U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Philip D. Moylan Sr.

Philip D. Moylan Sr. of Whiting, N.J., formerly of Jamesport, died at home on Dec. 3, 2004 at age 76.

Born in Brooklyn on Aug. 24, 1928, to William and Anna (Closs) Moylan, he lived in Mastic and Jamesport before moving to New Jersey in 1999.

Mr. Moylan was employed as a butcher by A&P in Riverhead for 23 years, until 1966, and later owned Katrinka Deli in Jamesport.

He was a member of the Mastic Volunteer Fire Company and the American Irish Club of Whiting.

Predeceased by his son John in 1990, Mr. Moylan is survived by his wife, Joan (née Fraser); sons Philip, of Towson, Md., Paul, of Henderson, Tenn., Tom, of Toledo, Ohio, and Jim, of Havertown, Pa.; a daughter, Kathy Stanley of Westchester, Pa.; a brother, William, and sister, Sue May, both of Mastic; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial mass was offered on Dec. 6 in Whiting. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 216 Haddon Ave., Suite 328, Westmont, NJ 08108.

Josephine M. Lee

Josephine M. Lee of Manorville, formerly of East Patchogue, died on Dec. 9, 2004 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She was 87.

Born in Whitestone, Queens, on Dec. 25, 1916, to Herman and Frieda (Muller) Schoeller, Ms. Lee was a homemaker who frequently visited the North Fork.

Predeceased by her husband, Herbert, in 1987, Ms. Lee is survived by her children, Joanne Ponzio of Mattituck, James, of Yaphank, Thomas, of West Sayville, and Charles and Ronald, both of California; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation was on Dec. 10 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Religious services were held there on Dec. 11, officiated by the Rev. Charles Byer of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Aquebogue. Interment was at Washington Memorial Park, Coram.

Adeline E. Mills

Adeline E. Mills (née Donley), of Riverhead, formerly of Levittown and Southold, died on Dec. 3, 2004, at Central Suffolk Hospital at the age of 84.

She was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Queens to Harold and Adeline (Schneeberger) Donley. Before her retirement to the North Fork, Mrs. Mills was secretary to the assistant superintendent of the Plainedge School District. After moving to Southold, she and her husband enjoyed boating and fishing in their bayfront community. Mrs. Mills was a member of Southold Homemakers for many years.

"She always had such a beautiful smile," said her daughter, Kathleen Bennett of Jamesport, "and she was so appreciative of anything anyone did for her. She loved doing all kinds of crafts, especially ceramics, and did exquisite work."

Mrs. Mills is survived by William, her beloved husband of 61 years, and her loving daughter Kathleen (Robert). She was a devoted grandmother of Kirsten Bennett-O'Rourke (Sean) and Sean T. Bennett (Christine).

Family received friends at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home, Riverhead, on Dec. 5 and 6. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Dec. 7 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Msgr. John Bennett and the Rev. Peter Allen officiating. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Jack J. O'Neal

Jack J. O'Neal of Roosevelt, formerly of Riverhead, died at home on Dec. 3, 2004. He was 82.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Nov. 28, 1922, to Ernest and Ethel (Dotson) O'Neal, he graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga in 1941.

Mr. O'Neal held the rank of signalman second class in the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II, serving aboard the USS Gulfport in Europe and the U.S. In 1948 he married Margaret Solomon in Catoosa County, Ga. He was employed as an electrician with International Local 25 Electrical Workers Union, retiring in 1988.

According to a family statement, Mr. O'Neal loved to travel and visit with family and friends and was known as "just a great guy."

He is survived by his wife; children Ernest, Michael and Patrick, of Roosevelt, Ronald, of Riverhead, Robert and David, of Shirley, and Mary Mateiko of East Moriches; siblings Clifford O'Neal of Palmetto, Fla., Ruth Byrum of Chattanooga and Gladys Ivanowski of Old Town, Fla.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was on Dec. 15 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, Riverhead. Graveside services and interment were held on Dec. 6 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Cathleen E. Mackie

Cathleen E. Mackie of Riverhead, 81, died on Dec. 7, 2004 at Central Suffolk Hospital.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1923, in Woodhaven, Queens, to Harold and Margaret Meehan. A statement from relatives said she was dedicated to her family.

Predeceased by her husband, Felix, in March, Ms. Mackie is survived by her son, Frank, of Riverhead, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was Dec. 8 and 9 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home, Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Dec. 10 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, the Rev. Thomas Coby officiating. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery, alongside her husband.

Betty Bimstein

Betty Bimstein, 95, of Cheshire, Conn., formerly of Riverhead, died Nov. 19, 2004.

Born Dec. 5, 1908, in East Orange, N.J., to Abram and Rosie (Friedman) Dresin, Ms. Bimstein's most recent work was as a volunteer foster grandmother in a Riverhead elementary school, according to her step-granddaughter, Amy Foster.

"She loved children and she loved the beach," Ms. Foster said. "She was very independent, and lived on her own until she was 92. She had no children of her own, but she maintained close contact with her stepson and his children and grandchildren, even though most of them lived in California.

"She babysat many children over the years and loved her work in the school," Ms. Foster added.

Ms. Bimstein is survived by her stepson, Morton Stone, three step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 20 at O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place.
