Ret. Dairy Farmer, 68
Gladys L. Slater of Kenoza Lake, a lifelong area resident, a homemaker, a retired dairy farmer and a former longtime employee of Brey's Egg Farm in Kenoza Lake, died Monday, December 6, 2004, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. She was 68 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank and Louise Dreher Gabel, she was born November 13, 1936, in Callicoon. She was the widow of George Slater.
In a family statement, it was said, "Some people are the foundations of their communities. It's hard to find a neighborhood activity taking place without them. They are solid members of the fundamental institutions of its society. They give freely of what they have so that the life of the town seems to go on uninterrupted. Gladys Slater was one of those people for Kenoza Lake. Extremely active with the Kenoza Lake Fire Department's Booster Club, and with the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church, Gladys played an active role in organizing, advertising and working at all of Kenoza Lake's annual fund raisers. She worked tirelessly at the Methodist Church and Kenoza Lake Fire Department's chicken barbecues and pancake breakfasts. Gladys helped to organize the fire department's annual roast beef dinners and she worked unstintingly at them. It was Gladys who collected most of the door prizes from local merchants for the Booster Club's penny social. Gladys seemed never to run out of time to lend a hand and help neighbors in need by driving them to town or visiting former community members residing in nursing homes. All one had to do was walk past her house, and she would come out and talk. And when she wasn't in her house or helping out in the community, she would be in her garden. It seems that once people like Gladys Slater have left us, we feel how much they have done for us, and how sorely we miss them."
Mrs. Slater is survived by a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Slater and her friend, Roland Besimer of Swan Lake; two sons, George Slater and his wife, Melissa, of Kenoza Lake, and David Slater of Jeffersonville; a sister, Helen Wachter of Jeffersonville; two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Christopher Slater; and several nieces and nephews. Burial was made in the Bauernfeind Cemetery in Callicoon.
