The son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Howard C. Van Keuren, he was born July 13, 1921, in Jeffersonville.
Mr. Van Keuren was a graduate of Narrowsburg Central School and Delhi Technical Institute in Delhi. After joining the U.S. Navy in 1941, he was assigned to the Seabees and was stationed in the Phillipine Islands.
Upon discharge from the service in 1945, he returned to Narrowsburg and after working as a carpenter for several years, established the contracting firm of Van Keuren Construction Corporation, which was well-known throughout Sullivan County and surrounding areas. "Al" as he was familiarly known, was a great friend of young people and will be remembered for his custom of giving young lads of working age a chance to learn the construction business with his company.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a longtime member and past president of the Cherokee Preserve Hunting Club in Bethel. His greatest joy in life was spending time at his camp at "Pucky Huddle," the name given to the group of camps located near Mallory Pond on the club grounds. Many beautiful trophy heads and fish adorn the interior walls of his A-frame — momentoes of the numerous times he went big game hunting in various parts of the world.
Mr. Van Keuren also belonged to the Highland-Tusten Memorial Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Narrowsburg, Elks Lodge #2153 in Charlotte County, the Punta Gorda American Legion and was a past president of the Van Keuren Cemetery Association in Swan Lake.
