Anna Mascolo Gannon
Anna Mascolo Gannon M.D., a resident of Shelter Island for the past 30 years, died on February 11, 2003 after a prolonged struggle with progressive supranuclear palsy, a degenerative neurological disease.
Born in Astoria, Queens, Dr. Gannon was the older of two daughters of immigrant Italian-American parents and learned English when she began school. A graduate of Brooklyn College and Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, she received post-graduate training in internal medicine with a subspecialty in cardiology at Long Island College Hospital Brooklyn. She was certified in internal medicine.
Dr. Gannon was always concerned about providing medical care for the urban poor, migrants and the medically indigent.
Positions that she held include vice president of Long Island College and medical director of the ILGWU. Her affiliations included Downstate, Columbia and Mt. Sinai medical schools.
Surviving are her husband, Frederic L. Gannon M.D.; her sister Vivian Mahon of Tampa, Florida; her four children, Anna Gannon, Lisa Gannon, Andrea Gannon Brereton and Ted Gannon; and seven grandchildren.
A mass of resurrection was offered on February 13, 2003 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City. Interment at Our Lady of the Isle Cemetery was officiated by the Reverend Charles Dougherty, C.P., attended by family, friends and the early morning group from Stars coffee cellar. The family asks that donations be sent to the fund for the needy at Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Church, Box 3027, Shelter Island Heights, New York 11965.
Claude J. Frechette
Claude J. Frechette, M.D. died of a heart attack at his home on Shelter Island on February 17, 2003. He was 64.
Calling hours at Saint Mary's Church will be on Thursday, February 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A burial service will be conducted at the church at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 21.
A gift in Dr. Frechette's memory may be made to any Shelter Island charity, in lieu of flowers.
Michael A. Kornrumpf
Michael A. Kornrumpf died at age 92 on February 6, 2001 at San Simeon by the Sound Nursing Home in Greenport after a series of strokes over the past five years.
A graduate of Brooklyn Tech and Pace College, where he studied accounting, he joined New York Life in 1926, became a senior underwriter and remained with the company until he retired in 1973.
Born in Greenpoint, he grew up there and in Woodhaven and spent many summers at Breezy Point. He and his wife, Lillian, moved to Hempstead in 1937 and to Southold in 1996.
Mr. Kornrumpf loved the water. He was a lifeguard at Breezy Point and swam across Jamaica Bay a number of times. He also loved Jones Beach and Peconic Bay. He was a keen woodworker who made furniture and dollhouses for his grandchildren.
For many years, he was very active with Christ's First Presbyterian Church in Hempstead as an elder, deacon and trustee. Mr. Kornrumpf was also active as a Scout leader when his children were young.
Besides his wife of 64 years, Lillian, he is survived by a son, Donald Kornrumpf and his wife, Ellen, of Shelter Island, and daughter Lois (Kornrumpf) Codispoti and her husband, James of Rye, New York; grandchildren Anne (Kornrumpf) Samowitz, David, Jill and Michael J. Kornrumpf and Timothy and Thomas Codispoti and Lisa (Codispoti) DePauw and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Southold at 2 p.m. on February 17, followed by burial after cremation.
In lieu of flowers, the family have asked that donations be made to San Simeon by the Sound Nursing Home, P.O. Box 2122, Greenport, New York, 11944.
Frederick William Farrow
Frederick William Farrow, who had been a resident of Shelter Island for 70 years and was the retired owner of the West Side Garage and a marina on the Island, died on January 28, 2001 at Hot Springs Village in Arkansas.
Predeceased by his first wife of 61 years, Viola Sherman Farrow, he leaves his wife, Beulah Pippen Farrow of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; his step-son, Walter Pippen of Hot Springs Village; his sisters, Pearl Garvey of New Jersey and Mae Scott of Delaware and many nieces and nephews.
While a resident of the Island, he was a member and chief of the Shelter Island Volunteer Fire Department, a member and officer of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a member of the Shelter Island Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Father Steve Crowson will officiate. Interment will follow at the Shelter Island Cemetery. Services are entrusted to the DeFriest's Shelter Island Funeral Home.
Jane G. S. Wiseman
Jane Genry Shelton Wiseman, 67, a former resident of Shelter Island and co-owner of The Dory for the last 30 years, died in San Francisco on January 28, 2001 of cancer.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she attended The Master's School in Dobb's Ferry, New York and Smith College. She pursued a career as a stockbroker, entrepreneur and restaurateur in New York City, Shelter Island and San Francisco.
She is survived by her three loving children, Sayre and John, of Los Angeles, and Shelley, of New York, and a grandson, Liam.

Steven Dzupa
Steven Dzupa of Shelter Island died Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Eastern Long Island Hospital after a long illness. He was 86.
Mr. Dzupa was born August 10, 1916 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the son of Charles Dzupa and Rosie Hospodar. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe as a medical technician. He was employed in the accounting department of Citibank in New York City.
He retired to Shelter Island and was one of the first volunteers in the Senior Nutrition Program in the 1980s.
Mr. Dzupa is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (nÉe) Bodnar and a brother, Karol, of Slovakia, Europe, and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold on Wednesday, February 12 by Father Ihor Tarasiw of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church of Riverhead. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
Norman L. Sanwald Sr.
Norman L. Sanwald Sr., a life-long resident of Shelter Island, passed away on February 8, 2003 at University Hospital in Stony Brook. He was 75.
Mr. Sanwald was born in East Marion on September 27, 1927 to John William and Marguerite (Vail) Sanwald. They moved to Shelter Island when he was nine months old. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Shelter Island and married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Davis.
Mr. Sanwald was a member of the Shelter Island Heights Fire Department and the American Legion.
