Verne Freeland
Lawyer, 81
Verne Lee Freeland, that great lover of life and all things beautiful, passed from his body on Tuesday, October 10, 2006. He was 81 and savored life to the last.
Born in Mt. Hope, W.Va., he joined the Marines and served at Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Tinian during World War II.
After a stint at accounting and treasure hunting, he graduated tops in his class in Criminal Law from the University of Miami though he preferred to practice family and corporate law.
He fell in love and married his wife and best friend Lynn and they enjoyed 55 years inseparably together.
Verne and Lynn moved to S. Fallsburg from Miami in 1996 and he loved the country life and the many people he befriended.
Verne played piano by ear. His absolutely ecstatic singing and playing brought out the child's heart in everyone.
He had many inventions and designs. His child-safety seat inspired Chrysler to introduce safety seats for children in their vehicles. He acquired a patent for an airborne vehicle for which he was building a prototype.
He practiced law with a big heart and gave many of his services to those in need.
Verne was Santa Claus to many children and adults for many years and could melt any heart. The same exuberance was there when he coached little league baseball or wrestled the entire team from an inner tube in the pool. He tasted every sunrise, every sunset, a sighting of a deer or bear like someone would savor ice cream. There was no end to his inspiration, enthusiasm and his unrelenting joy. He has passed the torch to us all.
Survivors include sons, Tom Chi, Jim Freeland, and Russell Freeland; granddaughters, Nicole, Danielle, and Jane; grandsons, Alex and Jared; all of whom experience joy at the mere mention of his name.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 14 at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, Woodbourne.
