Mildred Mathis
Homemaker, 63

Mildred Mathis of Monticello, a homemaker, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 63 years of age.
The daughter of Lee Postell Lawrence and the late Richard Lawrence, she was born March 16, 1940, in Wilmington, N.C.
The oldest of nine children, she was an avid bingo player. She attended PS 68 in Manhattan and relocated to Monticello where she attended the Monticello Central School District. Mrs. Mathis was also a presser for Ellery's Dry Cleaners for over ten years.
In a family statement, it was said, "Mildred was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister and a friend to many. She will be deeply missed by all."
She is survived by her mother of Monticello; six children, Veronica Jones, Christina Samuels, Steven Lawrence and his wife, Gloria, Robert Mathis Jr. and his wife, Cindy, Ramona Mathis and her companion, Collins, all of Monticello and Harry Mathis and his wife, Kim, of Damascus, Md.; her former husband, Robert Mathis of Sanford, Fla.; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Joyce and James Baker of Stockton, Ala., Doris Lawrence of San Carlos, Calif., and Ann and Eric Young and Semmie and James Johnson, all of Monticello; two brothers, Harry Lawrence and Otha Lawrence, both of Monticello; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 24 nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Ann Lawrence, a sister, Naomi, and a brother, Richard.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Rd., Monticello, with the Rev. Mervin Armstead officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Betty Lindsley
Ret. Receptionist, 81

Betty Lindsley of White Sulphur Springs, a retired receptionist for the Workmen's Compensation Board and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, March 6, 2003. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Eben and Amy Sutherland Hill, she was born on the same street where she lived her life. She was the widow of Burton Lindsley who died October 27, 2000 in their 58th year of marriage.
Services were held Monday at the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Mrs. Lindsley was a lifelong and active member of the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, a member of the White Sulphur Springs Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary and a charter member of the Laurel Hill Cemetery Association in White Sulphur Springs.
Burial was made in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.
Memorial contributions may be made to the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, N.Y. 12787.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty.

William Murtha
Ret. Truck Driver, 87

William J. Murtha of Monticello, a retired truck driver for the Schaefer Brewery in Brooklyn and a longtime area resident, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late William and Mary Penthony Murtha, he was born September 6, 1915, in Brooklyn.
A World War II Army veteran, Mr. Murtha was a member of the Schwanga Mountain Post No. 4947, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Bloomingburg, and a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Monticello.
He is survived by his soulmate, Melanie Rapp; a sister, Irene Albury, a nephew, Don Albury, seven grand-nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Tom and Carolyn Fauci and William, Richard, Joseph and Jennifer Albury; and a great-grandnephew and great-grandniece, Michael and Samantha Fauci. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mabel and Dorothy Murtha, and a nephew, Richard Albury Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Monticello with the Rev. Robert Ginel officiating.
Burial was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons St., P.O. Box 7E, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello.

Eugene Pietrucha
Dock Supervisor, 60

Eugene Pietrucha, a 33-year resident of Callicoon and a dock supervisor for Yellow Freight in Maybrook, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 60 years of age.
The son of the late Walter and Helen Pando Pietrucha, he was born April 13, 1942, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Pietrucha was a member of the Hortonville Volunteer Fire Department and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Beryl Kolbe Pietrucha, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Lisa Pietrucha of Youngsville; two daughters, Christina Reich and her husband, Tom, of Greene, and Barbara Pietrucha, at home; a granddaughter, Dorothy Reich; a sister, Angela Sarkis and her husband, Peter, of Omaha, Neb.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Joseph and Tammi Pietrucha of California, Edward Pietrucha of Brooklyn and Tadz and Mari Pietrucha of Brooklyn; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Kolbe of Lady Lake, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Laura and Sophie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiating.
Cremation will be made at Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hortonville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 71, Hortonville, N.Y. 12745.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.

Elizabeth Thornton
Ret. Bank Clerk, 85

Elizabeth M. Thornton of Youngsville, a retired bank clerk for Morgan Guaranty Bank in Manhattan, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Michael and Jane Enright Thornton, she was born July 9, 1917, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Thornton was a member of St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Jeffersonville and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in New York City.
She is survived by a niece, Alice Perry of Youngsville; and a godchild, Betty Ann Zwingraf of Piscataway, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville with Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiating.
Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6913 Arlington Rd., Bethesda, Md. 20814.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Jim Artale, 62
Code Enforcement Offc.

Jim Artale of Rock Hill, a code enforcement officer for the Village of Monticello, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. He was 62 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Sadie Sabatino Artale, he was born October 8, 1940, in Brooklyn.
A veteran of the United States Army, he was a member of various state and local building and code enforcement organizations, and a member and past president of the Sullivan County Audubon Society.
He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Ellen Artale of Mount Pleasant, S. C., and Bob and Gloria Artale of Golden, Colo.; two nieces, Lynn Artale and Susan Miles; and a nephew, Ryan Artale.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Timothy Wiggins officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sullivan County Audubon Society, P.O. Box 30, Loch Sheldrake, NY. 12759.

Edward H. Clark
Ret. Carpenter, 68

Edward H. Clark of Bethel, a retired carpenter, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 68 years of age.
The son of the late Edward and Dorothy Clark, he was born September 20, 1934, in Brooklyn.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a loving family-oriented man who was proud of and devoted to his family. His talents seemed limitless. He was a perfectionist in all he did: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, musician, artist and veteran of the US Marines. Words cannot express how much he was loved and how deeply he will be missed by those who knew him. He was a strong man who gave a courageous battle to the very end. Now he can finally have the rest he so deserves. Those whose lives he touched will not forget him."
Mr. Clark is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Victoria Clark of Bethel, Roy and Lisa Clark of Monticello and Steven and Tara Clark of Youngsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Connie Clark of Arizona; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Anthony, Jamie, Steven, Jessica, Jennine, Nicholas, Brittany and Troy; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Pantino, and two brothers, Robert and Thomas Clark.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roy Shaffer of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty with full military honors.

Rosemary Miller
Ret. Office Mgr., 62

Rosemary Miller of Wallkill, a retired office manager for the Wallkill Central School District, and a part-time resident of Venice, Fla., died Thursday, March 6, 2003, in Wallkill. She was 62 years of age.
The daughter of the late Gaetano and Filomena Iazzetta Apicella, she was born April 29, 1940, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Gardiner and served on the parish council. She was a volunteer at the Horton Hospital in Middletown and at Bon Secours Hospital in Venice, Fla. A past president of the Ostrander Parents Club, Mrs. Miller also served as a troop leader and a neighborhood chairman for the Girl Scouts of America. She was a past president of Local 1000 CSEA-Wallkill Division, a class mom and a Girls' Little League coach throughout all of her children's school years.
In a family statement, it was said, "Mom will be remembered for her love of all children, her devotion to her church and community, her strength and courage and her passion for bingo."
Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Harry G. Miller, at home; two daughters, Robin North and her husband, Tim, of Dickinson, Tex., and Lisa Calhoun of Monticello; a son, Thomas Miller and his wife, Beth, of Gardiner; four grandsons, Joshua and his wife, Ginna, Dustin, Ian and Stanley; four granddaughters, Leslie, Rebecca, Angelina and Kayla; a great-grandson, Damon; a sister, Theresa Apicella of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Gardiner with Fr. Robert M. Panek officiating.
Burial was made in St. Charles Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons St., P.O. Box 7E, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.
