Ret. Farmer, 76
Ralph W. Slater of Woodbourne, a former resident of Grahamsville, a retired dairy farmer and former maintenance foreman for the NYC Department of Water Resources, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late Alfred and Agnes Bell Slater, he was born May 21, 1927, in Ellenville.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the occupation forces in Germany after World War II. Mr. Slater was a life member of the Grahamsville Fire Department, a member and former president of the Sullivan County Chapter of the National Farmers Organization, a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association and a member of the Masonic Lodge #582 in Ellenville. He loved farming and his other passion was flying. He was always proud of having attained a private pilot's license in 1948.
Mr. Slater is survived by his wife, Barbara Slater, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Robin Slater of Grahamsville, two stepsons and their wives, Douglas and Jona Hamilton of Grahamsville and John and Debbie Hamilton of Monticello; a step-daughter and her husband, Ellen and Steve Salovich of Napanoch; a granddaughter, Bethany Ann Hamilton of Grahamsville; a sister, Kathryn LaHanko and her husband, Al, of Grahamsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa Lynn Horvath who died in 1991.
Friends may call at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Firematic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman officiating.
Cremation will be private.

Loretta T. Holderer
Ret. CPA, 71
Loretta T. Holderer of Mountaindale, a certified public accountant for 20 years before moving to New York State, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 71 years of age.
The daughter of the late Richard and Ida Bouigcault Hanks, she was born January 22, 1932, in Fitchburg, Mass., the seventh of ten children. She was the widow of Walter Holderer who died more than seven years ago.
She was a member of St. Peter's Church in Monticello for the past five years and was active in the choir.
Mrs. Holderer is survived by four children, Marianna Lamantka of White Lake, Vicki Carollo of LaMirada, Calif., Rosemarie Comando of Hempstead and Fred Carollo Jr. of Windsor, Conn.; two brothers, Robert Hanks and John Hanks, both of Leominster, Mass.; a sister, Sr. Agnes-Marie, SSA, of Marlboro, Mass.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Hanks, and four sisters, Lorraine Gregolle, Claire Hanks, Jean Gardner and Yvonne Mays.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Peter's Church, Broadway and Liberty St., Monticello, with Father Timothy Wiggins officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.

Irvin K. Turner
Ret. Dairy Farmer, 87
Irvin K. Turner, a longtime resident of Wantage, N.J., a dairy farmer in the Libertyville section of Wantage, retiring 30 years ago, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Frankford Township, N.J. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Ira and Susie Conklin Turner, he was born May 28, 1916, in Conklin Hill, Pa.
After his retirement, he worked at the Kymer Campground in Frankford for eight years.
Mr. Turner was a member and past chief of the Colesville Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Turner, at home; two sons, Howard Turner of Sussex, N.J., and Robert Turner of Andover, NJ.; a sister, Zaza Van Tyle of Sparrowbush; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Pinkel Funeral Home in Sussex with Pastor Janice Sutton officiating.
Burial was made in the Beemerville, N.J., Cemetery.
Charlotte E. Jones
Homemaker, 78
Charlotte Elizabeth Jones of Wurtsboro, a homemaker, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at the Arden Hill Campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Goshen. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Arthur and Mae Hutchinson Hanson, she was born September 4, 1925, in New Jersey.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who gave her entire life to her family."
She is survived by her husband, Donald W. Jones, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Sandra Jones of Wurtsboro and Donald and Jean Jones of Grand Prairie, Tex.; a sister, Mae Humphrey of Pine Bush; five grandchildren, Crystal, Christina, Amy, Jamie and Donald; five great-grandchildren, Nicole, Camie, Michael, Dakota and Richard; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro with the Rev. Robert Schwander officiating.
Burial was made in Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
Joseph Brenig
Fundraiser, 80
Joseph Brenig of Manhattan and a summer resident of Smallwood died Wednesday, November 26, 2003. He was 80 years of age.
He was born November 4, 1923, in Vienna, Austria.
When the Nazis came into power, his family fled Vienna, going to Holland and Belgium and then to France where the family was in labor camps. His parents were deported on August 10, 1942, and killed a week later upon arrival at Auschwitz. His brother was aided by the OSF, a French organization which helped save Jewish children during the war. Joseph escaped by hiding on a bus leaving the camp and subsequently hid out in southern France. Eventually, he joined the French Underground (I' Armee Secrete), then the French Army and participated in the liberation of Vallence d'Agen in 1944. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Government.
Late in 2000, Joseph learned who had aided him in southwestern France and he has had a reunion with these wartime comrades for the past three years. In May 2001, he was honored by the Mayor of Valence d'Agen and by the Senator of the region, Tarn et Garonne.
When the War of Independence began in Israel in 1948, Joseph joined the Israeli Army, serving for 10 years as a tank commander for the Israeli Defense Forces and participated in the Sinai Campaign in Israel in 1956.
Mr. Brenig came to the United States in 1961 and worked as a fund raiser for the United Jewish Appeal in New York City.
In a family statement, it was said, "He will always be remembered as a just warrior, a man of humanity and for kindness to all."
He is survived by his wife, Avril Brenig; a son, Barry; a daughter-in-law, Lori; a granddaughter, Ariana; a brother Theo and his wife, Ruth, and their family, Viviane, Daniel, Lynn and Esther; and his extended family in France.
Graveside services and burial were held Friday at the Agudas Achim Cemetery in Livingston Manor with Rabbi Irwin Goodman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Israel Defense Forces (which can be found on the Internet) or to the Holocaust Studies Program.

