Howard T. Herring
Ret. Gen. Contr., 79

Howard T . Herring of Swan Lake, a retired self-employed general contractor and a 30-year area resident, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 79 years of age.
The son of the late Sylvester A. and Frances Hellinghausen Herring, he was born August 2, 1924, in Union City, N.J.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was a member of St. Peter's Parish in Liberty.
In a family statement, it was said, "Howard was a loving husband and father, a 'great' grandfather and a loyal friend. He will be missed beyond words."
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Toomy Herring, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Rita Herring of Starrucca, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael O'Malley of Red Bank, N.J.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert F. Herring, and two sisters, Dorothy Nolan and Eileen Kellenberger.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
Memorial contributions may be made to Orange-Sullivan Hospice, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty.

Vernon L. Eltz
Ret. Agway Mgr., 74

Vernon L. Eltz, a 25-year resident of Sherrill, a retired manager of the Canastota fertilizer plant of Agway, Inc., died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, following a brief illness. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Edward and Bessie Rolston Eltz, he was born October 29, 1929, in Tyler Hill, Pa.
Educated in Damascus schools, he served two separate enlistments with the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Eltz held various positions in the retail farm stores and served 13 years as the manager of Agway's Norwich fertilizer plant before going to Canastota. Following retirement, he operated the former Sandy Hatch Agway in North Chittenango after the death of Mr. Hatch.
Mr. Eltz was a member, head usher, former trustee and a member of the diaconate of the Oneida Baptist Church, a member of Oneida American Legion Post #169, a former member of the Oneida Moose Lodge No. 421, Loyal Order of the Moose and the Lions Club of Norwich. He was a member of the Cloverleaf Veterans Association of Brooksville, Fla., and a more than 40-year member of the Black Brook Rod and Gun Club of Forestburgh.
He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, June and Douglas Georgia of Norwich, Judy and Gene Bleecker of Oneida and Jeanne and Barry Rodgers of Atlanta, Ga.; a son and his business partner, John C. Eltz and Debra Yaro of Morris; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Beulah Smith and Evelyn Howell, both of Waymart, Pa., Alice Mae and Charles Gries of Damascus, Pa., and Bette and Fred Kimble of Brooksville, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Mabel Eltz of Pleasant Mount, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Christy (Sayko) Lamberton, Tera McIntyre Dutkiewicz, Tracy McIntyre, Jessica Shackelton, Jennifer Eltz, Alicia Eltz and Logan Eltz; a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Lamberton; and several nieces and nephews, he was predeceased by a brother, Ivan Edward Eltz.
Services were held at the Oneida Baptist Church, followed by cremation.

Julian Linzer
Ret. Printer, 85

Julian Linzer of Monticello, the retired owner and operator of Aladdin Printing in Bridgeville and a longtime area resident, died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Hospice of Tempe in Mesa, Ariz. He was 85 years of age.
He was the widower of Silvin Miller Linzer who died in July of 2001.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served as a B17 navigator, flying 35 missions at the age of 19. He was a chapter president of the Jewish War Veterans, serving more than once, and a past member of the Dokeys, the Knights of Phythias, and worked on all the newspapers in the Monticello area, setting and doing their printing.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Marc R. and Adrienne Linzer of Tempe, Ariz., and Robert and Margaret Linzer of Monticello; three granddaughters, Janine, Sara and Jessica Linzer; and a grandson, Sage Linzer.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello with Rabbi Irving Goodman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, 716 W. 168th St., New York, N.Y. 10032 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.

Rafael T. Matos
Laborer, 46

Rafael "Rafi" T. Matos of Monticello, a laborer for Upstate Pavers and Landscapers, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 46 years of age.
The son of Torres and Eulia Matos, he was born May 3, 1957, in Manhattan.
He is survived by his fiancée, Nancy LaFleche, at home; a brother, Frankie T. Matos of Wallkill; four sisters, Maricell and Marta, both of Manhattan, and Jennie and Terri, both of Puerto Rico.
Friends may call at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 Main St., Woodbourne, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Cremation will be private.

