Zella R. Panebaker of Liberty, died on Thursday, October 7, 2004 at the Achieve Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Liberty. She was 104.
She was born in Champaign, IL on September 15, 1900 to the late John R. and Helen Reynolds Reid. She was the widow of David E. Panebaker.
She was a graduate of Cornell University and worked as a schoolteacher for many years. She was a resident of Liberty since 1930 when she moved from Albion. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Monticello, the Liberty Garden Club, Sarah Wells Council of Girl Scouts, the Liberty Library Board, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Altar Guild of St. John's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Helen P. Farrell of Syracuse and Shirley P. Krum of Endwell, two grandsons, one great-great-grandson and one great-great-granddaughter.
There will be no visitation.
A graveside funeral service was conducted by Rev. Ninon Hutchinson at the family plot in Liberty Cemetery.

Harold P. Kespert
Manager, 82
Harold P. Kespert was a resident of Youngsville, then Brooksville and finally Inverness, FL. He was 82.
He was born in Binghamton.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness, served in the US Army during WWII with Company I 333rd Infantry, graduated from Alfred University, was a volunteer fireman in Youngsville, was a manager at Yaun Electrical Company in Liberty, and enjoyed square dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Kespert, two daughters, Laurie Trelease of Oneonta, Kathy Orr of Mossyrock, WA, a brother, Wilber Kespert of Brooksville, several cousins and five grandchildren.
A service of remembrance will be held for him on Friday, October 15, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes with Pastor Craig Davis officiating. Cremation will be under the direction of Hooper Funeral Homes.

Kenneth Bowdren
Ret. Veteran, 80
Kenneth J. Bowdren of St. Augustine, FL and Cochecton died Tuesday, October 5, 2004. He was 80.
He was born in Peekskill on September 1, 1924 to the late Mary and Richard Bowdren. He resided for many years in Jeffersonville, was a 20-year military veteran and a retired teacher for Sullivan County BOCES. He was a member of St. Anastasia's R.C. Church, the VFW and the Benevolent Order of Elks.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Geraldine Stevens Bowdren at home in St. Augustine and his eight children, Patricia Malkasian and husband, Jim of Suwanee, GA; Pamela Bowdren of West Palm Beach, FL; Lynn Bernas and husband, John of Cochecton; Geraldine Orr and husband, Bill of Youngsville; Bridget Semenetz and husband, Gregg of Jeffersonville; Beth Blum and husband, Steven and Maureen Decker and husband, Alan of Asheville, NC and son Kenneth Bowdren and wife, Nancy of Sackett Lake; his 22 grandchildren, Celeste, Victoria, Jennifer, James, Timothy, Jeffrey, John, Matthew, Luke, Morgan, Melissa, Nicole, Robert, Kate, Gregg, Aileen, Sean, Ashley, Ben, Brianna, Amanda and Max; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, MacKenzie, Kaylin and Drew.
Also surviving are his three brothers, Lawrence, John and William Bowdren, He was predeceased by his brother, Richard.
A family statement: "A wonderful man whose love for and pride in his family is exceeded only by the love and devotion of his wife, children and grandchildren for him. A strength beyond measure, he has lifted the hearts of many and will continue to do so throughout our lives. We will cherish our memories and dad will continue to guide us as he always did."
Funeral Mass will be held on October 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with the Father Ignatius Smith officiating.
Nicholas Van Malden
Ret. Dairyman, 87
Nicholas Van Malden of New Durham, NH, formerly of Freehold, NJ, died early Saturday morning, October 9, 2004 at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital in Dover.
He was born August 16, 1917 in Rotterdam, Holland, the son of the late Johannas and Jacoba (Kanook) Van Malden. Raised in Patterson, NJ, he had lived on Long Island for many years and in Freehold, NJ for over 50 years. He has resided in New Durham, NH for the last four years with his son, Bill.
He was proud to serve his country in the Army under the direction of General George Patton, serving in northern France, Ardennes, Rhine-land and central Europe. He received the American Theater Medal, Silver Star Medal, Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with Four Bronze Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Van Malden had retired from the State of New Jersey, having worked as a dairyman and driver for the Marlboro State Hospital. He had been a dairyman most of his life having worked at various farms in northern New Jersey.
He was a life-long member of the VFW post #4374, American Legion and the Elks, all of Freehold, NJ. Mr. Van Malden was known for his great sense of humor, enjoyed spending time with family and working outdoors and smoking cigars.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Eleanor (Hummel) Van Malden of Kemah, TX, formerly of Freehold, NJ; two sons, William "Bill" and his wife Dolores of New Durham, NH; and Edward R. and his wife Glinda of League City, TX; one sister, Betty Brumby of Muttonville, Long Island; five grandchildren, Emily and Jacob of New Durham and Angela, Justin and Sam, all of Texas; as well as nieces, including Jacobi Campfield of Narrowsburg; nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main Street, Narrowsburg, with a funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Glen Clove Cemetery, Narrowsburg.

