Dr. David Van Vleet
Durham Dentist, 73

Dr. David E . Van Vleet, a 35-year dentist of Durham, N.C., died Saturday, January 8, 2005, after a lengthy and courageous battle with a malignant brain tumor.
The son of the late H. Lee and Edna Cassidy Van Vleet, he was born December 16, 1931, in Sharon, Conn. He spent his early life in Woodbourne.
After receiving a degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He then attended Duke University and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, where he received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1961. He was again called upon to serve in the United States Air Force as an officer during the Vietnam War.
In a family statement, it was said, "Dr. Van Vleet was dedicated to both his profession and patients. Unable to practice dentistry due to his illness, he often stated that what he missed most was his patients. He appreciated and held a deep affection for his loyal patients."
In the course of his career, Dr Van Vleet received numerous professional awards and recognitions, was involved in an number of community organizations, and served as an officer in local professional organizations. He is listed in "Who's Who in America." At the time of his death, he was a life member of the American Dental Association, Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity. Fe'de'ration Dentaire Internationale, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health, the Duke Alumni Association, the UNC Alumni Association and Duke Memorial United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Husted Van Vleet, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, D. Eric and Susan Van Vleet of Durham, N.C., and Lee M. and Candance Van Vleet of Hillsborough, N.C.; two grandchildren, Felicity Lynn Van Vleet and David E . Van Vleet III, both of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Priscilla Scanlan of South Otselic; a brother, Henry Lee Van Vleet of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Capt. Nancy Lynn Van Vleet, a brother, Charles, and two sisters, Vivian Hadden and Mary Jane.
Services will be held on Tuesday at the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel in Durham, N.C., with the Rev. Frank Venable and Rev. Jim Bell officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 W. Chapel Hill St., Durham, N.C. 27701; to Christ the King Moravian Church, 4405 Hope Valley Rd., Durham N.C. 27707; or to Duke Community Hospital Services, 4321 Medical Park Dr., Suite 101, Durham N.C. 27704.

Seymour Feldberg, 86
Owned Monticello Cabinet

Seymour Feldberg of Monticello, the retired owner and operator of Monticello Cabinet, died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 86 years of age.
The son of the late Morris and Lena Reing Feldberg, he was born June 11, 1918, in New York City.
Mr. Feldberg was a member of the Board of Directors for over 40 years and a lifelong member of Temple Sholom. He built the wood doors that cover the ARC and the stained glass Star of David that hangs in the Temple. He also served for many years as the unofficial caretaker of the Temple that he loved so much.
He was involved in scouting, starting in 1940 as Scoutmaster of Troop 83 in Monticello, a position he served for 26 years. Mr. Feldberg received his Eagle Scout in 1953 as an adult, was a member of the Order of the Arrow and received the Silver Beaver Award in 1965. He was involved in the planning and directing of the Klondike Derby and received the American Legion Scouter of the Year award in 1973. His most important award was received in 2004 when he received the Seymour Feldberg Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Feldberg is survived by his wife, Sarah Feldberg, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Alexandra Feldberg of Fishkill and Robert and Henrietta Feldberg of Oyster Bay; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and John Menzie of Pearl River; a sister, Diana Levine of Monticello; a sister-in-law, Shirley Feldberg of Monticello; five grandchildren, Debby, Robyn, Jeffrey, Lisa and Melissa; and a great-granddaughter, Sierra. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Theodore.
Services were held Sunday at Temple Sholom in Monticello with Cantor Michael Sturm officiating.
Burial was made in Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello.
Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Sholom, Dillon Rd., Monticello, N.Y. 12701; to Hudson Valley Council Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 374, Salisbury Mills, N.Y. 12577 or to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Frank J. Haddock
Ret. Carpenter, 81

Frank James Haddock of Swan Lake, a retired carpenter with Union Local #19, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Mary Judge Haddock, he was born February 24, 1923, in Newburgh.
Mr. Haddock is survived by his wife, Joan Pearce Haddock, at home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary and Robin Haddock of Oneonta, Kevin Haddock of Swan Lake, and Wayne and Nadine Haddock of Groton; four grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Haddock of Oneonta, and Matthew and Elizabeth Haddock of Groton; a sister, Anne Haddock of Jeffersonville; and two nieces.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation will be made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Mabel Parsons
Homemaker, 90

Mabel Parsons of North Branch died Monday, January 10, 2005, at the Roscoe Nursing Home. She was 90 years of age.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville and are incomplete at press time.

