Ret. Hotelman, 78
Francis "Frank" V. Winski Sr. of Bethel, a former co-owner of the Valley View House in Kenoza Lake and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late Paul and Antoinette Zapolska Winski, he was born August 2, 1924, in Brooklyn.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Winski was a member of the H. Russell Kenyon Post No. 5808, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Callicoon, and St. George's Church in Jeffersonville. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and a former member of the Jeffersonville Lions Club.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He lived life to the fullest and anyone who knew him will never forget him."
He is survived by his wife, Casimira Bekarciak Winski, at home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Glenn Spielmann of Youngsville, Alicia and Edward Skelly of Poulsbo, Wash., and Pamela and Andrew Borek of Hillsborough, N.J; two sons and daughters-in-law, Francis V. Jr. and Katherine Winski of Goshen and Joseph and Mary Winski of Youngsville; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Tuesday and Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville with Father Paul Osborne, O.F.M., officiating.
Burial will be made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.

Robert M. Rosen
Monti Attorney, 64
Robert M. Rosen of Rock Hill, a prominent attorney in Sullivan County, died Monday, March 24, 2003, after a long and heroic battle with brain cancer. He was 64 years of age.
The son of the late George H. and Rose S. Rosen, he was born May 3, 1938, in Monticello.
A graduate of Monticello High School, Syracuse University and the Syracuse University College of Law, he was an editor of the Syracuse Law Review while in college. He earned his Master's of Law degree from New York University.
He joined his parents in the law firm of Rosen & Rosen in Monticello and then partnered with his brother, William, in the firm of Rosen Law Offices. In between, he was a partner in the law firm of Kesten, Gerstman, Ledina, Rosen and Drew.
Mr. Rosen had served as an intern for the New York County District Attorney's office, as Assistant Sullivan County Attorney, and as an attorney for the Village of Monticello. He was also the Town of Thompson and Town of Bethel attorney and was Sullivan County's first-ever public defender. Mr. Rosen was also counsel to the Urban Renewal Agency and to the Monticello Industrial Development Agency.
He was a member of the American, New York and Sullivan County Bar Associations and had been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Rosen was a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the New York State Public Defenders Association. He had also served as a president of the Sullivan County Bar Association.
Mr. Rosen was an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty during the 1968 USS Pueblo crisis.
A member and former president of the Monticello Rotary Club, he was responsible for the club's incorporation and the incorporation of the organization's scholarship fund. He was a member and former president of the Rock Hill Business and Community Association; a board member of the New York State United Way and served as co-chairman with his wife, Nathana, of the Sullivan County United Way's Pro-Am Golf Tournament for the past 11 years. He and his wife were also co-chairmen of the American Cancer Society's Jail and Bail event in Sullivan County.
Very much involved in organizations, he was also a member of the Board of Visitors of the Syracuse University College of Law, a trustee of Sullivan County Community College and a member of the Board of Directors and vice chairman of the Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development. He was a member of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce and the Sullivan County Community College Foundation Board of Trustees. He and his wife were honored as the first recipients of the Sullivan County Partnership's Walter A. Rhulen Award for Business, Community and Humanity Achievement and in 2001, he was named as the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce's Man of the Year.
An avid golfer, Mr. Rosen was also a 30-year member and former director of the Orange County Golf Club and a board member of the Holiday Mountain Ski Club.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nathana Mintz Rosen, at home; three sons, Erik, Jeremiah and Lucas; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Lois Rosen; a brother-in-law, Ward Mintz, and partner Floyd Lattin; a niece; a nephew; and many cousins.
A remembrance of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Bernie's Holiday Restaurant in Rock Hill.

Marie A. Soete
Homemaker, 78
Marie A. Soete of Honesdale, Pa., a homemaker, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa., after a brief illness and battle with cancer. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Albert and Martha Bell Allenbacher, she was born May 28, 1924, in Honesdale, Pa. She was the widow of Bernard H. Soete who died July 23, 1954, after six years of marriage.
Mrs. Soete was a 1942 graduate of Honesdale High School and worked as a bookkeeper for over 11 years at the Honesdale Consolidated Water Company, during the 1970s and 1980s. She was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Honesdale and an active 51-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
In a family statement, it was said, "Despite life's many tribulations, she always had a bright outlook, pleasant smile and hearty laugh. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all." Mrs. Soete liked shopping at Day's Bakery and Art's for Him and Her, bargains, garage sales, eating out weekly with the girls, getting her hair done, cooking, gardening, watching backyard wildlife, reading area newspapers from cover to cover, and visiting. She knew more local names, faces and ancestry than anyone else could ever hope to remember.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda McCauley of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, David Soete of Honesdale, Pa.; two sisters, Helen Tenbus and Ann Parker and her husband, John, all of Honesdale, Pa.; three grandchildren, Catherine, Karen and Mark McCauley of California; a sister-in-law, Rita Soete of Honesdale, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale, Pa., on Thursday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale.
Interment was made in St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Honesdale, Pa.

