Max Brender, 94
Ret. Poultry Farmer

Max M. Brender of Boca Raton, Fla., a former longtime resident of Ferndale and a retired poultry farmer, died Saturday, June 20, 2003, in Florida. He was 94 years of age.
The son of the late Sam and Rose Brender, he was born October 21, 1908, in New York City. He was the widower of Beatrice Brender.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Liberty.
Mr. Brender is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Orly Brender of Israel; a son-in-law, Morton Baum of Monticello; a sister, Ruth Bayes of N.J.; five grandchildren, Richard Baum and his wife Elisa, Jonathan Baum and his wife, Amanda, Elizabeth Baum and her husband, Adam Glatt, Joel Brender and Avagial Brender; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Rachel Glatt. He was predeceased by a son, Joel Brender, and a daughter, Hazel Baum.
Services will be held at noon on Tuesday at Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue, Chestnut St., Liberty, with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.
Burial will be made in Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty.
Local arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Rose Katz, 84
Ret. Teacher's Aide

Rose Katz of Liberty, a retired elementary school teacher's aide in the Liberty Central School and a longtime area resident, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Tallahassee, Fla. She was 84 years of age.
The daughter of the late Zelig and Yetta Yevelsono Newmark, she was born August 5, 1918, in Los Angeles, California. She was the widow of Julius Katz who died in 1988.
Mrs. Katz is survived by a son, Brian Katz of Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Geraldine Katz of New York City and Linda Katz of Annapolis, Md.; and two grandsons.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday at the Ferndale Synagogue Cemetery in Parksville with Rabbi Stephen Friedman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Fla. 32308 or a Hospice of one's choice.

William Jones
Ret. Farmer, 81

William Jones of Westbrookville, a retired farmer in Otisville and Warwick, a retired courier for Chase Manhattan Bank in Monroe and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Park Manor in Middletown. He was 81 years of age.
The son of the late William E. and Edna Matson Jones, he was born April 16, 1922, in Sac City, Iowa.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Westbrookville United Methodist Church, a 4-H leader for the Mt. Hope Mountaineers, and a member of the Otisville Sportsman Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, La-Vera Stephens Jones, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, William E. and Patti Jones of Middletown, Gary W. and Linda Jones of Muncy, Pa., and Stephen R. and Cheryl Jones of Franklinton, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Ashworth of Westbrookville; seven grandchildren, Julie Holmes, Jill Ashworth, Gregory Jones, William E. Jones Jr., Nicholette Jones, Kevin Jones and Rachael Jones; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Faye Jones, a sister, Elizabeth Jones Stevens, and two brothers, Willard M. Jones and Kenneth Jones.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Westbrookville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven Phillips officiating.
Burial will be made in the Westbrookville Cemetery.

Elizabeth J. Peters
Ret. Bookkeeper, 80

Elizabeth J. Peters of Port Jervis, a retired bookkeeper for Gristede Bros. in New York City and a longtime area resident, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at the Campbell Hall Nursing Home. She was 80 years of age.
The daughter of the late William J. and Loretta Cooroy Anderson, she was born June 17, 1923, in New York City. She was the widow of Eugene J. Peters.
Mrs. Peters is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Thomas Card of Port Jervis and Christine and Bumpy Westfall of Glen Spey; five grandchildren, Joshua, Michelle and Danielle Card and Amanda and Gabrielle Westfall. She was predeceased by a daughter, Eugenie Peters.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, with the Rev. David DeSimone officiaitng.
Interment will be private.

Eugene F. Hughes
Raleigh Employee, 71

Eugene Francis Hughes of Monticello, a retired professor at Holy Trinity University and a longtime employee of the Raleigh Resort, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Nursing Home in Castle Point. He was 71 years of age.
He was born April 18, 1932, in Brooklyn.
An avid reader, Mr. Hughes collected books and loved dogs.
He is survived by four sons; a daughter; several grandchildren; and a longtime friend, Karen Fortunato of Thompsonville.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Helen M. Larsen
Homemaker, 70

