Ret. Custodian, 76
Michael B. Reilly of Swan Lake, a longtime area resident and a retired custodian of the Pine Bush Central School District as well as a custodian at the Animal Hospital of Sullivan County in Ferndale, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 76 years of age.
The son of the late Thomas and Catherine Munnelly Reilly, he was born August 13, 1927, in New York City. He was the widower of Helen Palya Reilly who died February 23, 2002.
Mr. Reilly was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty. A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952.
Mr. Reilly is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Flora Reilly of Swan Lake; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann Reilly and Jonathan Needles of Woodside; a brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Mary Reilly of Kings Park; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Thomas Curtin of Lindenhurst; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Jack and Frank Reilly, and two sisters, Mary Anastasio and Peggy Doherty.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

Vernon J. Welsh, 92
Ret. Farmer/Landscaper
Vernon J. Welsh of Tyler Hill, Pa., a retired farmer and landscaper and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 92 years of age.
The son of the late Howard and Etta Nearing Welsh, he was born July 26, 1911, in Tyler Hill, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Welsh, at home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and George Rutledge of Brewster, Alice and Paul Orr of Beach Lake, Pa., and Peggy and Burt Clark of Brookfield, Conn.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Raymond, Russell, Clarence, Harold and Kenneth, and a sister, Mildred.
Friends may call at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg on Wednesay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Stuart Hunt officiating.
Burial will be made in the Hillside Cemetery in Damascus, Pa.

Ida Salerno
Homemaker, 83
Ida Salerno of Monticello, a homemaker, died Sunday, February 1, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 83 years of age.
The daughter of the late Conrad and Gertrude O'Flaherty Fulhaber, she was born February 22, 1920, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of James Salerno.
A former salesgirl for Lerner's Department Stores, she also worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. The family said she loved to sing in her youth.
Mrs. Salerno is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robert Huggins of Loch Sheldrake and Barbara and John Scarpa of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Alice; a brother, William Fulhaber of Brooklyn; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Arlene Hutton, and three sisters.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Carl T. Meyers of Grahamsville, a retired correctional officer at the Woodbourne Correction Facility, a 35-year carpenter for Local #964 in New City, and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Phillip and Elizabeth Burgess Meyers, he was born January 17, 1929.
Mr. Meyers was a veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Beverley Allen Meyers at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Carl and Regina Meyers of Pasadena, Calif., and Douglas H. and Catherine Meyers of Grahamsville; a granddaughter, Mia Cara Meyers; two brothers, Frederick Meyers of Walton and Robert Meyers of West Nyack; a sister, June Caley of South Hamilton, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Loucks Funeral Home, Route 209, Ellenville, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Cremation will be private.

Edward Cassidy, 78
Ret. Printer's Apprentice
Edward F. Cassidy of Grahamsville, a retired printer's apprentice for the New York Times, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late John Joseph and Ada Coll Cassidy, he was born May 22, 1925, in Brooklyn.
After his retirement from the newspaper, he worked for the Fallsburg Central School System.
Mr. Cassidy was a veteran of the United States Navy, a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne.
In a family statement, it was said, "Edward was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and caretaker. He gave joy to all and love to his family. He will be missed forever."
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marie Cassidy, at home; two sons, Edward and his wife, Judith Cassidy, of Michigan and Michael Cassidy of Grahamsville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and William Bertholf of Divine Corners, Cathy and David Oniffrey of Pound Ridge, Mary and Pravin Singh of Grahamsville and Theresa and Arnold Ackerley of Neversink; a sister, Sr. Mary Stephens (Catherine) Cassidy of Brooklyn; a brother, James Cassidy of New Jersey; and 11 grandchildren, Christopher, John, Benjamin, Nicholas, Stephanie, Patricia, Caroline, Joseph, Matthew, Emily and Joshua. He was predeceased by seven sisters, Rita, Constantina, Helen, Anna, Marie, Adeline and Jean, and a brother, John Cassidy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 52, Woodbourne, with Fr. John Lynch officiating.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty with full military honors.

John Flyntz, 87
Ret. NYC Policeman
John Flyntz of Mongaup Valley, a 26-year area resident and a retired policeman for the City of New York, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 87 years of age.
The son of the late Frank and Cecelia Bentzig Flyntz, he was born January 30, 1916, in Ridgewood, Queens. He was the widower of Elvira E. Flyntz who died March 31, 2003.
Mr. Flyntz was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Mongaup Valley. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by a brother, Joe Flyntz of Glendale; a number of nieces and nephews, including Terry, Kathy and Peggy; and a cousin, Rosemary Liburd of British Columbia, Canada.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph's Church in Mongaup Valley with the Rev. Timothy Wiggins officiating.
Burial of the cremains will be made at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty after the Mass.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 Route 55, Kauneonga Lake.

Jamie D. Shay, 29
Jamie D. Shay of Greeley, Pa., died Monday, February 2, 2004, at his home. He was 29 years of age.
The son of William and Wanda Stevens Shay, he was born August 17, 1974, in Portsmouth, Va.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was loved by all that knew him."
He is survived by his mother of Woodbourne; his father of Greeley, Pa.; a son, Nicholas Shay; a brother, Shawn Shay of Minnesota; two sisters, Leah Shay of Monticello and Corey Shay of Liberty; his maternal grandmother, Linda Kalin of Port Jervis; his paternal grandfather, Charles Shay of Matamoras, Pa.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at the Stroyan Funeral Home in Milford, Pa., on Thursday with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen officiating.
Douglas Craig Walker
VP, Scholastic, Inc., 63
Douglas Craig Walker of New York City, a vice president and senior editorial director at Scholastic Inc., lost his battle with cancer on July 1, 2007. He was 63.
He was a 1962 graduate of Raytown High School and honored in 2005 with induction into the “Alumni Hall of Fame.” He received his BA and Master’s in Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia with studies at University Redding in England. After his military service, he joined Hallmark Cards as senior editor, then was managing editor at Lar Publications. He joined Scholastic, Inc. in 1983 as assistant editor of See Saw Book Club, and his nearly 25-year legacy includes The Magic School Bus series, Goosebumps, The Babysitters Club, The Read and Learn Bible, and countless others as he left an enduring mark on the children’s book industry.
He is survived by partner Robert Paulsen; his mother, Mary Bivins of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Brian Walker (Madeline) of Kansas City, Mo., William Bivins (Eva) of Fredrick, Md.; a sister, Vanessa Stewart (Ric) of Columbus, Ohio; two nephews, Nicholas Walker and Bradley Bivins; and three nieces, Lydia and Jasmine Stewart and Brandy Bivins.
A family memorial will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 22 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 31 Erie Street, Narrowsburg.
A Scholastic, Inc. memorial in September is to be announced.