Clarence Gowdey
Ret. Asst. Cashier, 98
Clarence W. Gowdey of Bloomingburg and Clearwater, Fla., a retired assistant cashier for the Pine Bush branch office of the Bank of New York and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at the Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fla. He was 98 years of age.
The son of the late James C. and Addie Whitlock Gowdey, he was born January 15, 1905, in Bloomingburg. He was the widower of Lura Lamb Gowdey.
A former member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Bloomingburg, he was a member and a past 28-year treasurer of Hoffman Lodge #412, Free and Accepted Masons, in Middletown; a member of Valley of Middletown No. 117 Lodge of Perfection; the Council, Chapter and Consistory of the Valley of Binghamton, A.A.S.R. and the shriners of Cyprus Temple in Albany. Mr. Gowdey was also a member and past president of the Middletown Lions Club, a past master of the Bloomingburg Grange #1167, a past master and treasurer of the Sullivan County Pomona Grange #52; a past president of the Orange County Banker's Association; a member of the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery Board of Directors; a past president of the Bloomingburg School Board of Education; and a former treasurer for Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council.
He is survived by a son, Peter W. Gowdey of Washington, D. C.; a daughter, Donna Lou Tuthill of Palmdale, Calif.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Bloomingburg Restoration Foundation Museum and Cultural Center, High St., Bloomingburg with the Rev. Betty Beach officiating.
Interment will be made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

Homemaker, 95
Jane M. Conway of Wurtsboro Hills, a homemaker, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 95 years of age.
The daughter of the late John Michael and Bridget Dunn Kiernan, she was born June 10, 1907, in Manhattan. She was the widow of Francis Joseph Conway.
Mrs. Conway was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro.
She is survived by a son, Francis Joseph Conway Jr. of Hammondsport; a dear friend, Sandy Mulholland; a daughter-in-law, Muriel Conway of Pulteney; a niece, Claire T. Cirone of Wurtsboro Hills; three grandchildren, Bridget, William and Francis Joseph; and several great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered Thursday at St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro with the Rev. Peter Madori officiating.
Burial was private.

Ret. Knife Insp., 73
Alberta J. Caruso of Ellenville, a retired knife inspector for Imperial Schrade in Ellenville and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Chauncey James and Florence Hill Cooke, she was born April 9, 1929, in Monticello. She was the widow of Joseph Caruso who died May 15, 1995.
She is survived by three sons, Joseph Caruso of Ellenville, Paul Caruso of Woodbourne and Chauncey Caruso of Ellenville; a daughter, Julia Caruso of Ellenville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandsons; a brother, Chauncey "Cricket" Cooke of Accord; three sisters, Jeanette Caruso of Pennsylvania, Frances Fiebelkorn of Accord and Eleanor Davis of the state of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Loucks Funeral Home, Route 209, Ellenville, with the Rev. Jay Vogelaar officiating.
Burial will be made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Retired Inspector, 89
Maria Reszka of Cochecton died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at her home. She was 89.
The daughter of Jozef and Wiktoria Romanowska Ogonek, she was born November 25, 1917 in Poland.
She was a retired Quality Control Inspector for Equitable, Long Island, and a member of Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church, Lake Huntington. She was a past member of the Altar and Rosary Society, Sunshine Club, Catskill Art Society, Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, National Museum Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., Senior Art Program with Bob Pointer, where she received an Artist of the Year Award, plus numerous awards for her paintings.
A family statement reads, “Maria was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who loved to paint beautiful paintings.”
She is survived by her daughter, Christina Chmura; six grandchildren, Andrew Chmura, Denise Daub, Joane Wozniak, Maria Trapani, Christine Wozniak, Shean Maysonet; nine great-grandchildren, Victor Jacek Chmura, Kevin Chmura, Amberly Chmura, Veronica Daub, Ann Marie Trapani, Gus Trapani, Michael Trapani, Monica Wozniak, Gus Wozniak; and two nieces, Hania and Wiesia Rosolek. She was predeceased by two children, Bogdan Wozniak and Jacek Wozniak.
Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 26 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Narrowsburg. The Rev. William Scully, OFM, will officiate.
Burial will be made in Laurel Cemetery, Cochecton Center.

Ret. Cook, 84
Katherine "Kitty" H. Daley of Woodbourne, a retired cook for Fallsburg Central School, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2007 at Catskill Regional Medical Center. She was 84.
The daughter of Oliver and Hildegarde Lindstrand Moshier, she was born February 3, 1922 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of William Daley.
Survivors include one son William Daley III of Connecticut and Florida; two daughters, Katherine D. Rowe and her husband, William III of Peru, N.Y. and Carol A. Daley of Bloomingburg; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers, Oliver Moshier of Beacon and Merton Moshier of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mary DiBlasi of Hudson and Beatrice Snyder of Roscoe.
She was predeceased by one brother, Leonard Moshier.
Visitation was held Wednesday, January 24 with a funeral service at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne. The Rev. Kenneth Wonderland officiated.
Interment followed in the Hillside Cemetery Woodbourne.
