Betty Kadan, 93
Beerkill Lodge Owner

Betty Kadan, former owner of the Beerkill Lodge in Greenfield Park and longtime area resident, died Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 93.
The daughter of the late Sender and Leah Albert, she was born February 12, 1912 in Minsk, Russia.
She was the widow of Jack Kadan.
Betty immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1922. To most she was a quiet woman, but to those who knew her, she was the most kind, giving and caring individual. She always put others' needs before her own. Her strength and will to live were an inspiration to all.
Survivors include her son, Alvin Kadan of Woodbourne; grandchildren, Janice Kadan also of Woodbourne, Steven and his wife, Diana of Mountaindale and Jeffrey Kadan; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Jaxon Kadan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sons, Bertram and Seymour Kadan; brothers, Hy, Saul, Izzy, and Harry Albert; and sister, Ruth Reif.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 4, at Ezrath Israel Synagogue in Ellenville. Moshe Frank officiated.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home.

Olga H. Finegan
Ret. Asst. Dietician, 86

Olga H. Finegan of Clifton, NJ died at home on September 29, 2004. She was 86.
The daughter of the late Mary Sebasta Nikisch and John Nikisch, she was born on April 6, 1918 in New Brighton, PA. She was the widow of Peter Finegan.
She was a resident of Clifton most of her life where she retired as an assistant dietician for Daughters of Miriam Nursing Home.
Survivors include a son, Michael Finegan of Clifton; a daughter, Mary Ellen Rodgers of Long Eddy; two grandchildren, Eve Hughes and Kathy Ellen Rodgers and one great-grandchild.
Funeral arrangements were made by Stewart-Murphy Funeral Services with internment at Callicoon Cemetery on October 1 in a private service.

Edith R. Burns
Musician, 66

Edith R. "Dede" Burns of Santa Ana, Calif., a former resident of South Fallsburg, died on September 15, 2002, in Orange, Calif. She was 66 years of age.
The daughter of Marion Sakofsky and the late Judge Herbert Sakofsky, she was born October 12, 1935, in South Fallsburg.
A graduate of Fallsburg Central High School and the University of Michigan, she was an accomplished musician. She was a member of the Irvine Valley College Choir with whom she performed John Rutter's "Requiem," conducted by the composer at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Mrs. Burns also sang with the chorus which performed at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and more recently as a member of the University Synagogue Choir in Orange, Calif.
An avid supporter of the arts and public televison, Dede was also associated with the Martin Lawrence Gallery in Santa Ana. She also served as career center counselor at Foot Hills High School and as an eligibility advisor at the Orange County Social Services Division, all in California.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Burns, at home; four children and their spouses, Linda and Gene Campana, Marianne and Peter Hauser, Jennifer and Nick Hartog and David and Rosa Burns; 11 grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen and Guy Carrier and Elaine and Jerry Alexander; an aunt, Lila Hillman of Florida, formerly of Hurleyville; an uncle, Harold Shapiro of Denver, Colo.; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eileen and Harvey Krieger of Woodridge and Leda and Richard Burns of Florida; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of friends.
Services and burial were held at the Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach, Fla., with Rabbi Arnold Rachlis officiating.

Jean B. Tag
Homemaker, 74

Jean Blair Tag of Jeffersonville, a homemaker, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, while visiting relatives in De Bary, Fla., at the Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City. She was 74 years of age.
The widow of Walter Blair to whom she was married 30 years, Mrs. Tag was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jeffersonville and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed a variety of craft making, traveling, gardening and loved to play golf.
She is survived by two brothers, W.T. Blair of De Bary Fla., James Blair of Orleans, Mass.; two sisters, Ella Elizabeth Mathews of Lake Luzerne and Jane Carnell of Haines City, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at a later date in Pleasantville.
Interment will be made at the Kensico Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.

Robert W. DeGroot
Bus Driver, 70

Robert W. DeGroot of Ferndale, a bus driver for the Liberty Central School District and the Gershowitz Bus Company in Liberty and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Roland and Ruth Fraser DeGroot, he was born May 18, 1932, in Monticello.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a life member of the Clarence Hoyt Post No. 9217, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Liberty and a member of the Liberty Elks Lodge #1545. Mr. DeGroot was a former member of the Swan Lake Fire Company in Swan Lake and a former member of the Corp. Russell D. Sprague Post #109 of the American Legion in Liberty.
He is survived by his wife, Madelin "Maggie" Tierney DeGroot, at home; a daughter, Edithann DeGroot, at home; a sister-in-law, Helen DeGroot of White Sulphur Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday at the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Richard Gabriel officiating.
Burial with military honors was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Dr. Evelyn B. Franz
Teacher, 94

