Martin W. Schneider
Ret. NYC Fireman, 94

Martin W. Schneider, a 25-year resident of Hurleyville and a retired New York City fireman, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at the Achieve Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home in Liberty. He was 94 years of age.
He was the widower of Edna "Sweetheart" Schneider who died in 1993.
Mr. Schneider was a retired fireman from Engine Company 319 in Middle Village, Queens. He was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and St. Paul's Senior Citizens, both in Liberty, a member and a past president of AARP in Grahamsville, and a very active volunteer for the Sullivan County Office for the Aging.
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Schneider of Kings Park, Thomas and Alberta Schneider of Parksville, Martin and Virginia Schneider of Hicksville, and Paul and Lauri Schneider of York; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Arthur Clark of East Northport and Carol and Paul Schurlein of Trumbull, Conn.; two brothers, George Schneider and Charles Schneider, both of Lynbrook; a sister, Teresa Elbert of Miller Place; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and William; four sisters, Kathleen Supino, Madeline Colao, Henrietta Hack and Marie Moran; and two grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 264 North Main St., Liberty, with Msgr. Edward Straub officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of St. Peter's Church, 264 North Main St., Liberty, N.Y. 12754.

John T. Verderber
Ret. Attendant, 73

John Theodore Verderber of Damascus, Pa, a retired attendant for the Psychiatric Development School in Wassaic and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at the Frankford-Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., following a lengthy illness. He was 73 years of age.
The son of Doris Whitehead Verderber and the late Joseph Verderber Sr., he was born August 29, 1929, in Bayshore.
Mr. Verderber was a member and lay speaker of the Hankins United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his mother, at home; a brother, Joseph Verderber Jr. of Damascus, Pa.; two sisters, Joan Ellie Sattler of Hortonville and Marilyn Meyer of Damascus, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Verderber, and a sister, Anna Turk.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jack Polin officiating.
Burial will be made in the Callicoon Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hankins United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 44, Hankins, N.Y. 12741.

Edward C. Gregory
Ret. Purchasing Agt., 85

Edward C. Gregory of Liberty, a retired purchasing agent for the S.A. Healy Co. in Chicago, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at the Achieve Rehabilitation Center in Liberty. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Edward C. and Mary Giblon Gregory, he was born January 22, 1918, in Port Chester.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in both World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the Clarence Hoyt Post No. 9217, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Liberty. Mr. Gregory was also a member of St. Peter's Church and the Liberty Elks Lodge #1545, both in Liberty and the White Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Daisy L. Wilber Gregory at home; a daughter, Dolores Reynolds of Callicoon; two grandchildren, Russell and Daisy; a brother, William Gregory of Port Chester; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.

Celia M. Dill, 96
Ret. Businesswoman

Celia M. Dill of Woodbourne, the retired proprietor along with her late husband of Dill's Hardware for 50 years and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at St. Teresa's Nursing Home in Middletown. She was 96 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Rose Slaver Hartman, she was born April 27, 1907, in Woodbourne. She was the widow of Harry A. Dill who died June 19, 1985.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Dill was an original dispatcher for the Woodbourne Fire Company who physically rang the bell that is now located in front of the funeral home. She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a CCD teacher and a member of the Rosary Guild. She was also the Sullivan County hostess at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Roe Dill of Syracuse, Thomas and Joan Dill of Gladstone, N.J., and Robert and Betsy Dill of Boston, Mass.; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gilbert Welch of Woodbourne; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Fenn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 42, Woodbourne.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326-1394 or to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 42, Woodbourne, N.Y. 12788.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

A memorial service for Sylvia Herwig of Livingston Manor, who died March 2, 2003, will be held on Monday, April 28, at 11:30 a.m., at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor.

Elspeth S. Swain
Homemaker, 83

Elspeth S. Swain, a one-year resident of Wurtsboro, and a former resident of Nyack and Indian Town, Fla., died Saturday, April 19, 2003. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Hubert and Elsie Smith, she was born March 28, 1920, in Nyack. She was the widow of Herbert Swain who died in 2000.
Mrs. Swain is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert A. and Dorothy B. Swain; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol S. and Bruce G. Saunders and Julia E. and Thomas L. Sundell; four grandchildren, Katherine, Stephanie, Adriana and Thomas Sundell; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn E. and Dr. Leo Weishaar Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack.
Burial will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, P.O. Box 3950, San Rafael, Calif. 94912-3950.

Mae Hummel
Homemaker, 79

Mae Hummel of Wurtsboro, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at the Horton Campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Wesley and Lucinda Whitman Hummel, she was born November 15, 1923, in Yankee Lake.
She is survived by a brother, Wesley Hummel of Wurtsboro, and a sister, Cora VanKleeck of Wurtsboro Hills. She was predeceased by a brother, George Hummel.
Services were held Thursday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro with Wesley Cook officiating.
Burial was made in the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.

Harold Mansheffer
Ret. Ford Worker, 73

Harold L. Mansheffer of Bloomingburg, a retired auto worker for Ford Motor Plant in Mahwah, N.J., died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Roy and Mabel Mansheffer, he was born July 26, 1929, in Cobleskill.
Mr. Mansheffer was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by two sons, Leo Mansheffer of Bloomingburg and James Mansheffer of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Linda Davis of Greenville; two brothers, Dave and Chuck Mansheffer, both of Margaretville; a sister, Dee Kipp of Stamford; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Donovan Funeral Home, 82 South Church St., Goshen, with the Rev. David Kingsley officiating.
Interment will be made in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery.

Milton Bernstein
Retired, 82

Milton Bernstein of Loch Sheldrake died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Nathan and Fannie Clifton Bernstein, he was born May 12, 1916, in Rochester.
Retired, Mr. Bernstein was attending the Living Arts Center on the campus of New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake.
Staff members at New Hope Community said, "We at 410 Larry's Way remember a man of simple pleasures. He loved celebrating all that life had to offer. All of the Jewish holidays held great meaning for him. He made us remember the importance of faith as he would recite prayers from the Torah with passion and tradition. . . His love of a good meal as he would assist in the kitchen, a day wouldn't be complete without Milton checking the menu for his favorite 'sausage and peppers' or helping to shop for Kosher foods. . . His love of the Living Art Center and the anticipation of family (staff) arrival each day to plan a favorite event. His smile and his lessons of simple pleasures will truly be missed."
He is survived by many close friends and family.
Graveside services and burial will be held Sunday at Congregation B'nai Israel Cemetery in Glen Wild with Rabbi Isaac Gottlieb officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