He held a variety of positions during his lifetime, including constable with the Shelter Island Police Department and caretaker and gamekeeper at the former Mashomack Fish and Game Club. He also ran his own painting business.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and many other outdoor activities and had a number of hobbies and interests, including coin collecting, woodworking and antique glass collecting. He was an avid reader. He was particularly interested in the natural and cultural history of Shelter Island and maintained a collection of Native American artifacts.
Mr. Sanwald is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosemary, and their five children: Susan Laspia, Kathleen Conrad, Norman Sanwald Jr., Barbara Smith and Amy Mutchnick; 12 grandchildren: Erica Laspia, Novella Yeaman, Jamie Laspia, Kate Topliff, Kacee Conrad, Raymond and Kevin Sanwald, Jed and Alex Smith and Mason, India and Levy Mutchnick; and two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Isabelle Topliff. He is also survived by his sister, Marge Card of Shelter Island, and brother, Robert Sanwald of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by a brother, William, who died serving in Italy during World War II.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 11 at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church with Reverend Bill Grimbol officiating.
Contributions in Mr. Sanwald's memory may be made to the Shelter Island Red Cross ambulance corps, the Shelter Island Fire Department or Mashomack Preserve.
Alice D. Giles
Alice D. Giles, a former Shelter Island resident, passed away at her home in Port Washington on January 26, 2001. She was 96.
Mrs. Giles was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter, and survived by two loving children, Edward Giles and Barbara Jenkins; six loving grandchildren: Walter, Carolyn, Stephen, Suzi, Chip and Jeanne; and four loving great grandchildren: Robin, Elizabeth, Kristin and Sarah.
Alice Giles was born October 19, 1904 and was raised in North Collins, New York by her beloved aunt, Mary Knopf. She married Walter Giles on June 16, 1934.
They moved to Port Washington in 1944 and lived for many years there and in Manhasset before moving to Shelter Island upon his retirement from New York Telephone in 1967.
Walter passed away in 1975. Alice continued to live at her Shelter Island home on the water until 1997, driving frequently to and from Manhasset until 1994 to visit her family.
A family service was conducted at the Congregational Church on Manhasset on January 28 and a burial service on Shelter Island on January 29. Memorial donations may be made to the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church.
Gertrude E. Hunziker
Gertrude E. Hunziker died in Hollywood, Florida on January 30, 2002. She was 99 years old. She and her husband, Ted, were long-time summer residents of Shelter Island. They bought their property in Silver Beach in 1946. Mrs. Hunziker lived in Florida until her death.
She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Gray of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Jane Treggett of Marlborough, Connecticut; a son, Charles (Chuck) of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia; and three grandsons, Michael Treggett, Gordon (Chip) Cantley of Winter Park, Florida and Bruce Cantley of Boston, Massachusetts. Her great-grandchildren are Zachary and Mollie Cantley of Winter Park.
Mrs. Hunziker will be buried at a private ceremony in Florida.
Irwin W. Hally
Irwin W. Hally of Shelter Island died on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Eastern Long Island Hospital of congestive heart failure, following a brief illness. He was 99.
Mr. Hally had spent summers on the Island for 34 years and then located here full-time in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the Shelter Island Yacht Club. He was also a past pastor of the Larchmont Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Hally was born on September 7, 1903 to Andrew and Louise Hally of the Bronx. He graduated from New Rochelle High School and the Clam Diggers Institute and in 1934 married Elizabeth (Libby) Loges Dinkel in Montclair, New Jersey. They had two children, Carl and Pat.
For 35 years Mr. Hally worked in sales for the Celotex Corporation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, retiring as its regional sales manager.
Mr. Hally was predeceased by his wife, Libby, and brother, Edmond, of Princeton, New Jersey.
He is survived by his two children, Carl Hally of Charleston, South Carolina and Pat Mohlere of Shelter Island; five grandchildren, Brooke Perkins, Kate MacPherson, Lisabeth Mohlere, Gretchen Brown and Lee Mohlere; his sister, Louise Durbin of Stamford, Connecticut; his sister-in-law Gertrude Dinkel of Shelter Island; and his nephews and niece, Fred Dinkel, Peter Dinkel and Debbie Dinkel -- all of Shelter Island.
A graveside service was held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. The Reverend Timothy Lewis of St. Ann's in Bridgehampton officiated.
Donations in Mr. Hally's memory may be made to Union Chapel in the Grove or the ambulance corps of the Shelter Island Chapter of the American Red Cross.
William C. Congdon
William C. Congdon died at Eastern Long Island Hospital on Saturday, January 18, 2003. He was 101 years old.
Mr. Congdon was born on Shelter Island on November 29, 1901 to Wesley and Charlotte (Fisher) Congdon.
For 57 years, he filled many positions at the Shelter Island Country Club -- from 1920 to 1977 -- where he enjoyed his many friends and members.
Mr. Congdon is survived by the family that he loved so much -- his wife of 76 years, Olive; daughter, Charlotte Hannabury; son-in-law, Town Justice Edward J. Hannabury; grandson, William C. Hannabury, an officer in the Shelter Island Police Department, and his wife, Casey; great-grandsons Caleb and Shane Hannabury and their mother, Jeanie Whiting; his niece, Gail H. Thompson; and nephews, Wesley Hohenshelt, Ray Congdon III and R. Wesley Congdon IV.
Mr. Congdon was predeceased by his granddaughter, Cheryl Hannabury; his brothers Ray, Ralph and George; and his sister, Grace Hohenshelt.
Visitation was held at the Shelter Island Funeral Home on January 20, with burial on January 21 in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
