Solomon Sholom Charles Solowitz
Ret. Scrap Metal Dealer, 88

Solomon “Charles” Solowitz of Monticello, a retired scrap metal dealer, and longtime area resident, died on Monday, July 23, 2007 in James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Bronx. He was 88.
Solomon was born in Brooklyn on October 10, 1918, the son of Abraham and Rachel Taubman Solowitz.
He was a World War II and Korean Navy veteran. He was a member of Bethel Senior Club.
He is survived by his longtime companion and love, Tina Pantalona at home; his daughter, Babbs Solowitz Kaplinsky of Los Angeles, Calif.; his son, Sandy Solowitz of Los Angeles; his three grandchildren, Samatha Lee, Molly and Robert; his brother, Martin Soloway of Florida; his two sisters, Florence Steurenthal of Florida and Rosalind Mazo of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Solomon was predeceased by his wife, Lillian; son Robert Alan Solowitz at age 18; and his four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 26, 2007 at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Inc., Monticello. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiated.
Burial was made in the Agudas Achim Cemetery, Livingston Manor.

Robert Henry, 47

Robert L. Henry of Middletown, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, August 6, 2007 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill in Goshen. He was 47.
The son of the late Walter L. Henry Sr. and Joan B. Smedes Henry, he was born December 6, 1959 in Middletown.
He is survived by his mother Joan and companion James “Poppy Jim” Haskins at home; two sisters, Barbara Conklin and husband Bill of Bloomingburg, Betty Jo Stone and husband Stephen of Greenville; three brothers, Walter Henry Jr. and wife Mary of Montgomery, David Henry and wife Colleen of Greenville, and Dwayne Henry and companion Charlotte Baker of Bloomingburg; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his pet, Sassy.
Robert was predeceased by his father, Walter L. Henry Sr., and his grandparents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 10 at William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Road, Pine Bush. The Rev. Betty Connell will officiate.
Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery.

Michael Mays Sr., 30

Michael Jamar Mays Sr., a three-year resident of Middletown and a route representative for the Times Herald-Record, died Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, Middletown. He was 30.
He was a member of St. James COGIC, Middletown, and a graduate of Monticello High School.
The son of Michael Johnson and Tanya Hardison, he was born September 15, 1976 in New York City.
Survivors include his wife, Shanna McCullough Mays at home; one son, Michael Jamar Mays, Jr.; three daughters: Deja Mays, Nadja Mays and Myah Mays, all at home; his father, Michael Johnson of Brooklyn and mother, Tanya Hardison of Middletown; three brothers: Damien Johnson of Brooklyn, Tyrone Mays and Mario Mays, both Middletown; three sisters: Tanya Mays, Mary Mays and Frances Mays, all of Middletown; maternal grandmother, Marylena (Ma) Mays King of Middletown; mother-in-law, Albertha McCullough: uncles, Keith, Kevin, Clarence III, Archie, Jackie, Thomas, Melvin, Nathaniel and William; aunts, Josephine, Kelly, Delores, Caprice, Paulette and Ruthie; one nephew; two nieces; godmother, Yvonne Colon, and brother-in-law; many cousins; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Wednesday at St. James COGLC, Middletown. The Rev. Dr. William A. Best officiated.
Interment will be made in Hillside Cemetery, Middletown.

Vera Tobin
Retired Librarian, 94

Vera Tobin of Callicoon, a retired librarian for the Delaware Free Library in Callicoon, died on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She was 94.
The daughter of the late Otto and Augusta Backert, she was born August 20, 1912 in New York City. She was the widow of Neil Tobin. Vera was one of the original founders of the Delaware Free Library, and also a founder of the Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon. She was an avid reader of books and an avid bowler.
Survivors include her step-children, Jim Tobin of Hornell and Jack Tobin of Hancock; her sons, Pat Tobin of Atlanta, Ga., David Tobin of California, and Terry Tobin of Fishkill, and numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Alan Hankins and Donald Hankins, and a daughter, Marilyn Tobin Sharetts.
A Memorial Mass was held July 24 at Holy Cross Church, Callicoon. Father Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiated.
Interment was made in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Long Eddy.