Fay Marlene Young of Livingston Manor, a former employee of Falls Poultry and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 65 years of age.
The daughter of the late Judson M. and Helen F. Malloch Brush, she was born September 22, 1939, in Hancock.
She is survived by four daughters, Marlene Rivera and her companion, Dan Turissini of Allentown, Pa., Sharon Swartz and her companion John Turner of Telford, Pa., Susan Perry and her companion, Ray Klein, of Roscoe, and Marsha Young of Livingston Manor; three sons, Robert Young of Livingston Manor, William Young and his wife, Lisa, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Nelson Young and his wife, Irene Alexander, of Livingston Manor; three brothers, John Brush of Fish's Eddy, Judd Brush of Charlotte, N.C., and Lee Brush of Maine; a sister, Bonnie Maier of Orlando, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe with the Rev. Gerald Wondra officiating.

Eileen M. Summo of Monticello, a homemaker, died Friday, January 28, 2005, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. She was 62 years of age
The daughter of the late Thomas and Marie Daly Joyce, she was born May 17, 1942, in Brooklyn.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Summo, at home; two sons, Tim Summo of Youngsville and Jack Summo III and his wife, Pam, of Maryland; a brother, Tom Joyce of Kenoza Lake; and two grandchildren, Tim Jr. and Matthew, both of Albany.
Services were private.

Grace M. Decker of Hurleyville, a former typesetter for the Paterson Evening News and a longtime area resident, died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie Coman Young, she was born June 30, 1926, in Paterson, N.J.
Mrs. Decker is survived by her husband, William Decker Sr., at home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas H. and Linda Decker of West Milford, N.J., William Jr. and Jennifer Decker of Virginia, and Carl Decker of Liberty; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Jacqueline and Elbert Golder of Millsboro, Del., Marie Call of Liberty, Grace M. and Jeffery Rainforth of Aberdeen, N.J., Peggy E. and Andrew Horton of Woodbourne and Laura and Bruce Strain of Fallsburg; a brother, Robert Coman of Virginia; two sisters, Christine Moggett of Nevada and Charlotte Gilmore of Michigan; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty, with the Rev. Robert Konvalin officiating.
Burial will be made in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa Boro, N.J.
William Ruis
Ret. Laborer, 93
William Ruis of Callicoon, a retired laborer for and 50-year member of International Laborers Union in Passaic, N.J., died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at the Achieve Rehab and Nursing Center in Liberty. He was 93 years of age.
The son of the late Conrad and Mary Herzog Ruis, he was born July 10, 1911, in Clifton, N.J. He was the widower of Pauline Boehm Ruis.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Joseph Chaplin of Callicoon and Kathryn and Robert Snow of Warwick; and a sister, Kathryn Hay of Clifton, N.J; He was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Gustofson.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation was private.

Garry C. Myers III
CEO of Highlights, 59
Garry C. Myers III of Columbus, Ohio, Chief Executive of Highlights for Children, Inc., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, in Columbus. He was 59 years of age.
The son of the late Garry C. Jr. and Mary M. Myers, he was also the grandson of Garry Cleveland Myers, Ph.D and Caroline Clark Myers, who founded Highlights for Children magazine in 1946. His association with the magazine started in his early teens when he worked with the address-o-graph machine labeling magazines under the supervision of the late Jess Anderson, a longtime Highlights employee. Myers was the early model for Gallant, the much-loved brother in the popular Highlights feature Goofus and Gallant®.
Following the death of his parents in an air disaster in 1960, he and his four siblings moved to Austin, Texas, where they lived with their uncle and aunt, Jack and Evelyn Myers and their family.
Following enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1965, he graduated from U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, Calif., and served as a Spanish language specialist in Panama. He received a bachelor's degree in International Affairs at George Washington University in 1972 and then earned a M.B.A. in marketing from the University of Michigan. While still in the Army, Myers was elected to the board of directors of Highlights for Children, Inc. He joined Highlights in 1975 as a management information analyst. He became vice president of mail sales in 1978 and in 1980 was named president of the Highlights corporation. He has been chief executive officer since 1981. Highlights for Children is published by Boyds Mills Press in Honesdale, Pa., together with seven other subsidiaries.
Mr. Myers is survived by his wife, Melanie Myers, at home; two sons, Gregory and Garry Myers IV, in Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Patricia Mikelson of Columbus, Ohio, and Marie Jolene Rich of Maine; two brothers, Tom and Fred Myers of Austin, Tex.; an uncle, Jack Myers; and numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at the First community Church in Grandview, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Calkins Union Church in Calkins, Pa.
Burial will be made in the Calkins Cemetery.
