Dorothy Silverman of Liberty, a retired operator of Valued Properties Real Estate Agency and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at her home. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter the late Louis and Rose Rozofsky, she was born April 21, 1918, in Liberty.
Mrs. Silverman was a member of Ahavath Israel Synagogue. She was one of the founders of the Shandelee Music Festival, a graduate of Beaver College and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, David A. Silverman, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Karla Silverman of Potomac, Md., and Dean Silverman and Elizabeth Akers of McLean, Va.; and three grandchildren, Chloe Akers-Silverman, and Joshua and Amanda Silverman.
Services were held Sunday at the Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Burial was made in the Ahavath Israel Synagogue Cemetery in Liberty.

Clara ‘Sis’ White
Ret. Beautician, 79
Clara "Sis" White of Eldred, a retired beautician and owner of Clara's Beauty Shop in Eldred, and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at her home. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Carl and Frieda Kloss Wolff, she was born December 6, 1921, in Barryville. She was the widow of Gordon White.
Mrs. White was a past president of the Tri-State Hairdressers Association in Port Jervis.
She is survived by two brothers, Robert Wolff Sr. and Herbert Wolff and his wife, Margaret, all of Barryville; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Lauren Wolff, whom she loved and considered as a daughter.
Services were held Monday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with Charles Myers officiating.
Burial was made in Montoza Cemetery in Barryville.

Harriet F.S. Randall
Homemaker, 84
Harriet F. Smith Randall of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Chenango Bridge, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Charlotte, N.C. She was 84 years of age.
Born in Neversink on July 27, 1916, she was raised in Liberty.
She attended Syracuse University where she met and married Dr. Robert W. Smith. While he served on a hospital ship in the South Pacific, she cared for his daughter, Ann, and their daughter, June. Following World War II, she, Dr. Bob and his sister, Dr. Jean Smith, and other doctors began the Chenango Bridge Medical Group in the basement of the Smith home. It still thrives on Chenango Bridge Road, only a few steps from the original home.
After the passing of Dr. Bob, she married Ivan Randall and moved to Charlotte, N.C. She loved to travel and was famous for her gracious hospitality.
Mrs. Randall is survived by her husband, Ivan Randall of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Susan Taylor of Spring, Tex.; a son, Robert Smith Jr. of Colville, Wash; a sister, June Muthig of Middletown; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Randall step-family.
Services were held Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Chenango Bridge with the Rev. Judith Wanck officiating.
Burial was made in the Knox Cemetery in Ouaquaga.

Stanley Roucken
Ret. RR Brakeman, 87
Stanley Roucken of Port Jervis, a retired brakeman for the Erie Railroad in Port Jervis and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph and Julia Simons Roucken, he was born in Vandling, Pa., Lackawanna County. He was the widower of Evelyn Hyatt Roucken.
Mr. Roucken was a member of Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis, a member of Brother of Railroad Trainmen, and the National Rifle Association. He was an expert filer for Colt Mfg. Co., in Hartford, Conn., which consisted of filing trigger mechanisms for machine guns and rifles manufactured by Colt Rifle. He was also a retired laborer for the New York State Highway Department in Port Jervis.
He is survived by two sons, Walter Roucken and his wife, Lynn, of Port Jervis, and Wayne Roucken of Westbrookville; a sister, Stella Lipko of Middletown; two grandchildren, Michelle and Joseph Roucken; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held later with the Rev. Robert Cassidy officiating.
Burial will be made in Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

Ret. Bookkeeper, 82
Lillian R. Jacobs of Mountaindale, a retired bookkeeper for A. Jacobs & Sons Plumbing & Heating and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Slycox Health Care Facility in Newburgh. She was 82 years of age.
The daughter of the late Samuel and Shifra Ratner, she was born May 28, 1918, in Mountaindale. She was the widow of Abe Jacobs.
Mrs. Jacobs was a member of the Mountaindale Hadassah and the Mountaindale Synagogue.
She is survived by three sons, Stephen Jacobs of Woodbourne, and Edward and Howard Jacobs, both of Mountaindale; a daughter, Susan Jacobs of Key West, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Bessie Ratner of Rochester and Hattie Jacobs-Scharff of North Woodmere; a brother-in-law, Nathan Jacobs of Maryland; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at the Mountaindale Synagogue in Mountaindale with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.

