Kathleen Syrett Carlstrom of Damascus, Pa., formerly of East Meadow and a homemaker, died April 3, 2004. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late William and Ester Syrett, she was born December 2, 1917, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Charles "Norman" Carlstrom to whom she was married for 55 years.
A woman who loved children, she was honored in 1995 by Channel 12 News on Long Island and was selected "Mother of the Year." Not only did she have nine children of her own, she was a foster mother of 72.
She is survived by nine children and their spouses, Charles and Evelyn Carlstrom of Flanders, N.J., William and Lorraine Carlstrom of Far Hills, N.J., Robert and Barbara Carlstrom of Naples, Fla., Jane and Frank DelGaudio of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Kenneth and Sara Carlstrom of Washington, N.J., Christine and George Fahrbach of Levittown, Thomas and Barbara Carlstrom of North Great River, Kathleen Meyer of Hauppauge, and Regina and Thomas Kaufmann of Damascus, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joanne Syrett; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Syrett, a brother, William Syrett, and a sister-in-law, Terry Syrett.
A Funeral Mass was offered at Holy Cross R.C. Church in Callicoon on Saturday.
Interment will be made in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury in June.

Ethel M. Walsh
Homemaker, 74
Ethel Marie Walsh of Monticello, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 74 years of age.
The daughter of the late Harold and Pearl Bedford Smith, she was born March 25, 1930, in Monticello. She was the widow of Patrick J. Walsh who died June 25, 1977.
Mrs. Walsh is survived by two sons, Paul Walsh and his wife, Pat, of Rock Hill, and Edward Walsh of Wurtsboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and William Depuy of Harris; a sister, Edna Walsh of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Kristine, Heather, Ed, Barbara, Marilee, Sarah and Devinne; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Burial was made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Wilkin D. Nesbitt

Wilkin D. Nesbitt of Ellenville, a lifelong area resident and a former employee of the Ellenville Electric Co., died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was 80 years of age.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, he served on the U.S.S . Tilefish 207.
Mr. Nesbitt was a member of the Cook-Taylor Post #111, American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ellenville, Masonic Lodge #582, F.&A.M., the Beaver Dam Club, Pioneer Engine Co. and the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the Submarine Vets.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Scott Weir Nesbitt; three sons, Scott and his wife, Ursela Nesbitt of Galway, Thomas Nesbitt of Ellenville and his companion, Gail Hornbeck of Woodbourne, and Ted and his wife, Judy Nesbitt of Waleska, Ga.; and three grandsons, Sean Nesbitt, Tony Bilyeu and Adam Bilyeu. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Nesbitt, and two sisters, Jean VanKleeck and June VanEtten.
There was no visitation or service.

Patrick ‘Pop’ Bergin
Contractor, 59
Patrick M. "Pop" Bergin of Pine Bush, a 30-year area resident and a self-employed contractor with The Bergin Group in Middletown, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at his home. He was 59 years of age.
The son of the late John Sr. and Madeline Olio Bergin, he was born November 16, 1944, in Nyack.
In a family statement, it was said, "Pop will be greatly missed by his family, relatives and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. Family was his first priority. The family is at peace knowing that he is hand-in-hand with his mother, father and son and in the presence of God. 'Be good and be careful.'"
He is survived by his wife, Alice Foster Bergin, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Timothy Carroll of Walker Valley; two sons, Joseph Bergin of Middletown and Frank Bergin of Pine Bush; two sisters, Mary Seebach of Bloomingburg and Judy Barkley of Cuddebackville; two brothers, Frank Bergin of Bloomingburg and John Bergin Jr. of Nyack; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and an aunt, Victoria Dutra of Burlington, Vt. He was predeceased by a son, Patrick J. Bergin and a brother, Louis Bergin.
Friends may call at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush, on Thursday from 1-3 p.m.
Services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Hewitt officiating.
Burial will be made in the family plot in the Walker Valley Cemetery.