Dr. Evelyn B. Franz of New Jersey, formerly of Newburgh, died Monday, August 27, at Capital Health Systems Mercer Campus at the age of 94.
She was born in Newburgh, the daughter of Arthur and Mary Mack Birdsall. She was the widow of Henry P. Franz who died in January 1992.
Dr. Franz is survived by her son, Conrad J. Franz, who lived with her; her sister, Joyce Sherman of Beacon; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Birdsall of Spring Hill, Fla.; six nieces, six grandnieces; nine nephews; seven grandnephews; and one great-grandnephew.
Dr. Franz graduated from the New Paltz Normal School; now known as the State University of New York at New Paltz, in New Paltz. She received a New York State Diploma from the Normal School in 1935. She graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University with a major in Elementary Education in 1939. In 1944, Dr. Franz graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University with a Master of Arts Degree in Teacher Education. She received a Doctorate of Education with emphasis in curriculum and supervision from Rutgers, the State University in 1958. Dr. Franz also attended seminars in Linguistics under the direction of Dr. Henry Lee Smith, Jr. She also held a Reading Specialist Certificate.
Upon graduation from New Paltz Normal School, she was employed as a teacher in a one room rural school in Pleasant Valley, N.Y. for two years, and was then employed for one year as a teacher in another one room rural school in Rock Hill. It was at this time she was invited to join the elementary school faculty in Monticello where she taught for six years.
In 1944, following her graduation from Teachers College, Columbia University, she was invited to become Instructor, serving as a demonstration teacher at the Lanning School for Trenton State College. She taught there for ten years and was transferred from Lanning to the Trenton State College campus, now the College of New Jersey. She was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1953, to Associate Professor in 1957, and to full Professor in 1961.
Dr. Franz served in different capacities as an instructor at the college, as Elementary Education Coordinator, Chairperson for the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and Supervisor of the Graduate Developmental Reading Program.
Dr. Franz was involved in several professional activities. She was a member of the National Education Association and the New Jersey Education Association.
Dr. Franz served as consultant and speaker on reading and language arts and gave demonstration lessons for public schools, and at state and national conventions. She served as a consultant for the K-12 Reading Curriculum for the City of Trenton, and as a consultant to the State of New Jersey Department of Higher Education, Office of Student Assistance.
Dr. Franz was a charter member and the first President of the Tri-County Reading Association; she was President, past President and Board Member of the New Jersey Reading Association for several years, and she was also a member of the International Reading Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honor society for outstanding women in education.
She also served as President, past President and Co-Counselor of the Greater Trenton Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. After retirement from the Board, she was named Co-Counselor Emerita of the Society.
Dr. Franz was a member, President, and past President of the Soroptimist International of Trenton; a member of the Trenton Torch Club; a member of the Contemporary Club of Trenton; and a charter member of the Boheme Opera Guild. She was also a member of People to People International and Greater Trenton Chapter, where she served as a member of the Board and served as its secretary for several years.
Upon retirement, a room in Forcina Hall was named the Dr. Evelyn B. Franz Graduate Reading Resource Room in her honor. She was named Professor Emerita of Education of Trenton State College, now the College of New Jersey. After retirement Dr. Franz spent much of her time traveling to Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. She was also an avid reader of fiction who exchanged books with numerous neighbors, colleagues, and family who shared her passion for reading.
Dr. Franz earned recognition in numerous publications including Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who of American Women, and the Dictionary of International Biography.
Dr. Franz was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing, and served as a deacon.
Memorial Services will be held at the Pennington Presbyterian Church, 13 South Main Street, Pennington, N.J. on Saturday, September 15, at noon, under the direction of Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Rd, Pennington, N.J. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Vandergrift, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing will officiate.
Burial will be made in the Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Walden at the family’s convenience.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Evelyn B. Franz’s memory to either the College of New Jersey Foundation for the Evelyn B. Franz Scholarship Fund, PO Box 7718, Ewing, NJ 08628 or the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing, 100 Scotch Rd., Ewing, NJ 08628.

Edith S. Jackson
Teacher, 100

Edith S. Jackson of Narrowsburg, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2007. She was 100 years of age.
The daughter of Herman and Josephine Scott, she was born December 31, 1906 in New Haven, Conn., where she lived until graduating college to become a school teacher.
She married Edwin Jackson and they made their home in Great Neck, Long Island, where they raised two sons, Edwin and Scott.
After her first husband’s death, she later married Walter Roesler and they resided in Great Neck as well. Upon his death, she resumed work again at the Great Neck Park District and retired from there at the age of 88.
She sadly lost her son, Scott, 21 years ago in California.
She was an amazing woman, loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her throughout her hundred plus years here in this life.
Survivors include her son, Edwin Jackson and his wife, Chris; her sister, Mildred; four grandchildren, Stacey, Elisa, Dianne and Rebecca; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Lisa and Jackson; as well as two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kenny.
She was one of five children, predeceased by two sisters and one brother.
There will be no visitation.
A graveside service was held August 30 at All Saint’s Cemetery in Great Neck, Long Island.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
Her family is immensely grateful for the wonderful, loving care hospice gave her in this past year.
Arrangements were made under the direction of Rasmussen’s Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.

Ralph J. Pinckney Sr.
Ret. Union Worker, 84

Ralph J. Pinckney Sr. of Parksville passed away peacefully at home on August 28, 2007. He was 84.
He was born on September 15, 1922 in Eldred.
He served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He retired from Local #445 and was a member of the Sheep Hill Rod and Gun Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Melody Durso and her husband, Michael, of Ellenville and Barbara Villanueva of San Jacento, Calif.; companion, Edie Houghtaling of Loch Sheldrake; one daughter-in-law, Therese Pinckney of Grahamsville; seven grandchildren, Michele Deni, Melonie Pratti, Terry Greenspan, Robin Lois, Jim Cole, Cindy Riback, and Nicole Mahnken; and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace; one daughter, Susie Cole; and two sons, Ralph Pinckney Jr. and Robert Pinckney.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 31 at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery in Grahamsville.
Arrangements were under the direction of Colonial Memorial Funeral Home.
