Sydney Miller
Ret. Teacher, 98

Sydney Miller of Long Eddy, a retired teacher and an accomplished organist, died Friday, February 1, 2002, at his home. He was 98 years of age.
The son of the late Frederick and Nellie Lyon Miller, he was born April 22, 1903, in Oneonta. He was the widower of Kathryn Zuercher Miller who died in 1936 and Clara Armstrong Miller who died in 1979.
After working as a painter foreman for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad for nine years, he decided to teach school. A graduate of Oneonta High School, he attended Syracuse University, Hartwick College and New York University. Mr. Miller taught at Hartwick College but liked high school age students better. A teacher in the former Long Eddy High School, he taught music, history, social studies, Latin, Spanish and then decided to concentrate on teaching English. He retired from the Delaware Valley Central School in 1963.
Mr. Miller also spoke German. He was an accomplished organist, played the pipe organ and directed choirs in several places, the last being in St. Petersburg, Fla. He had also played in Emory United Methodist Church in Hancock as a substitute organist.
Before retiring, he and his wife traveled to Europe, Africa and the West Indies, as well as throughout the United States. They wintered several years in Florida and Texas.
He is survived by a son, Merlyn "Jack" Miller of Oregon; and a grandson, Jack. He was predeceased by a son, Marshall Miller, who died May 8, 1998, a daughter-in-law, Kate Miller, and a grandson, Marshall Miller, who died in January of 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel in Hancock with the Rev. Steven Knutsen, pastor of the Hankins United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be made in the Halsey Cemetery in Long Eddy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Long Eddy Fire Department, Route 97, Long Eddy, N.Y. 12760.

Justin A. Smalls
Infant

Justin Anthony Smalls of Harris died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at the Albany Medical Center in Albany.
The son of Clarence and Tina Vandermark Smalls, he was born in Albany on November 5, 2001.
He is survived by his parents, at home; his maternal grandparents, Lillian Vandermark of Livingston Manor and Thomas and Dorothy Vandermark of Little Plymouth, Va.; his paternal grandparents, Charlie and Evelyn Parrish of South Fallsburg; his great-grandmother, Mildred Vandermark of Monticello; three sisters, Alicia Cardona of Harris, Ashley and Danielle Smalls of Livingston Manor; two brothers, Dante Smalls of Harris and Clarence Darnell Smalls Jr. of Livingston Manor; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held Monday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello with Rev. John Lynch officiating.
Burial was made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Herbert Robinson
Ret. Accountant, 88

Herbert W. Robinson. a former accountant for the former Pelton Dairies in Monticello and also the Dunn Coal Co. in Cortland, died Friday, February 1, 2002, in a nursing home in Whiting, N.J. He was 88 years of age.
The son of the late Thomas Winfield and Arminda Williams Robertson, he was born May 8, 1913, in Middletown. He was the widower of Marion Dunn Robinson.
Mr. Robinson was a member and a former deacon of the United Presbyterian Church in Cortland.
He is survived by three daughters, Ann Clements of Levittown, Pa., Mary Richardson of Kinderhook and Jane Sisung of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Alberta Beiling of Liberty; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Hicks officiating.
Burial will be made in the Cortland Rural Cemetery in Cortland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cortland Fire Police Squad, 21 Court St., Cortland, N.Y. 13045.

Robert I. Conklin, 95

Robert I. Conklin of Mt. Laurel, N.J., a former resident of Port Jervis, Newburgh and Port Orange, Fla., died Saturday, January 26, 2002. He was 95 years of age.
He was the widower of Olive Irene Culver Conklin.
Mr. Conklin is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Walter R. and Patricia Conklin of Marlton, N.J.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday at the Westbrookville United Methodist Church in Westbrookville.
Burial will be made in the Westbrookville Cemetery.

