The daughter of the late Henry G. and Ethel G. Harrington, she was born August 15, 1926, in Brooklyn.
She attended Brooklyn College where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She taught at Highland Manor Junior College in New Jersey for one year and then in Spring Valley at Pomona Junior High School for 19 years.
In a statement by her husband, it was said, "Whatever I enjoyed, she did too! When I got my pilot's license, she felt that two pilots were safer than one, and proceeded to earn her license. . . Although we sometimes had to 'sit out' bad weather on the ground, in 20 years of ownership (of a single-engine Cessna airplane) of that one airplane, we never had a single accident! . . . Living in Rockland County during our teaching years, we bought an abandoned farm outside of Bloomingburg (not far from Sha-Wan-ga Valley Airport) as a summer retreat, but soon sold our New City home and moved here full time. This involved commuting to our schools at Spring Valley and Pearl River for 11 years, until our retirement in 1981. . . When I joined the Pine Bush Community Band, Winnie didn't want to be left out, so when the director asked her to beat the bass drum she accepted. She taught herself to read the drum music and became part of the group. The band took part in the Ellenville Flag Day to Fourth of July concerts and parades and summer concerts in the gazebo in Pine Bush, and many other concerts around the area. . . Togetherness was Winnie's strong suit, and she will be sorely missed by her husband and many friends. 'Til death do us part' was our by-word and never has it been more faithfully followed!"
Mrs. Bowman also enjoyed boating and motorcycling. She was a life member of the National Rifle Association with a Rifle Safety Instructor's rating. She and her husband joined the Civil Air Patrol and she organized and ran a target shooting group in the rifle range in the armory where the Orangeburg CAP Cadet Squadron met. She earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the CAP.
She is survived by her husband of more than 52 years, Delbert Bowman, at home; two sons, Rodger and his wife, Melody and their three daughters, Genevieve, Elizabeth and Kathleen, all of Derby, Conn., and Robin Bowman of Indian Trail, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the William Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush.
