Donald Smith of Neversink, a self-employed plumber and electrician, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 59 years of age.
The son of Everett and Dorothy Kaeter Smith, he was born March 16, 1943, in Kingston.
Mr. Smith was a former member of the Claryville Fire Department. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved children and animals.
He is survived by his father, Everett Smith, and his friend, Marie Ward, of Grahamsville; his mother of Claryville; his longtime companion, Sharon Kelly of Neversink; two sons, Kevin Smith and his wife, Paula, of Claryville, and Gregory Smith of the state of Florida; a daughter, Penny, of Connecticut; a brother and sister-in-law, Dwayne and Susan Smith of Claryville; a stepson, Preston Kelly and his wife, Patricia, of Grahamsville; a stepdaughter, April Kockas, and her husband, Robert, of Neversink; seven grandchildren; a niece; a grand-nephew; two aunts, an uncle; and several cousins.
The family will receive friends at a memorial service at the Claryville Firehouse on Sunday, March 16, at 1 p.m.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
John P. Ampf
Assembler, 61
John Peter Ampf, a longtime resident of Port Jervis and an assembler for Occupations Inc., in Newburgh, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 61 years of age.
The son of Minnie Flor Ampf and the late William Ampf, he was born November 7, 1941, in Jersey City, N.J.
He is survived by his mother of Port Jervis; two sisters, Barbara Maillet and her husband, Gary, of Port Jervis, and Susan Bloom and her companion, Gerald Talmage, of Barryville; a nephew; and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Burial was made in the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J.

Dorothy Moss

Dorothy Moss of Las Vegas, Nev., an administrative assistant for the Clark County (Nevada) District Attorney's Office, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. She was 69 years of age.
The daughter of the late David and Sarah Banner Shostak, she was born August 1, 1933, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Norman Moss who died June 1, 1986.
Mrs. Moss was a member of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue in Monticello.
In a family statement, it was said, "Dorothy spent her whole life loving her family and friends. She gave her soul and heart to all around her. Her caring presence will always be remembered."
She is survived by three sons, Stuart Moss and his wife, Lori, of Oneonta, and Mitchell Moss and David Moss, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; three daughters, Diane Moss of Monticello, Roberta Conde and her husband, Jack, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Pamela Villegas and her husband, Gilberto, of Albany; a brother, Jerome Shostak of Staten Island; a sister, Selma Rosenbaum of Lawrence; five grandchildren, Melissa, Daniel, Joshua, Jennifer and Victoria; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Miriam Krasner.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 186 Broadway, Monticello, with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating.
The family will observe shiva at the home of Diane Moss, 99 Park Ave., #10, Monticello, starting Saturday night.
Burial will be made in the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello.

Joseph R. Vik
Ret. Bldg. Supt., 94
Joseph R. Vik of Forestburgh, a 30-year area resident and a retired building superintendent for Local 32B in New York City, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at the Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton, N.J. He was 94 years of age.
The widower of Borghild Katherine Vik who died October 12, 1991, after 58 years of marriage, he was born in Grimstad, Norway on January 23, 1909.
After living in New York City for 50 years, Mr. Vik moved to Sullivan County where he worked at the Concord Hotel and the Forestburgh Country Store. A volunteer with voting, he was an active participant in the Forestburgh Senior Citizens Club, a past president of the Sons of Norway and a member of the Superintendents Building Guild.
Mr. Vik is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary Vik of Landing, N.J., and Lester and Anne Vik of North Bellmore; a daughter, Eleanor Caine of Wantage, N.J.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Services will be held at noon at the funeral home on Saturday with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Esther E. Gockel
LPN/Beautician, 77
Esther Ellen Gockel of Lew Beach, a homemaker, licensed practical nurse, a beautician, and a lifetime area resident, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at her home. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late Mason and Nellie Deyoe Banks, she was born February 12, 1926, in Lew Beach. She was the widow of Francis Gockel who died March 2, 1972.
Mrs. Gockel was a member of the former Ladies Auxiliary of the Livingston Manor Memorial Post #6081, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Beaverkill Valley Fire Department, the Lew Beach Community Church and the Livingston Manor Senior Citizens.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Maxine and Rick Porter of Prattsville, Nancy Marks of Liberty and Bonnie and Sidney Westcott of Sherburne; a brother, Edward Banks of Lew Beach; a sister-in-law, Maggie Banks of White Sulphur Springs; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Flora Jersey, and a brother, Pete Banks.
Friends may call at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Craig Saunders officiating.
Burial will be made in the Lew Beach Cemetery.

Murray Sisselman
Ret. Teacher, 73
Murray Sisselman of Miami, Fla., a former resident of Parksville and a retired president of the United Teachers of Dade Union in Florida, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, in Aventura, Fla., after a battle with cancer. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Fred and Sadie Korman Sisselman, he was born January 10, 1930, in New York City.
He grew up in Parksville where he was a member of the Parksville Synagogue. He moved to South Florida after serving in the United States Army in Japan during the Korean War. Mr. Sisselman started his teaching career in 1956 at the Westview Middle School. He was active in county affairs, served on the zoning appeals board for 14 years and was a past chairman of the board. His vision of building a complex for teachers was finally realized through his tireless work and perseverance in November of 2001. The complex has an auditorium, offices, and a Montessori lab school run by Barry University School of Education for children of teachers, UTD employees and school district personnel.
Mr. Sisselman was a graduate of Liberty High School. He was a member of the Liberty Elks Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Free and Accepted Masons.
He is survived by his wife, Ludmila Sisselman, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Elisabet Sisselman of Miami, Fla., and Jagger and Angela Hardy of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Helen Sisselman of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; a sister, Frances Katz, and her husband, Jack, of Middletown; a brother, Irving Sisselman and his wife, Gladys of Rockaway, N.J; two grandchildren, Sarah and Lina; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Graveside services and burial will be held Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Parksville Synagogue Cemetery in Parksville.

Evelyn K. Hatton, a lifelong resident of Youngsville, a retired bus driver for the Milton Gaebel Bus Company in Youngsville and a stock clerk at Eddie's Market in Jeffersonville, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at her home. She was 70 years of age.
The daughter of the late W alter and Wilhelmina Wood, she was born October 29, 1932, in Youngsville.
Mrs. Hatton was a member of the Youngsville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, William Hatton, at home; a son, William Hatton Jr. of Bethel; three daughters, LuAnn Youmans, Karen Welau and June Hatton, all of Youngsville; seven grandchildren, William Hatton, Eric, Jessica and Brett Youmans, and Stephanie, Sara and Melanie Werlau; two brothers, Walter Wood and his wife, Nora, of the state of Florida, and Roy Wood of Youngsville; a sister, Elsie Parks and her husband, Les, of Youngsville; and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation was made at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

George Eden Jr.
Ret. Painter, 73
George A. Eden Jr. of Damascus, Pa., a retired painter and a 60-year area resident, died Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 73 years of age.
The son of George A. Sr. and Mabel Eden, he was born June 23, 1929, in New York City.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Delaware Lodge #561, F.&A.M., in Callicoon, and a member of the American Legion. He was also a talented furniture restorer.
Mr. Eden is survived by his wife, Marilyn Wall Eden, at home; two children, Lillian Ferber of Callicoon and Robert Eden of Damascus, Pa.; a sister, Doris Eden of Damascus, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were held Monday at the Hillside Cemetery in Damascus, Pa., with the Rev. George Gallandorn officiating.
