System Mechanic - Clean, repair, protect, and speed up your PC!Dr. Jaroslav Sturm
Ret. Attorney, 93
Dr. Jaroslav Sturm of Damascus Township, Beach Lake, Pa., died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at his home. He was 93 years of age.
He was born on May 29, 1907, in Bohemia, which, at that time, belonged to the Austro Hungarian Empire. He got his doctorate in law at Charles University in Prague and became an attorney in his native country.
As an attorney, he always helped the people who were somehow discriminated against, not only by other people, but by the regime. Throughout his practice, he had to live under Nazi Germany who, from 1939 through 1945, occupied his native country, then under communist dictatorship since 1948 until his escape in 1957. By helping the dissidents, he was in danger of persecution and finally, when he escaped to freedom, leaving all his belongings behind, he was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison. When this happened, he was already with his family in a refugee camp in Vienna.
In 1960, he came to America and tried to make a living for himself and his family in different odd jobs and ventures, working very hard — sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Finally, after all his efforts, he was left with the chicken farm where he was living until the day he died.
Even though his American dream did not come true, he loved America and never wanted to go back to his native land. His American dream of success was not fulfilled, but at the end of his life he found very good friends who understood him and treated him as the hero that he was. They understood him and gave him spiritual and physical help.
The family is especially grateful to Hospice St. John and especially Laurel and Kathy.
He is survived by his wife, Ludmila Podhradsky Sturm, at home; two sons, Milan George Sturm and Jaroslav O. Sturm, both of New York City; a daughter, Eva Novak of Manhasset, N.J.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be no services.
