano, formerly of Cutchogue and College Point, Queens, died at his home on Jan. 7, 2007. He was 80.
He was born at Flushing Hospital on Jan. 22, 1926, to Frank and Lena (Ferry) Romano. He graduated from Flushing High School and served two years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1957, he married Dorothy Ohlrich.
For 38 years, Mr. Romano worked in the marketing department of the New York Central Railroad. He retired in 1986 and moved the following year to Cutchogue, where he and his wife built a home. The couple lived there until December 2006, when they relocated to Peconic Landing in Greenport.
While living on the North Fork, Mr. Romano was the president of the Southold Retirement Club, commander of the Southold American Legion and a director of Island's End Golf Club.
According to a statement written by Mr. Romano himself prior to his death, "He and his wife loved traveling, especially enjoying cruises. He also loved boating, fishing, crabbing and playing golf."
Mr. Romano is survived by his wife.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday, Jan. 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at William F. Coster Funeral Home in Cutchogue. An American Legion Service will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by a prayer service. Cremation on Jan. 12 will be private.

Arthur H. Stewart
Longtime Southold resident Arthur H. Stewart died at his home in Ridge on Oct. 29, 2004. He was 82 years old.
He was born May 31, 1922 in Floral Park, where he grew up and attended Sewanhaka High School. He later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware.
Mr. Stewart was a decorated veteran of the Korean War.
He was a direct descendent of famed Pilgrim, John Alden.
Retired from his executive position with AT&T, Mr. Stewart was a freelance correspondent for Times/Review's North Shore Sun, writing the Leisure Glen installments of the paper's "Leisure Living" column. He moved to Leisure Glen in Ridge about 15 years ago, according to his son, John.
"He was a caregiver his entire life," he said. "I first met him at the age of 7, two years after my natural father died. He stepped in and took care of my mother, adopting my younger brother and me. He took care of my natural father's mother in her declining years. The youngest of six, he took care of his own parents, too."
"He had a rare sense of humor, an extreme intelligence," his son said. "He really died as he would have wanted to, at home, in the middle of the night, without a lot of fuss."
He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Elizabeth, in 1993.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his three sons, John, of Peconic, Robert, of Newburyport, Mass. and Arthur, of Melbourne Beach, Fla. He also is survived by two grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place. A memorial service was held Nov. 3 at First Congregational Church of Riverhead, the Rev. Walfred Scofield officiating. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Joan A. Johnson
Joan A. Johnson, 73, died at her home in Southold on Nov. 5, 2004.
Born in Queens on July 8, 1931 to John and Lillian (Gobber) Barry, she grew up in Jackson Heights. She attended St. Joan of Arc Grammar School in Queens and Dominican Academy High School in Manhattan, graduating in 1949. She met West Point cadet Herbert Johnson on a blind date in 1949. They were married on Nov. 17, 1951 in Mr. Johnson's hometown of Portland, Ore. Following her marriage, she lived for several years on the West Coast, while her husband attended college and played professional football in the Canadian League. Ms. Johnson moved back to New York, when her husband signed with the New York Giants in 1954. They settled in Lynbrook in 1955 and lived there for many years, raising a family of seven.
Ms. Johnson served as office manager for her husband's defense contracting firm after the children were in school, Mr. Johnson said. She became a part-time resident of Southold in 1981, and moved here permanently 15 years ago.
Besides working with her husband in his real estate appraisal business, Ms. Johnson was active in the community, volunteering at Eastern Long Island Hospital and helping other seniors with meals and errands.
In addition to her husband, Ms. Johnson is survived by her sons, Michael, of Lynbrook, Kevin, of Bellmore, Brian, of Miami, Fla., and James, of Rockville Centre, and by her daughters, Lorinne Dowd, of Lynbrook, Stacy Spiegel, of Bellmore, and Joanne Krasnow, of Fairfield, Conn. She is also survived by her sisters, Eileen Hughes, of Southold, and Lillian Warren of Arizona; a brother, John Barry of Massachusetts; and 19 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Nov. 11 at St. Patrick's R.C. Church in Southold. Cremation was private under the direction of William F. Coster Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

John Douglas Reed
Mattituck resident John Douglas Reed, 58, died on Nov. 6, 2004, at Hospice Inn in Huntington.
Mr. Reed was born in Queens on May 28, 1946, to Louis and Rose Elaine (Walsh) Reed.
He attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1967 with a bachelor's degree.
Mr. Reed served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He resided in New York City and Southold before moving to Mattituck. He worked at Peconic Landing in Greenport for three years.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Reed is survived by two daughters, Margaret and Katherine, both of New Suffolk, and by a sister, Susan Carter of Merrick.
A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck on Nov. 19 at a time to be determined. Interment will be private at Calverton National Cemetery.

Dorothy P. Armbrust
Dorothy Armbrust, 96, died at the Cutchogue home of Ralph and Jane Armbrust on Nov. 8, 2004.
Viewing will be held at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at the funeral home.
Caroline R. Carroll
Caroline R. Carroll of Sound Beach died April 20, 2007 at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. She was 86 years old.
She was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Rockaway Beach. She grew up in Rockaway Beach, where she met her future husband, James Carroll, whose family summered there. They married on Sept. 28, 1946, in her home parish of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church in Rockaway Beach. Following their wedding, the couple settled in Astoria, where they lived for 36 years and raised their family.
She worked in a management position at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City for 15 years, retiring in 1985.
Ms. Carroll was very involved in her church in Astoria, Most Precious Blood R.C. Church, where she was a member of the Holy Rosary Altar Society.
She was predeceased by her husband in July 1996, just two months before their 50th wedding anniversary. She moved to Sound Beach in 1998, and lived with her oldest granddaughter, Barbara Dallon, and her family.
In her later years, her favorite hobby was spending time with her great-grandchildren, said her daughter Carolyn Hall of Wading River.
In addition to Ms. Hall, she is survived by her daughters Mary Jane (Candy) Mallin of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Barbara Jessen of Naples, Fla.; and a son, James, of Princeton Junction, N.J. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held April 22 and 23 at O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place. A funeral mass was celebrated on April 24 at St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery.