Dr. Henry J. Kent
Research Fellow, 53

Dr. Henry J. Kent, a research fellow for International Paper in Sterling Forest died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at his home in Bloomingburg. He was 53.
The son of Fredrick Kent and Margaret Wurzinger Kent, he was born February 2, 1953 in Plymouth, England.
Henry was a Research Fellow at International Paper in Sterling Forest from 1986 until 2004. His research included mathematical modeling of coatings and led a group of scientists in the design of novel instrumentation to characterize fundamental properties of paper. His published works include three papers in the Royal Society in London England, as well as numerous other contributions to the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) in the United States. He held numerous U.S. Patents for his instrumentation. Recently he had been consulting for a number of companies in the U.S. and Europe. He was actively involved in the Save the Children programs.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Reitemeyer Kent, at home; his parents of Austria; a son, Gene Kent of England; a daughter, Candice Kent of England; two stepsons, Keith Durchanek of Greenwood Lake and Christopher Durchanek of Bel Air, Md.; and a granddaughter, Caitlyn.
A memorial service was held Monday evening at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Wurtsboro.
Interment will be made in the family plot in Kindberg, Austria at a later date.

Rochelle L. White, 88

"ROCHELLE, DEAREST - Julie, Tina and I agree that life had nothing better to offer than moving in your orbit. From the bottom of our hearts – thanks. Forever yours, Erwin."
Rochelle L. White was born in Mountaindale on April 16, 1918 and died August 12, 2006.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Beth El, Spring Valley.
Interment will follow at Hebrew Congregation of Mountaindale Cemetery, Glen Wild.
Arrangements were entrusted to Hellman Memorial Chapels, Spring Valley.

Pearl Last Feldman
Homemaker, 94

Pearl Last Feldman of Hurleyville and Margate, Fla. died Friday, August 18, 2006. She was 94 years young.
The daughter of Isaac and Yetta Meyerhoff, and the youngest surviving member of a family of eight siblings, she was born August 11, 1912 in Hurleyville.
Pearl was the loving and devoted mother of Joan Last Pletter; grandmother of Timothy Pletter and his wife, Nili, Adam Pletter and his wife, Jennifer; and great-grandmother of Jack, Olivia and Dana Pletter. She was also a special aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by Joseph Last and Abraham Feldman.
She will be greatly missed.
Pearl was the matriarch of a large family, who often looked to her for advice. She had great insight into the human condition, and was always ready with a helpful solution to just about any situation.
Pearl was also known for her quick wit and her great sense of humor. Her ability to tell a joke for any occasion was legendary. She always believed that laughter is the best medicine.
Pearl’s childhood summers were spent at the family’s hotel, The Woodside House in Hurleyville. In the winter, the Bronx was her home. Pearl spent her adult career caring for her daughter, Joan, while working full time for Roux Cosmetics and The American Automobile Association. She was the first woman salesperson hired by AAA, where she won many awards for her salesmanship. She was a true pioneer.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday at Congregation Anschei cemetery, Hurleyville.
Funeral arrangements were made by Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Monticello.

Ida Mae Finn
Homemaker, 85

Ida Mae Finn, of Monticello, a retired cook and longtime area resident, died Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 85.
The daughter of the late Richard Davis and Allie Warren Davis, she was born April 4, 1921 in Franklinton, La. She was the widow of Solomon Buster Finn.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Temple Church in Monticello and the Sullivan County Branch of the NAACP.
She is survived by her two daughters, Gladys Walker and her husband James Madison Walker, and the Hon. Josephine V. Finn, all of Monticello; two grandchildren, Todd Jay Walker and Nicole Jamie Walker, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Solomon Finn Jr; and her siblings, Luther Davis, Oscar Davis, Mattie Hart, Hattie Magee, Artis Davis, BJ Davis, William Davis, Clara Mae Taylor, Maurice Davis, Curley Davis, Olevia Davis, Willie J. Davis and Alton Davis.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 22 at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Road in Monticello.
A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Mervin Armstead will officiate.
Interment will be made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Temple Church Missionary Dept, P.O. Box 178, Monticello, NY 12701.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.