Charlotte Backer Murran
Homemaker, 91
Charlotte Backer Murran, a homemaker and lifelong resident of Monticello, died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris after a short illness. She was 91.
The daughter of the late Carl and Emile Backer, she was born July 7, 1916 in the Bronx.
Charlotte was the widow of John J. Murran Sr. who predeceased her on July 28, 1997 and was also a member of St. Peter’s Church in Monticello.
She is the beloved mother of a son, John A. Murran Sr. and his wife, Jeanette; a daughter, Joan Reuss and her husband, Jack. Survivors also include her brother, William Backer; eight grandchildren, Debbie Braught and her husband, Bruce, John Murran Jr. and his fiancee, Karen, Patti Bock and her husband, Kenny, Ed Murran, Randy Murran and his wife, Rachel, Cindy Atkins and her husband, Terry, John S. Reuss III and his wife, Lisa, Ronald Reuss and his wife, Debra; fifteen great-grandchildren, Kira Bivens, Bruce and Chris Braught, John A. Murran III, Scott and Amber Bock, Kimberly, Caitlin and Ed Murran Jr., Robert Riley, Randy and Jaiden Murran, Chelsea and Sean Reuss and Stacey Reuss; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service was held on Saturday, July 28 at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial was made in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Monticello.

Arlene A. Berens of Liberty, a Quality Assurance Coordinator for Sullivan County ARC and an eighteen-year area resident died Friday, July 27, 2007 at her home. She was 54.
The daughter of Lillian Gottlieb Arum and the late Samuel Arum, she was born September 11, 1952 in Manhattan.
Arlene had been employed by the US Treasury Department for ten years prior to working with ARC.
Survivors include a daughter, Elise Stiglic and her husband, Ryan of Bristow, Va.; her mother, Lillian Arum of Liberty; a brother, Alfred Arum of New York City; a granddaughter, Ava Stiglic of Bristow, Va.
She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Berens; her father, Samuel Arum; and a brother, Walter Arum.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, July 31 at 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty. Cantor Michael Sturm will officiate.

Beulah M. Mac Arthur
Homemaker, 91
Beulah M. Mac Arthur, a lifelong resident of Bethel, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 91.
Beulah was born in Bethel on May 18, 1916 to the late Andrew and Lillian Madison Brucher. She was the widow of Ralph Mac Arthur who passed away in 1990. Beulah was a member of the White Lake Reformed Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by three sons, Douglas and wife, Lesley of King’s Park, William and wife, Julie of Kalamazoo, Mich. and John of Bethel; her daughter, Marcella Schwarz and husband, Edward of Oakdale; two sisters, Gertrude Smith of Smallwood and Marion Campbell and husband, Robert of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Mabel Brucher of Smallwood; fifteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 30 at Ramsay’s Funeral Homes, Inc. in Kauneonga Lake.
Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery, Bethel.

Bernard Murray Sr.
Veteran, Sales Manager, 73
Bernard Patrick Murray Sr., 73, of Southport, North Carolina, surrounded by his family, entered into rest peacefully at home on March 28, 2007. A funeral mass was held on April 2, 2007, at Sacred Heart Church in Southport, North Carolina.
Born on September 2, 1933, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Patrick and Anne (Lennon) Murray. Raised in Palisades Park, N.J., he was a graduate of Leonia HIgh School. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Peter’s College, where he also received a commission in the United States Army. He proudly served his country at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and following his military service had a long and successful business career in sales management with Phelps Dodge and with Century Brass. He was a longtime resident of Mahwah, N.J. and of Beaverkill.
Bernie was kind and considerate and filled with love, intelligence and sensitivity. He was loyal, honest, and compassionate. He appreciated the beauty in simple things like dinner with his friends and family, sitting on his porch reading the paper and talking politics, or simply chatting with a store clerk or a delivery person. He used his quick wit and humor to nurture his relationships and had the ability to see the good in most things. He lived his life without resentments and was at peace with himself and his spirituality. He considered his family his greatest blessing and he loved them unconditionally. Bernie will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Kathleen Willick Murray, at home; children Bernard Patrick Murray Jr., and his wife, Marijean of Long Valley, N.J.; Carolyn Murray Frankenburg and husband, Kurt, of Park City, Ut.; Jacqueline Murray Laird and husband, Randall, of Monroe; Albert Theodore Murray and wife, Patricia, of Highland Mills; Elizabeth Murray Jensen and husband, David, of Nazareth, Pa.; brother, John Murray and wife, Susan, of Mahwah, N.J.; sister Patricia Murray of New York; grandchildren Ricky, Gabrielle, Liam, Alex, Packy, Sophie, Maureen, Fiona, Luisa, Kate, AJ, and Sarah; nephews Keith, Brian and Stephen; numerous cousins, and many, many dear friends.
A graveside service and interment of ashes will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2007 in the Beaverkill Valley Cemetery, Beaverkill. Monsignor William Collins will officiate.
