Ret. Boilermaker, 71
Edward John Ludwigson of Loch Sheldrake, a retired boilermaker, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Katherine Ludwigson, he was born June 26, 1929, in New York City.
An active member of the Woodbourne and Loch Sheldrake community for over 15 years, he was an usher at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a member of the Elks Club. Mr. Ludwigson, an Eagle Scout, enjoyed walking in the woods and picking berries to share with his many friends. He was an avid bowler, a bird lover, a coin collector and a proud father.
He is survived by two daughters, Katherine Testino and her husband, Bob, of Tampa, Fla., and Jennifer Ludwigson of New York City; a son, Edward Ludwigson of Brookline, Mass; and two grandchildren, Samantha and Marisa.
Services were held Friday evening at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
Cremation was made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Dr. Carl K. Heins
Surgeon, 83
Carl K. Heins of Monticello, a leading surgeon and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Spring Valley, after a short stay. He was 83 years of age.
The son of the late William and Florence Heins, he was born June 3, 1917, in Albany.
Dr. Heins received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Colgate University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University. He did his internship at Bellevue Hospital in 1944 and obtained his specialty in surgery at the Kingsbridge VA Hospital in the Bronx.
He was the owner and operator of the former Hamilton Avenue Hospital in Monticello and had a medical practice in Monticello for 31 years.
Dr. Heins was a member of the American Medical Association, a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the International College of Surgeons and a member of the Founding Fathers of Abdominal Surgeons. He was chief of surgery at five local hospitals.
During World War II, Dr. Heins served as a flight surgeon in the 7th Strategic Command Post of the South Pacific Medical Division where he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.
Dr. Heins was also a FAA medical examiner, held his own pilot's license and had been operator of the Monticello Airport Inc. since 1950. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and an honorable member of the Kentucky Colonels.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Harris Heins, of Monticello; a son and daughter-in-law, Clark and Phyllis Heins of Monticello; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Michael Cibull of Lexington, Kty., and Karen and George Barone of Monticello; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Carol Heins of Monticello, Theodore and Grace Heins of Ferndale and Richard and Carol Heins of Monticello; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Heins and Florence Heins, both of Monticello; three grandchildren, Christopher and Thomas Cibull of Lexington, Kty., and Barbara Barone of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Heins and Alfred Heins Sr., both of Monticello.
There were no services.

John Popolillo Sr.
Shoe Repairman, 75
John A. Popolillo Sr. of Callicoon, a former tailor, a shoe repairman and a retired school bus driver for the Delaware Valley Central School District, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Michael and Doris Braco Popolillo, he was born June 23, 1925, in Yonkers. He was the widower of Victoria Corigliano Popolillo.
Mr. Popolillo was a member of the Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps and the Hankins Assembly of God Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees of the U.S. Navy.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a devoted father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and friends."
He is survived by two sons, John A. Popolillo Jr. of Callicoon and Michael Popolillo and his wife, Patti, of Lake Huntington; a sister, Geraldine Minckler of Brookville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michael and Brian Popolillo of Lake Huntington, and Kristen and Danielle Popolillo of Canastota; several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Popolillo, and two nephews, John Minckler and Bruce Minckler.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon with the Rev. Robert Paquet officiating.
Burial will be made in the Callicoon Cemetery in Callicoon.

Helen C. Sergeant
Retired RN, 80
Helen C. Sergeant of Eldred, a lifelong area resident and a registered nurse, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late Edward and Kathryn Livingston Kuen, she was born April 20, 1920, in Shohola, Pa. She was the widow of B. Grant Sergeant who died July 18, 1982.
Mrs. Sergeant was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse in the Philippines with the rank of lieutenant.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a great Mom and Grandmother, keeping her family close and together."
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and William McBride and Laura and Gary Batzel, all of Eldred; two sisters, Clareta Sergeant of Woodhaven, Queens, and Arlene Kuen of Barryville; five grandchildren, Bill McBride and Aaron McBride, both of Woodhaven, Fla., Michael Batzel and Stacy Batzel, both of Eldred, and Gary Batzel of Port Jervis; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Hazel Anastasio, and a brother, Arthur Kuen.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville, with Pastor Linda Bohs officiating.
Burial will be made in Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.

Elsie VanIderstine
Retired RN, 92
Elsie VanIderstine of Schenectady, a retired registered nurse and a longtime Callicoon resident, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Rev. Wilfred and Anna Smith VanIderstine, she was born November 22, 1908, in Wallington, N.J.
A 1929 graduate of the Brooklyn Methodist-Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, "Stine," as she was affectionately known, became head nurse upon the opening of the Callicoon Hospital in 1931, owned and operated by the late Dr. George R. Mills. When that hospital closed, she worked at the Grover M. Hermann Division of Community General Hospital until her retirement in 1979. She maintained a home in Callicoon until just recently when it became necessary for her to move to Schenectady to be with her family.
Miss VanIderstine was a member of the Callicoon United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women of the church, the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens and the Grover Hermann Hospital Auxiliary, all in Callicoon.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including her caregiver Risü VanIderstine, and nephews; a brother-in-law, Cain Stabler of Middletown, and a sister-in-law, Bernice VanIderstine of Voorheesville. She was predeceased by two sisters, Emelyn Miller and Edith Stabler.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon and are incomplete at press time.

Margaret Del Favero
Caterer, 68
Margaret N. "Peg" Del Favero of Livingston Manor, a lifelong area resident who enjoyed catering, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at her home. She was 68 years of age.
The daughter of the late Roger E. and Hazel Conklin Kneff, she was born August 27, 1932, in Downsville.
She worked with her husband at his business, the Sullivan Tile Supply Co. in Livingston Manor. Mrs. Del Favero loved to cook and catered many dinners for organizations, funerals, wedding receptions, and other affairs.
She was a member, past matron and current trustee of Sullivan Chapter No. 298, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church, both in Livingston Manor.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Del Favero, at home; three sons, Richard L. and his wife, Roxanne Del Favero, of Albany, Thomas H. Del Favero of Liberty, and James I. and his wife, Kara Del Favero, of Castleton; a sister, Elizabeth M. Vernold of Downsville; two brothers, Harold Kneff of Suffolk, Va., and Homer C. Bull of Tucson, Ariz.; and two granddaughters, Cara Del Favero and Collette Del Favero. She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.
Friends may call at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Sullivan Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold services at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be made in Paige Cemetery in Downsville.

Myrtha G. Brown, 64, and her son, Jeffrey T. Brown, 35, both of Livingston Manor, died April 18, 2001, as the result of injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in the Town of Fallsburg.

Donna F. Frank
Homemaker, 62
Donna Fargo Frank of Syracuse, a homemaker, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. She was 62 years of age.
The daughter of Rev. H. Markham and Dorothy Fargo, she was born November 14, 1938, in Pennsylvania. She was the widow of Charles Frank.
She was a 1957 graduate of Liberty High School and Practical Bible Training School in Johnson City in 1960.
Mrs. Frank is survived by three daughters, Tina Frank, Debora Frank and Carla Frank, and three grandchildren, all of Syracuse; her parents of Livingston Manor; a sister, Sheila Schleiermacher of Livingston Manor; and several aunts, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, David Frank.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday at the Giminski-Wysocki Funeral Home in Syracuse.
Burial will be made in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse.