Dorothy Marshall
Ret. Clerk, 77

Dorothy Marshall of Glen Spey, a retired clerk for the Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Center in West Haverstraw and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Rose McAloon Dean, she was born March 16, 1926, in New York City.
Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Lumberland Seniors and the Lumberland Fire Department Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph R. Marshall, at home; three daughters, Kathleen Lent and her partner, Donna Pollucci of Monroe, Ellen Huslinger and her husband, Stephen, of the Town of Greenville, and Dorothy Siegel of New Hampton; a son, Joseph R. Marshall and his wife, Catherine, of Nyack; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Keriann, Bryan, Shoix, Stephen, Katrina and Christopher S.; and five great-grandchildren, Keith, Alyson, Damion, Elizabeth and Amelia.
Services were held Monday evening at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Rev. Bernard MacDonald officiating.
Burial was made in the Pinelawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lumberland Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Glen Spey, N.Y. 12737.

Walter W. Metzger
Ret. From DPW, 98

Walter W. Metzger of Yulan, retired from the Sullivan County Department of Public Works, and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at his home while in the care of Mary Ellen Walton. He was 98 years of age.
The son of the late Fred and Mary Cole Metzger, he was born February 16, 1905, in Yulan. He was the widower of Dorothea Metzger.
In his early years he was a runner for the New York Stock Exchange and later took a job with the Department of Public Works. He and his wife built the house he lived in. It was originally a log cabin with logs taken from his own land.
Mr. Metzger was a life member of the Yulan Rod and Gun Club and a life member of the Tusten Senior Citizens. He loved to hunt and fish. At the age of 95, he was forbidden to go ice fishing by his niece and nephew. With many stories to tell and things to teach about wildlife, flowers and nature, he was a joy to listen to and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He contributed much to the history of Yulan.
He is survived by his niece, Dorothy Waltemath of Kerville, Tex.; a nephew, Frederick Honkohl of Woodstock, Ga.; and six grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville with the Rev. Eddie Nilsen officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 63, Eldred, N.Y. 12732 or to the Yulan Fire Department, Yulan, N.Y. 12792.

Louise Becker
Homemaker, 74

Louise Becker of Bloomingburg, a homemaker and a longtime area resident, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at her home. She was 74 years of age.
The daughter of the late Luca and Assunta Castelli Nacca, she was born June 10, 1928, in North Bergen, N.J.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Raymond Becker Sr. of Bloomingburg; four sons, Raymond Becker Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Ridgefield, N.J., Joseph Becker and James Becker and his partner, Jim Brandon, all of Staten Island, and Michael Becker of North Bergen, N.J.; two daughters, Lois Tompkins of Bloomingburg and Ellen Berg and her husband, Stuart, of Wallkill; seven grandchildren, Charlie, Bryan, Rena, Victoria, William, Erika and Luke; and a sister, Pondi Vasilik and her husband, John, of Bergenfield, N.J. She was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters.
Services were held Monday at the Cornelius, Dodd and Connell Funeral Home in Middletown with the Rev. Betty Beach officiating.
Interment was made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

Angel Cruz
Warehouse Man, 59

Angel Cruz of Middletown, a warehouse man for Wakefern of Middletown and a 40-year area resident, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 59 years of age.
The son of the late Alphonso and Otilia Martinez Cruz, he was born March 7, 1944, in Puerto Rico.
Mr. Cruz was a member of the United States Army Reserve.
He is survived by his former wife, Elba Cruz of Ellenville, and their five children, Peter Aponte of Napanoch, Victor Aponte of Warwick, Angelo Cruz of Miami, Fla., Wanda Cruz of Monticello, and Alphonso Cruz of Ellenville; his former wife, Lourdes Cruz, and their two children, Edward Cruz and David Cruz, all of Wurtsboro; a brother, Alphonso Cruz of Puerto Rico; and several grandchildren.
Services were held Monday at the Loucks Funeral Home in Ellenville.
Burial was made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Charles B. Snyder
Ret. Businessman, 82

Charles "Charlie" B. Snyder of Montgomery, a longtime resident of and a former local business owner in the Village of Montgomery, died Thursday, March 27, 2003. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Charles A. and Ethel Stevens Snyder, he was born May 28, 1920, in Newburgh. He was the widower of Catherine Lynn Snyder to whom he was married nearly 50 years.
Mr. Snyder was a World War II Army veteran and had received a Purple Heart. He was a 52-year member of the Wallkill Hook, Ladder and Hose Company, the Montgomery Fire Department and a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Montgomery.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a devoted family man who truly loved the Village of Montgomery."
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter C. and Deborah Snyder of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Steven F. and Nina Snyder of Bloomingburg; four grandchildren, Joshua and Kari Snyder of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Derek and Taryn Snyder of Boston, Mass., and Bloomingburg respectively; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harrison and Edward, and a sister, Charolette.
Services and burial were private at the Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Milz officiating.
