Vernon H. Beseth of Liberty, a lifelong area resident and a retired assistant Civil Engineer for the New York City Board of Water Supply, died Thursday, November 27, 2003, (the 49th wedding anniversary of he and his wife) at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Harvey John and Vilda Adelaide Sprague Beseth, he was born March 21, 1930, in Liberty.
A 1947 graduate of Liberty High School, he attended Clarkson College in Potsdam and graduated from Hartwick College in 1957 with a BA in Mathematics. Mr. Beseth served in the U. S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. He was an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a past council member and a current choir member. Mr. Beseth was a volunteer fireman of 49 years, a past president, treasurer and secretary of Liberty Hose & Truck Co. #2; and a past president of the Sullivan County Firefighters' Association.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Blake Beseth, at home; two sons, Senior Master Sergeant Paul H. Beseth and his fiancée, Cindy Degen of Newburgh, and Major William E. Beseth and his wife, Mickie of Fort Polk, La.; a daughter and son-in-law, Katye and Jim Barbehenn of Liberty; a brother, William H. Beseth of Liberty; six grandchildren, Jamie, Sean, Kimberly and Christopher Barbehenn and Dalton and Alexa Beseth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Firematic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberty Central Firehouse, 256 Sprague Ave., Liberty.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberty with the Rev. Audrey Pedersen officiating.
Cremation was private.

Edwin ‘Bud’ Hoffmann
Ret. Pharmacist, 73
Edwin G. "Bud" Hoffman of Middletown, a retired pharmacist at Arden Hill Hospital and the Orange County Infirmary, died November 30, 2003, at Middletown Park Manor. He was 73 years of age.
The son of the late Charles Joseph and Freda Feigenbutz Hoffmann, he was born January 12, 1930, in Liberty.
He spent his youth in Hankins and was a graduate of the Delaware Valley Central School in Callicoon.
Mr. Hoffmann is survived by a brother, Donald Frederick Hoffmann of Hankins; two sisters, Rita Eileen Ohman and her husband, Roy, of Equinunk, Pa. and Joe Anne Baker of Youngsville; a sister-in-law, Patricia Hoffmann of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard J. "Dick" Hoffmann.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church in Obernburg with Father Gus Richardson, OFM, and Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Obernburg.

Josephine Schoonmaker

Josephine M.S. Schoonmaker of Port Jefferson, a retired attendant at the Middletown Psychiatric Center and a former longtime area resident, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, in Port Jefferson. She was 90 years of age.
The daughter of the late Pasquale and Angelina Lodici Stellato, she was born February 13, 1913, in Port Jervis.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Nancy Levine and her husband, Jeff, of Sound Beach; a grandson, John Schoonmaker of Glen Spey; a sister, Anne; four great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Dylan Levine and Candace and Jessica Schoonmaker; and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Cottage St., Middletown.
Burial will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Middletown.
Carlys C. Baker
Homemaker, 89
Carlys Cutlip Baker of Otisville, a homemaker and a longtime resident, died Friday, November 23, 2003, at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Rev. Nevie and Mary Cutlip, she was born December 21, 1913, in Buckhannon, W. Va. She was the widow of Frederick M. Baker Sr. who died September 27, 2002, after 67 years of marriage.
Mrs. Baker was a member and past matron of Queen Esther Chapter #163, Order of the Eastern Star, in Middletown and a member of the Methodist Church. She was Miss America in 1932 in a Haverstraw Pageant.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Betsey Baker of Cold Spring, Earl and Geneva of Otisville and Frederick Jr. and Deborah Baker of Otisville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Freda and Robert Clawson of Otisville, Darlene and Gerald Allen of Ferndale and Saundra and Hans Hansen of Port Jervis; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lemarne and Charles Helder of New Jersey, Celia and Percy Hall of Staten Island and Lemony and Michael Izzo of Lake Placid, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Cutlip.
Services will be held at 10 a.m on Tuesday at the Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home, 71 W. Main St., Middletown.
Burial will be made in Mt. Plains Cemetery in Otisville.

