Ruth Scudi
Ruth Scudi died on September 23 [2000] at 91 years of age.
Born on September 10, 1910, Mrs. Scudi was the widow of Michael Anthony Scudi and mother of the late Gail Chadwick.
Ruth Scudi is survived by her daughter, Jane Scudi-Dell, and her son-in-law Bob Dell of Westhampton Beach. She is also survived by her grandson Michael Chadwick.
A private funeral service was held at the Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach.
Vernon D. Hawkins
Vernon D. Hawkins (Bud) died at home in East Moriches on Wednesday, March 28 [2001]. He was 84 years old.
Born on November 14, 1916 in Eastport, he moved to East Moriches in 1946. He worked as an A&P aircraft mechanic at Mabry’s Flying School, formerly located in Westhampton near the Coca-Cola plant. A jig builder for various fighter aircraft at Republic Aviation in Farmingdale and Grumman Aircraft in Calverton, Mr. Hawkins also served as a stationary engineer at the Suffolk County power plant in Riverhead. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Hawkins wrote many articles about the local area that appeared in The Southampton Press and had lifelong interests in aviation, nature, astronomy, birds, carving, and environmental issues.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Satterly Hawkins; a sister, Dorothy H. Dugan of East Moriches, three sons, Leigh D. Hawkins of Mastic, Brian S. Hawkins of East Moriches, and Jon W. Hawkins of Aquebogue; a daughter, Zoe (Wendy) Rice of Connecticut; and eight grandchildren, Catherine and Alan Hawkins, Elizabeth Hawkins, Rebecca Hawkins Camerer, Mark Hawkins, and Kenneth, Charles and Eric Rice.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church of East Moriches on Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m.
Elsa M. Plainver
Elsa M. Plainver of Quogue died on April 5 [2001] at Westhampton Care Center in Westhampton. She was 92.
Born in Brooklyn to Mathilde and Maurice Plainver, Ms. Plainver had resided in this area since her childhood and was a member of the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.
She was predeceased by her brother, George.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the memorial fund of the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.
William L. Salivar
William L. Salivar of Hampton Bays died on April 4 [2001] at the Riverhead Nursing Home. He was 85.
Born on September 3, 1915, in New York City to Louis and Elizabeth Salivar, he was raised on the Upper East Side and graduated from Stuyvesant High School with honors. In 1936, he joined the firm of Sperry Gyroscope as a process engineer at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He transferred to the firm’s main facility in Lake Success where he worked for many years before transferring to Lake Ronkonkoma for 15 years. He retired in 1979. Mr. Salivar’s career spanned many projects but he worked primarily with naval guidance systems.
After he moved to Hampton Bays in 1947, Mr. Salivar became a member of the Hampton Bays Lions Club, the Holy Name Society of St. Rosalie’s, the Southampton Golf Club, and the Riverhead Moose Lodge.
He was an active member of the Hampton Bays Fire Department for more than 40 years, serving as a lieutenant on the Seagrave in 1960, the first president of the Hampton Bays Fire Department Benevolent Association from 1961 to 1962, president of the Hampton Bays Fire Company from 1970 to 1971, ex-captain in the Hampton Bays Fire Company, and district treasurer from 1980 to 1997. He concluded his service with the Fire Department as a Life Member. He also served on the Hampton Bays School Board in the 1960s and on the Southampton Town Grievance Board.
Mr. Salivar is survived by two daughters, Sharon Jankowski and her husband Ted of Hampton Bays, and Debbie Salivar Leimgruber and her husband Rolf of Georgia; a son-in-law, Albert Bennett of Southampton; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Bennett of Florida; and a grandson, T.J. Jankowski and his wife Kristin of Massachusetts; a sister, Louise Sarisky; and two brothers, Edward and Louis, all of Hampton Bays. Mr. Salivar’s wife of 49 years, Agnes, and his oldest daughter, Elizabeth Bennett, predeceased him.
A Christian wake service and firematic services were held on Friday, April 6, at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, April 7, with members of the Hampton Bays Fire Department in attendance at St. Rosalie’s Catholic Church. Interment was in Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
John Julian
John Julian of Hampton Bays died at his home on April 8 [2001]. He was 73.
After enlisting in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, he served in Korea for one and a half years and was awarded several medals for his service. After retiring as a Court Officer for the New York State Supreme Court Office in Riverhead, he worked as a security guard at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton for 10 years.
