Irene Cross of Grahamsville, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Thursday, February 14, 2002, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Christopher and Pearl Ackerley Backman, she was born January 19, 1915, in Grahamsville. She was the widow of Gerald Cross who died in 1987.
Mrs. Cross was a member of the Lows Corners Baptist Church.
She is survived by several neighbors and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Cross, who died in 1999.
Graveside services and burial were held on Saturday, February 23, at the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery in Grahamsville with the Rev. Paul Ruter officiating.

Henry Gorniak, 92

Henry Gorniak of Grahamsville, a 45-year area resident and retired employee of the Rockland State Hospital in Orangeburg, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. He was 92 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph and Frances Kasfarzak Gorniak, he was born January 13, 1910, in Scranton, Pa. He was the widower of Ora Tooley Gorniak.
Mr. Gorniak was a pigeon fancier and exhibited show dogs.
He is survived by a daughter, Frances Getchell and a grandson, Robert, and his wife, Dee Getchell, all of Hawthorne, N.J.; great-grandchildren, Allison and Lauren Getchell; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday at the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Ellenville.
Burial was made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery in Grahamsville.
Milton J. Labar
Ret. Sawyer, 86
Milton Joseph Labar of Waymart, Pa., a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 86 years of age.
The son of the late Milton Eugene and Anna Looss Labar, he was born February 22, 1915, in Frankford Township, New Jersey.
Mr. Labar had been employed as a sawyer at the Labar Lumber Mill in Lookout, Pa., and worked at Chromatube in White Mills, Pa., for ten years prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie Campbell Labar with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage on January 13; six sons and daughters-in-law, Milton H. and Jean Labar of Chicago, Ill., Eugene and Doris Labar of Wyalusing, Pa., Louis and Jane Labar of Salt Lake City, Utah, James and Donna Labar of Waymart, Pa., David and Cindy Labar of Mountain Home, Idaho, and George and Lisa Labar of Pleasant Mount, Pa.; four daughters, Alice Scott and her husband, Russell, of Abrahamsville, Pa., Jenett Harrington of Honesdale, Pa., Mary Labar of Kingstown, R. I., and Ann Russek and her husband, Karl, of Banto, Pa.; a brother, Raymond Labar of Lookout, Pa.; two sisters, Viola Labar of Waymart, Pa., and Rita Halodinski of Warwick; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Louis Labar, and a sister, Ruth Hadden.
Services were held Monday at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Waymart, Pa., officiated by the Rev. Martin Cox, pastor of the Hawley United Methodist Church.
Interment was made in the East Canaan Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
Sharon R. Peterson
Homemaker, 58
Sharon R. Peterson of Mountaindale, a 30-year area resident and a homemaker, died Friday, February 22, 2002, at the Ellenville Community Hospital, after a long illness. She was 58 years of age.
The daughter of the late Richard and Mildred Speardred Todd, she was born June 4, 1943, in Englewood, N.J. She was the widow of Rennes C. Peterson who died in 1995.
She attended St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello.
Mrs. Peterson is survived by a son, Rennes T. Peterson of Mountaindale; five daughters, Tammy Grimm and her husband, Andrew, of Woodbourne, Tracey Peterson of Carmel, Lisa Langeland and her husband, Arne, of Woodbourne, Paula Burke and her husband, Edward, of Liberty and Robbin Peterson of Hurleyville; two sisters, Vilma Metleff of Staten Island and Valerie Babock and her husband, Floyd of Park Ridge, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three grandchildren, Samantha, William and Amanda Peterson.
Services were held Monday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.

Fella May of Kiamesha Lake, the retired owner and operator of Fay's Fashion in New York City and a short time resident of the area, died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Judah and Genendel Kantor Brykman, she was born February 15, 1924, in Poland. She was the widow of Samuel May who died in 1985.
Mrs. May is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Howard Garchik of Rock Hill and Judy and Wayne Hellman of Kiamesha Lake; five grandchildren, Adam Garchik and his wife, Rebecca, Scott and Eric Garchik and Ashley and Samuel Hellman.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 186 Broadway, Monticello, with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating.
Burial will be made in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, Queens.
Shiva will be observed at the Garchik home in Rock Hill from Thursday, February 28, to Wednesday, March 6.

Malcolm Ashley Mann Sr. of Pomona, a retired baker for Hartz Mountain in Ramsey, N.J., died Saturday, February 23, 2002. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Lenard and Minnie DeGroat Mann, he was born December 15, 1931, in Mahwah, N.J.
Mr. Mann is survived by his wife, Clara Mann, of Pomona; two sons, Malcolm Mann Jr. of Bloomingburg and Donald Conklin of Fort Plains; five daughters, Terry Mann and Darlene Vanblarcom, both of Maybrook, Alisha Jennings of Spring Glen, Corinna Conklin of Middletown and Melissa Cuomo of Monroe; a brother, Gordon Mann; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Clarice Mann and Victoria Mann; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Scarr Funeral Home, Route 202, Suffern.

Jacoba Johanna Van Malden Young of Beaufort, S.C., a homemaker, died Saturday, February 23, 2002, at her home. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Johannas and Jacoba Knap Van Malden, she was born August 10, 1923, in Passaic, N.J.
She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Jacoba and Floyd Campfield of Hollywood, Fla., and Narrowsburg, Mary and Scott Campbell of Sperryville, Va., Frances and Keith Krause of Columbia Crossroads, Pa., CDR Kathleen Joan Young, serving in the U.S. Navy, of Beaufort, S. C., and Patricia and Thomas Cooke of Seabrook, S.C.; two sons, Bernard Young of Cochecton, and Frank Young and his wife, Debbie, of Ocean Springs, Miss; a sister, Betty Brumby of Muttonhead, L.I.; a brother, Nicholas Van Malden of Freehold, N.J.; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services and burial were held later in the Riverview Cemetery in Hancock.

Viola C. Greener of Florida, N.Y., a retired home health aide and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, February 23, 2002, at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. She was 78 years of age.
The daugher of the late George and Bessie Carr Manto, she was born January 3, 1924, in Warwick. She was the widow of Peter Martin Greener.
Mrs. Greener was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Florida, N.Y.
She is survived by a son, Peter George Greener of Florida, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Slocum of Napanoch, Faith Susan Conklin of Port Jervis and Yvonne Sicina of Grahamsville; five grandchildren, Todd Slocum, Kimberly Conklin, Melanie Bacilieri, and Jeffery and Katie Sicina; two great-grandchildren, Todd Slocum Jr. and Jessica Slocum; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church in the village of Florida with the Rev. Joseph Tokarczyk officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Florida, N.Y.

Barbara J. Pavlik of Newburgh, a retired office manager for Drs. Shapiro and Latonero, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late Leslie and Edith Dittess Decker, she was born April 14, 1924, in Newburgh. She was the widow of Frank Pavlik who died in 1995.
Mrs. Pavlik was active in St. George's Episcopal Parish and belonged to The Girls Friendly, Ladies Guild and the Business and Professional Women in Newburgh. She was a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital and volunteered to teach literacy.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Thomas Forrester of Pine Bush; a brother, Leslie Decker of Colorado; two grandchildren, Judith Dummings and her husband, Timothy of Walden, and Thomas Forrester and his wife, Tammy, of Wurtsboro; four grandchildren, Amanda, Daniel, Rebecca and Andrew; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday at St. George's Episcopal Parish in Newburgh with Mother Deborah Dresser officiating.
Burial was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