Barbara K. Adams of Roscoe, a homemaker and an area resident for more than 50 years, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. She was 95 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Frances Whitten Johnston, she was born February 3, 1908, in Kinlough, County Leitrim, Ireland. She was the widow of John Adams.
Mrs. Adams was a member of the Roscoe Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Home Bureau in Roscoe, a member of the Delaware County Scottish Society and the Pillow Group.
In a family statement, it was said, "She sang to all, from young children to her friends in the nursing home and her beautiful voice will be remembered."
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Goetschius of Roscoe; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Patricia Adams of Garrison and James A. Adams and Julia Johnston of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Harriet Milburn of Bath, England; a brother, George Johnston of Toronto, Canada; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mabel Burnham.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Roscoe Presbyterian Church, Old Route 17, Roscoe, with the Rev. Gerald Wondra officiating.
Burial will be made in the Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe.

Wilbur Dynes of Plainfield, Ill, a former resident of Westbrookville, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at the Deerbrook Care Center in Juliet, Ill. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Wilbur and Grace Vance Dynes, he was born May 31, 1918, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the widower of Mary Brunk Dynes who died June 19, 1998.
Mr. Dynes was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a former member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Middletown.
He is survived by two sons, Jim Dynes of Clayton, Ga., and John A. and his wife, Mary Dynes, of Plainfield, Ill.; four daughters, Marilyn and Stan Babcock of Westbrookville, Patricia and Richard Albright of Bethlehem, Pa., Sally Rickli and her companion, John Holland, of Waterford, and Janice and Tom Leiper of Milford, Pa.; a brother, Ralph Dynes of California; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia J. Shields.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, with the Rev. Gary Rankin of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church officiating.
Burial will be made in the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

Michael Gregory Holbert of Swan Lake, a student at Staten Island Community College (SICC), died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 44 years of age.
The son of Joyce Theresa Knight and the late Brommio Holbert, he was born February 2, 1959, in Queens.
He is survived by a son, Douglas; his mother; two brothers, Anthony and Frank; three sisters, Gloria, Lydia and Denise; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty on Monday with the Rev. Norman Graves officiating.
Interment was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Carl Abbe, 88
Ret. Engineer
Carl Abbe of Stokesdale, N.C., a former resident of Stalker, Pa., and a retired engineer, died Monday, November 24, 2003, in North Carolina. He was 88 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Agnes Ruhrlapper Abbe, he was born March 21, 1915, in Brooklyn. He was the widower of Elsie Abbe.
Mr. Abbe was an avid model railroad enthusiast and was a member of local railroading clubs in New York and Pennsylvania.
He was a past president of the National Campers and Hikers Association, the Pfizer Photography Club and served on the Board of Commissioners in Manchester Township in Pennsylvania. He was also a past member and past president of the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens in Callicoon. After moving to North Carolina four years ago, he attended Flat Rock United Methodist Church.
Mr. Abbe is survived by two children and their spouses, Carl F. and Diane Abbe of Greensboro, N.C., and Carol A. and Salvatore Pulice of Long Island; and three grandchildren, Kenny Abbe, Kelly Abbe and Vinny Franco.
A memorial service was held Friday in Stokesdale, N.C.

Dorothy Hopkins, formerly of Bardonia and Nanuet, died November 25, 2003, in Jupiter, Fla. She was 72 years of age.
Mrs. Hopkins was affiliated with St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack, St. Charles Borromeo in Dover Plains, and St. Jude's Church in Tequesta, Fla.
She is survived by her husband, Deacon Farrell J. Hopkins, at home; two sons, Farrell Hopkins Jr. of Stony Point and Daniel P. Hopkins of Redmond, Wash.; three daughters, Dorothy Theresa Hopkins-Delfino of Monticello, Frances Lima of Hewitt, N.J., and Donna Maire Strand of Mastic; a sister, Patricia A. Wisner of Camarillo, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William, and a sister, Mary Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Francis Church in West Nyack.
Burial will be made in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