Nancy Jannarone
Homemaker, 58

Nancy J. Jannarone of Port Jervis, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. She was 58 years of age.
The daughter of the late Dennis and Catherine Hess DeGroat Sr., she was born September 5, 1943, in Port Jervis.
In a family statement, it was said, "A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she touched many hearts and was loved by all."
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Jannarone, at home; a son, Vincent H. Hallock Jr. of Port Jervis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri and Glenn Hastings of Monticello and Terri and Robert Ey Jr. of Port Jervis; two brothers, Dennis DeGroat Jr. and Wellington DeGroat, both of Port Jervis; five sisters, Joyce Slotko of Bethany, Pa., Elizabeth Conklin of Rio, Evelyn Mills of Huguenot, Virginia Colo of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Dolores Finch of Port Jervis; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Hastings, Shannon Hastings and Jay Hastings, all of Monticello, Eric Hastings of Houston, Tex., and Robby Ey of Port Jervis.
Services were held Monday at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Rev. Dan Kantenwein officiating.
Burial was made in the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

Martha L. Capo
Ret. Manager, 85

Martha L. Capo of Sparrowbush, a retired manager for Allen Furniture Store in Corning and a five-year area resident, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles and Anna Chilson, she was born May 24, 1916, in Ulysses, Pa.
A graduate of Corning High School, she was a member of St. Vincent's R.C. Church in Corning.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Kevin Hipsman of Sparrowsbush; two sisters, Sue Moulthrop of Youngsville and Agnes Cummings of Corning; two grandchildren, Amanda Hipsman and Eric Hipsman, both of Sparrowbush; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Wesley Chilson.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at noon on Tuesday at St. Vincent's R.C. Church in Corning with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hyland Ave., Suite 4B, Staten Island, N.Y. 10305; your local chapter of the American Heart Association; or to St. Vincent's R.C. Church in Corning, N.Y. 14830.

Britta Dann
Homemaker, 88

Britta Dann of East Branch, a longtime area resident, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank E. and Ella May Burns Dann, she was born May 13, 1913, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Miss Dann attended the East Branch United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Doolittle of Locke.
Services were held Monday at the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe with the Rev. Donald Baker officiating.
Burial was made in the East Branch Cemetery in East Branch.

Frieda Neumann
Retiree of Yaun's, 87

Frieda Neumann, a former 63-year resident of Youngsville, died Friday, February 1, 2002, at River Terrace Healthcare in Lancaster, Mass. She was 87 years of age.
She was bon May 22, 1914, in New Britain, Conn. She and her husband met at the German Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the Bronx and were married November 14, 1936.
In a family statement, it was said, "Frieda was a devoted, nurturing wife and mother."
Mrs. Neumann was active through the years in the church both in Youngsville and Kingston and was an organist and teacher in the children's divisions. She was a former den mother, a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Youngsville Ladies Aid, PTA and participated in numerous other community activities and organizations. When her husband was called into the service during World War II she took over his office job, and then she worked with him at Yaun Company in Liberty for 17 years.
She is survived by her husband, George Neumann; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Craigan Gray of Weaverville, N.C. and Susan and Edward Kraycer of Liberty; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Nancy Neumann of Lancaster, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur Arendt of St. Petersburg, Fla. She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Arendt.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Sunday, from 1 to 2 p.m.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday with Pastor Warren Ruf of Leominster, Mass., officiating.

Alfred Grover
Dairy Farmer, 62

Alfred Grover of Bethel, a lifetime dairy farmer for Russell's Dairy Farm in Bethel, died at his home on Sunday, February 3, 2002. He was 62 years of age.
The son of the late George and Elsie Kent Grover, he was born July 31, 1939, in Sussex, N.J.
He is survived by his adopted family of over 50 years, Harold and Lynn Russell and family of Bethel; a brother, Kenneth "Red" Kent of Sussex, N.J.; three sisters, Marion South of Cornwall, Dorothy Yarashes and her husband, John, of Luzerne, Pa., and Ruth Syperda of Greenwood Lake; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, George Jr. and William Grover, and a sister, Janet Babcock.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon.
Services will be held at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Rodgers officiating.
Burial will be made in the Beemersville Cemetery in Beemersville, N.J.