Helen Mae Larsen of Pine Bush, a former resident of Beverly Hills, Fla., and a homemaker, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown. She was 70 years of age.
The daughter of Edson and Martha Rogers White, she was born August 4, 1932, in the Town of Crawford. She was the widow of James Vincent Larsen.
In a family statement, it was said, "Helen was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Helen will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her."
Mrs. Larsen is survived by her mother of Walker Valley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Joseph Irber of Bloomingburg, and Nancy and David Depew of Pine Bush; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Regina Larsen of Allentown, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason, Heather, Sarah, Jimmy, Jillian, Vincent and Anthony; a great-grandchild, Alexander; two brothers, and sisters-in-law, Alfred and Charolette White of Virginia and C. Samuel and Florence White of Virginia; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Clifford Youngblood of the state of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Carolee Union.
Friends may call at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Private graveside services and burial will be held at the Brick Reformed Church Cemetery in Montgomery.

Adele M. McDowall
Spec. Ed. Aide, 66

Adele M. McDowall of Harris, a 37-year area resident and a special education teacher's aide for the Monticello Central Schools, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at her home. She was 66 years of age.
The daughter of Amelia Herb Ober and the late Ranald Ober, she was born March 5, 1937, in Darby, Pa.
Mrs. McDowall was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello, Revonah-Lincoln Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Liberty, a Grand Marshal of the Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of New York State, a past matron of the former Kiamesha Chapter, OES, in Monticello, and a member of Lucia Chapter, OES in Milford, Conn.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, James T. McDowall, at home; her mother of Portsmouth, R.I.; five sons and four daughters-in-law, James McDowall of Cantonment, Fla., Frank and Debbie Perry of Naugatuck, Conn., John and Michele McDowall of Warrington, Va., David and Terri McDowall of Andes and Robert and Lori McDowall of Forestburgh; two daughters, Tracy Murdock and her husband, James, of Fountain Inn., S.C., and Valerie Zeppelin of Neversink; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jennifer Ober of Rockport, Mass.; a sister, Sylvia Wedge of Portsmouth, R.I.; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Members of Revonah-Lincoln Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold services at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 Wednesday with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.

Alfred S. Wyckoff
Mgr. Engr. Svc., 53

Alfred Steven "Steve" Wyckoff of Bloomingburg, a manager of Engineering Services for L.P. Thebault in Parsippany, N.J., died Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the Orange Regional Medical Center/Arden Hill Campus. He was 53 years of age.
The son of the late Alfred and Carolyn MacKenzie Wyckoff, he was born August 25, 1949, in Dover, N.J.
A U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of American Legion Post 151, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 140 of Middletown and was a past commander of the Sussex County American Legion Post, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 157 in Branchville, N.J. He attended the Community Church of Wurtsboro.
He is survived by his wife, Debora Bowen Wyckoff, at home; a son, Matthew Wyckoff of Arizona; three daughters, Christina, Angela and Vanessa Phillips, at home; his mother of Budd Lake, N.J.; three sisters, Beverly Montenant of Flanders, N.J., Barbara Marshall of Sacramento, Calif., and Susan Moschgat of Clinton, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Craigville Rd., Goshen.

Rita Dugan
Homemaker, 85

Rita Dugan of Westbrookville died Thursday, June 26, 2003. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Hodge Fischback, she was the widow of Patrick Joseph Dugan.
Mrs. Dugan was active in the Mulberry House Senior Center and received the Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1991. Although her health declined, she held dear to her heart her friends, Jennie, Toni, Rose and Angie.
In a family statement, it was said, "Mom was a kind, loving person who made her family the center of her life, always giving non-judgmental advice, a true example of the Christian Faith she loved so much."
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Andrew Mikulski of Westbrookville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Patrick Michael and Karen Dugan, and Candido Melendez, all of Middletown; five grandchildren, Rita Mikulski, Meghan Henry and Kristen Mikulski, all of Westbrookville, and Lori Dugan and Brittney Dugan, both of Middletown; and a great-grandson, Ryan Distel of Westbrookville. She also leaves behind her cat, Squeeker.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R. C. Church in Middletown.
Burial was made in the Westbrookville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Orange County Mental Health Association, 20 Walker St., Goshen, N.Y. 10924 to benefit programs on autism.
