Stella M. Szklany
Former Riverhead resident Stella M. Szklany of Pawleys Island, S.C., died at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C., on Aug. 18, 2002. She was 86.
Ms. Szklany was born in Holyoke, Mass., on Aug. 21, 1915, to Joseph and Anna (Niedziela) Szczepanik, and moved to Long Island in 1927. She lived in Riverhead for over 25 years before moving to South Carolina two years ago. She was a homemaker whose husband, Anthony, predeceased her in 1997.
She is survived by three children, Katherine Bishop of Sanford, N.C., Anthony, of New Fairfield, Conn., and Robert, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Vera Remick of Wading River; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation was yesterday at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead, and funeral services are today, Aug. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore's R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial will follow at St. Isidore's Cemetery, Riverhead.
John A. Young
John A. Young of Holbrook, formerly of Jamesport and Riverhead, died at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue on Aug. 16, 2002. He was 70.
Mr. Young was born in Jamesport to John and Louise (Tuthill) Young on May 30, 1932. He was a veteran of the Korean War and later became an aviation fuels technician for the Air National Guard in Westhampton. He enjoyed drawing and model trains, according to family members.
He is survived by one daughter, Dianna Lopez of Edwardsville, Pa.; a brother, Halsey Young of Eastport; and one grandchild.
Cremation was private under the direction of Robertaccio Funeral Home in Patchogue. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Matthew E. Sobering
Matthew E. Sobering, 36, of Riverhead died at home of cancer on Aug. 15, 2002. He was a chef at the Elbow Room in Jamesport.
He was born on March 12, 1966, in Glen Cove to Guy and Penelope (Rockson) Sobering. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two children, Thomas Jackowski Jr. of Virginia and Deborah DiScioscia of Riverhead; three brothers, Nicholas, Stephen and Andrew, all of Florida; and a granddaughter.
Services were held Monday at First Congregational Church in Riverhead. Arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home of Riverhead.
Memorial donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York City.
Jennie D. Minardi
Longtime Mattituck resident Jennie D. Minardi died Sept. 27, 2002 at Westhampton Care Center at the age of 87.
She was born in Warren, R.I,, on Jan. 20, 1915, to Vincent and Veronica (Maciorowski) Karpinski. The family moved to Orient in 1927 and to Aquebogue around 1930. After marrying Milton Jackowski, she moved to Mattituck in 1935. After Mr. Jackowski's death in 1951, she married Joseph Minardi in 1968. He died in 1972. Ms. Minardi worked as a meat packer at Hills Supermarkets in Riverhead and Cutchogue.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Jackowski, and a son, Milton, both of Mattituck; two brothers, Joseph Karpinski of Riverhead and Felix Karpinski of Eustis, Fla.; and two sisters, Helen Jarvis of Babylon and Frances McKenney of Bay Shore.
Visitation was Oct. 1 at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral mass followed at St. Isidore's R.C. Church in Riverhead, with interment at St. John's Cemetery.
Louis H. Andruski
Louis H. Andruski of Aquebogue died Oct. 1, 2002 at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead at the age of 55.
He was born in Greenport on Nov. 27, 1946, to Louis and Victoria (Volpink) Andruski Sr., and worked as a gardener.
Mr. Andruski is survived by his mother and a sister, Patricia Flynn of Mamaroneck, N.Y.
A funeral mass was offered at St. Isidore's R.C. Church in Riverhead on Oct. 3, followed by interment at the church cemetery.
Wilfred T. Sullivan Sr.
Wilfred T. Sullivan Sr., 68, of Riverhead died at Central Suffolk Hospital there on Sept. 25, 2002.
Born in Riverhead on March 30, 1934, he was the son of Wilfred and Elizabeth Sullivan. He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1953 and was a retired laborer with Local 66.
Mr. Sullivan was a member of the Riverhead American Legion Post and the Marine Corps League, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He was a longtime member of the Riverhead Elks Lodge, a former member of Riverhead Fire Department's Washington Engine Co., and served as president of the RFD Exempts.
He is survived by his wife, Emilia; six sons, Allan, of Sumner, Wash., Thomas John, of Phoenix, Ariz., Wilfred Jr., of Westhampton, Lawrence, of Key West, Fla., Thomas James, of Purcellville, Va., and Gregory, of Speonk; a daughter, Diane Mullen of Westhampton; a brother James, of Hawaii; two sisters, Eileen, of Florida, and Cathy, of Canton, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond.
Visitation was Sept. 29 at F.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home, Riverhead. A funeral service was conducted on Sept. 30 at St. John's Church, Riverhead. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Riverhead American Legion Post, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Elizabeth Ferris
Elizabeth Ferris of Riverhead died at Riverhead Nursing Home on Sept. 30, 2002 at the age of 101.
She was born in Brooklyn on July 27, 1901, to James and Mary (Marra) Sullivan. She had been a knitter of children's clothing in Ridgewood, Queens, and a resident of that community. Ms. Ferris later moved to Florida and lived there for 25 years before moving to Cutchogue to be with her daughter, Jean Block. Four years ago she moved to Riverhead.
Predeceased by her husband, Theodore, in 1966, she is survived by her daughter; a son, Edward, of Quogue; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Sinnott.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10:15 a.m. at S.S. Cyril & Methodius R.C. Church on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Pinelawn, with arrangements by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home, Mattituck.