Harry Prystowski
Ret. Creamery Super, 78

Harry Prystowski of Middletown, a longtime area resident and a retired supervisor of Slate Hill Creamery, died Friday, January 30, 2004, at the Horton campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late Peter and Emelia Busco Prystowski, he was born September 6, 1925, in Jersey City, N.J.
A World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he was a member of American Legion Post No. 1266.
Mr. Prystowski is survived by his wife, Eleanor Prystowski, at home; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
Services were held Monday at the Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home in Middletown.
Burial will be made in the Bloomingburg Cemetery in the spring.

Ronald J. Murphy
Businessman, 53

Ronald J. Murphy of Ellenville, a lifelong area resident and a businessman, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at his home. He was 53 years of age.
The son of the late Ronald J. and Jean M. Hopkins Murphy, he was born June 9, 1950, in Ellenville.
He served in the United States Army Reserve.
He is survived by a son, Patrick Murphy of Middletown; a sister and brother-in-law, Terrie and Herman Gonzalez of Swan Lake; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Kevin and Catherine Murphy of Grahamsville, Gary and Kathleen Murphy of Ulster Heights, and Brian Murphy of Napanoch; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Sean Murphy.
Services and cremation were private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Celia Zelkosky
Ret. School Cook, 99

Celia Zelkosky of Middletown, a 1990 retired cook of the Bogota (N.J.) High School, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at the Park Manor Rehabilitation Center in Middletown, where she had resided since 1996. She was 99 years of age.
The daughter of the late George and Lizzie Baker Moshier, she was born March 27, 1904, in Ulster Heights. She was the widow of Edward P. Zelkosky who died in 1991 after 64 years of marriage.
In a family statement, it was said, "Grandma was a loving, kind and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for the many valuable lessons she taught us that we have used throughout our lives and her repertoire of witty sayings. She has left a lifetime of wonderful memories for her family and will be sadly missed by all of us."
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Langseder of Yankee Lake; four grandchildren, Lisa Coney and her husband, Edward, of Rock Hill, Neal Langseder and his wife, Eileen, of New Canaan, Conn., Jay Langseder of Santa Ana, Calif., and Dean Langseder and his wife, Debi, of Milton; five great-grandchildren, Daria Coney and Jackie, James, Tori and Alexa Langseder; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at the Loucks Funeral Home in Ellenville.
Burial was made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Park Manor Rehabilitation, 121 Dunning Rd., Middletown, N.Y. 10940.

Thomas Novak
Ret. Engineer, 55

Thomas Novak of Highland, a former stationary engineer at the Wallkill Correctional Facility and a Vietnam veteran, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, in Shawangunk. He was 55 years of age
The son of the late Anthony and Viola Glowatz Novak, he was born March 28, 1948, in Manhattan.
He served 20 years with the Army, two years as an active duty soldier and the rest as a member of the Army National Guard, 156th Field Artillery, 10th Mountain Division.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was a lover of animals and is survived by his cat, Milo."
Mr. Novak is survived by his wife, Phyllis Pecoraro Novak, at home; two daughters, Christina Novak of New Paltz and Nancy Novak of Highland; three sisters, Betty Devaney of Queens, Frances Felle of Queens and Florence Kramer of Westbrookville; two brothers, Gerald Novak of Queens and Steven Novak of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; and two aunts, Elizabeth Rhodes of Newburgh and Frances Wilson of Norfolk, Va. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Novak, and a sister, Anna Novak.
Services were held Sunday at the Copeland Funeral Home in New Paltz.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Road, Kingston, N.Y. 12401.

Mildred T. Johnston
Ret. Svc. Assist., 92

Mildred Travis Johnston of Bradenton, Fla., a former Liberty resident and a retired service assistant for the New York Telephone Company, having worked there 27 1/2 years, died Saturday, January 31, 2004. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Roosevelt and Lana Edwards Ray, she was born January 18, 1912. She was the widow of Harry Travis and William Johnston.
Mrs. Johnston was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a 50-year member of Revonah-Lincoln Chapter #443, Order of the Eastern Star, in Liberty, and a member of the Indian River Presbyterian Church in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
She is survived by a sister, Pearl Erts of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery at a date to be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Presbyterian Church, Liberty, N.Y. 12754 or to the charity of one's choice.