Predeceased by his first wife, Florence Julian, to whom he was married for 43 years, Mr. Julian is survived by his present wife, Adrienne Gula Julian; a daughter, Barbara Squires and her husband Thomas of Hampton Bays; a son, John Julian of Hampton Bays; two grandsons, Christopher Thomas Squires and John Julian Squires; and a brother, Leo, of Texas.
A prayer service was held at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays on Monday, April 9. Cremation at Washington Memorial Park in Coram on Tuesday was private; Mr. Julian’s ashes will be interred in Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays today, Thursday, April 12, at 3 p.m.

Paul T. Paraskevas
Paul Theodore Paraskevas of Southampton and Roselle Park, New Jersey, died on Monday, March 19 [2001]. He was 76.
Mr. Paraskevas was born on June 22, 1924, and was educated at Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, New Jersey. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Paraskevas served aboard the USS Hornet. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering and Newark College of Engineering in 1954 with a Master’s Degree in mechanical engineering.
A professional engineer, licensed in the state of New Jersey, he worked for most of his life for Exxon in marine sales, and traveled extensively for the company. A member of the Southampton Golf Club, Mr. Paraskevas spent the last 20 years of his life between his homes in Roselle Park and Southampton.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Paraskevas, children’s book author, television producer and creator of “Maggie and the Ferocious Beast” for Nickelodeon and “Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse” for PBS; a son, Michael, illustrator of all his mother’s books and also a television producer and co-creator of “Maggie and the Ferocious Beast” and “Marvin the Tap dancing Horse”; and a daughter, Judith (Michael’s twin) who works in government and with her mother and brother on production.
Mr. Paraskevas is also survived by three brothers, Angelo, George and John; and two sisters, Marianne and Helena.
Ronald L. Lowe
Ronald L. Lowe of North Haven died on Wednesday, April 4 [2001], at University Hospital at Stony Brook. He was 70.
Mr. Lowe was born in Cape Sable, Nova Scotia, on August 20, 1930, to Russell and Ethrilla (Nickerson) Lowe. After graduating from Pierson High School, he attended the State University at Farmingdale and the University of Connecticut. Mr. Lowe served in the Marines during the Korean War.
He was a partner in Arthur Andersen & Company in the firm’s New York City office, and was the secretary treasurer of the Sag Harbor Yacht Club, and a member of the American Legion and the John Jermain Library Board. In addition, he served on committees in North Haven Village government and on the board of directors of the Cormaria Retreat House in Sag Harbor.
Mr. Lowe is survived by his wife, Barbara (Byrnes) Lowe; three children, Diane Lowe Comerford and her husband Pete of Rhode Island, James R. Lowe and his wife Christine of Somers, New York, and Caryn B. Lowe of California; two brothers, Gerald Lowe of Nova Scotia and Robert Lowe of Florida; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Jennifer Lowe. He was predeceased by a sister, Rhoda Lowe.
The family received friends at a prayer service at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor on Friday. A mass was held on Saturday at St. Andrew's Church in Sag Harbor, with interment following in St. Andrews Cemetery.

Helene G. Hoge
Helene Gales Hoge, a longtime summer resident of Whitefields in Southampton, died on Saturday, April 7 [2001].
Mrs. Hoge was born and raised in Locust Valley. The daughter of George and Helene Gales, she was the twin sister of Seaton Gales. Married to Francis H. Hoge, she is survived by two daughters, Judith Shafer Lockwood and Wendy Hoge; two sons, the Reverend Michael Shafer and Christopher Hoge; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Hoge and Barbara Obolensky; three grandchildren, Reuben Shafer, Gail Shafer and Alexandra Hoge; and a great-grandson, Evan Shafer.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m., at the Brick Presbyterian Church at 91st Street and Park Avenue in New York.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cabrini Medical Center Hospice or the Visiting Nurse Association.
Renee M. Gauger
Renee M. Gauger of Sag Harbor died on Wednesday, April 4 [2001], at the age of 37.
Mrs. Gauger is survived by her parents, Joseph and Hermine Grippo; her husband, Christopher Gauger; her child, Jessie; and a sister, Jeannette Jones.
A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Andrew's Church in Sag Harbor on Monday, with interment following at St. Andrews Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Papavero Funeral Home in Maspeth.