Joseph W. Johnston of Wurtsboro, a retired truck driver for ATI Automotive in Mahwah, N.J., died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the Highland Hospital in Sebring, Fla. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph and Agnes Foster Johnston, he was born March 26, 1930, in the Bronx.
Mr. Johnston was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro and active in the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Church in Monroe where he was involved with the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley H. Hathaway Johnston, at home; a son, Joseph Johnston of Middletown; three daughters, Ellen Mandia of Rock Tavern, Margaret Andryshak of the village of Florida and Nancy Henry of Baldwin; a brother, James Johnston of the state of Florida; a sister, Catherine Attis of Pompano Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Washburn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Sullivan St., Wurtsboro with the Rev. Peter Madori officiating.

Edward Kapral, a 15-year resident of Jeffersonville, a former resident of Spring Valley and a retired employee of Lederle Labs in Pearl River, died Wednesday, April 1, 2004, at Wilson Hospital in Binghamton. He was 80 years of age.
The son of the late Michael and Sophie Kapral, he was born November 9, 1923, in Spring Valley. He was the widower of Euphemia Kapral.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Matrafailo of Jeffersonville; a son, Garry Kapral of Chestnut Ridge; a brother, John Kapral of Wilmington, N.C .; two sisters, Jean Ossman of Sparkill and Helen Spysly of Spring Valley; two grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Lois Maldonado and Peter and Cori-Lee Matrafailo; and two great-grandchildren, Gethin and Alexa.
Services were held Monday at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home.
Burial was made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet.

Eliza Smith of Monticello, a counselor for New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 78 years of age.
The daughter of the late Saul and Julia Frazier Holmes, she was born November 3, 1925, in Brunswick, Ga.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Sterling Hayden Methodist Church in Sterling, Ga., and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by four sons, Ronald J. Smith of Peekskill, Rev. John Cline of South Fallsburg, Willie J. Cline of Old Town, Fla., and Frederick and his wife, Linda Smith, of Lemoyne, Calif.; two daughters, Betty Jeane Smith of Monticello and Viola Jordan, and her husband George, of South Fallsburg; several brothers and sister, including Sam Holmes and Walter Holmes; eight grandchildren, Joyce, Louise Teretha, Ebony, Kareem, Malcolm, Gregory and Zaneta; 10 great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Miecha, Jessica, Travis, Tyjhe, Elyjah, Tylor, Zhenne, Sir Eric and Sierra; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Liberty St., Monticello, with the Rev. James Matthews officiating.

Albert K. Fisher of Sparrowbush, a retired glass blower for Gillinder Bros. of Port Jervis and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at the Castle Point Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Albert and Dorothy Parker Fisher, he was born August 13, 1929.
Mr. Fisher was a member of the Sparrowbush Fire Department Engine Co. #1; a past captain and lieutenant of the Sparrowbush Fire Police; and attended the Sparrowbush United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Fisher, at home; a son, David Fisher of Sparrowbush; four daughters, Carolyn West of Port Jervis, Beverly Calben and her husband, Craig, of Glen Spey, Jean Decker and her companion, Robert Ellis, of Port Jervis and Peggy Holmes and her husband, Joseph, of Altoona, Pa.; 15 grandchildren, Brian and Kevin Fisher, Erin Amato, Melody Hinds and her husband, Chris, Charles and Bridget Calben, Eileen, Scott, and Jennifer, Brandy, Bryanna, Decker, Nicole and Staci May; two step-grandsons, Dwayne Holmes and Jere West; and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Travis Holmes, a son-in-law, Ted West, and a sister, Greta.
Services were held Monday at the Sparrowbush United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Mayer officiating.
Interment was private.

Justina B. Colandrea of Newburgh, a homemaker, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh. She was 75 years of age.
The daughter of the late Biagio and Assunta Scotto Baiano, she was born November 11, 1928, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Victor R. Colandrea who died in 1998.
Mrs. Colandrea was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and a former member of the Catholic War Veterans Women's Organization.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Salvatore D. and Frances Colandrea and Gary M. and Barbara Colandrea, all of the Town of Newburgh; two daughters, Vicki A. Mackey and her husband, Donald, of Wallkill, and Lisa J. Colandrea of Bloomingburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Mary Baiano of Eldred; three sisters, Filomena Santise of Newburgh, Rose Santise and her husband, Joseph, of Florida, and Domenica "Mae" Quattrocchi of Newburgh; five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her step-father, Gaspar Quattrocchi.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.
Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.