Yvonne Tremblay
Homemaker, 64
Yvonne Tremblay of Napanoch, a homemaker and a member of the Poodle Club in Monticello, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 64 years of age.
The daughter of the late Walter and Annie Curl Ekblom, she was born February 25, 1939, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Tremblay was also a member of the Golden Ages Seniors of Ellenville.
She is survived by her husband, Roger Tremblay of Napanoch; three brothers, Walter J. Ekblom, Harold H. Ekblom and Vernon T. Ekblom, and a sister, Sandra A. Caso, all of Kingston; 11 nieces and nephews, several grandnieces and grandnephews. She also leaves her poodle, Travis.
Services were held Saturday at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Ellenville with the Rev. Paul Ruter officiating.
Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kingston.

William McCullough
Ret. Truck Driver, 74
William C. McCullough of Milford, Pa., died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late George and Selene Goble McCullough, he was born July 4, 1929, in Burnwood.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a retired truck driver for Roadway Express in Tannersville, Pa. Mr. McCullough was a member of Teamsters Union #229 in Scranton, Pa.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Karen Mercavitch of Old Forge, Pa.; a son, William C. McCullough Jr. of Montague, N.J.; five grandchildren, Darren Fiske, Kevin McCullough, Katlin McCullough, Kortney McCullough and Jodi Lynn Sarrach; a great-granddaughter, Mikayla Fiske; and several nieces and nephews.
Services and burial were private.

John Dainack, 82
Ret. Owner of Body Shop
John Dainack of Hurleyville, the retired owner of Dainack's Body Shop in Liberty and a lifelong area resident, died on Saturday, November 29, 2003, at his home, following a long illness. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Stephen and Eva Saikievich Dainack, he was born September 8, 1921, in Simpson, Pa. He was the widower of Eilene Mae Dainack who died August 8, 2003, after 58 years of marriage.
Mr. Dainack was a 61-year member, and the second oldest living member, of the Hurleyville Fire Department where he had served as a past commissioner and a past assistant chief. He was also a charter member of the Hurleyville Relief Squad.
In a family statement, it was said, "John was the son of Russian and Polish immigrants, who came to America to escape the Bolshevik Revolution. He was kind and generous to everyone, but also very strict and set in his ways. As honest as the day is long, he was known throughout the community for his honesty and forthrightness, never afraid to speak his mind."
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Lois Dainack of Liberty, and Stephen and Denise Dainack, Roger and Mary Dainack and Bruce and Sue Dainack, all of Hurlevyille; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mark Brozik of Hurleyville; a sister, Mary Kile of Tampa, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Firematic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
