Clementina Theresa "Jim" Winand, a resident of Deltona, Fla., since 1998, a former longtime Liberty resident and a retired nurse who worked for Dr. Lee R. Tompkins of Liberty for more than 30 years, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at Majestic Oaks at John Knox Village in Orange City, Fla.
The daughter of the late Wilhelm and Maria Lerch Schwenz, she was born April 13, 1901, in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Harry R. Winand who died in August of 1985, after more than sixty years of marriage.
In a family statement, it was said, "She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by many."
Mrs. Winand is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Watson of Liberty; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Winand of Neversink; four grandchildren, Nancy Watson of Deltona, Fla., Tom Watson of New Jersey, Harry B. Winand and his wife, Shirley, of Neversink, and Denise Jones and her husband, Steve, of Atlanta, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren, Katherine Snyder and her husband, Terry, of Canton, Tex., Donald Burke and his wife, Karen, of Middleburg, Fla., Jeanne Lipper and her husband, Noah, of Palm Bay, Fla., Jennifer Watson of New York, Kyle and Matthew Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Harry Daniel and Tabitha Winand of Neversink; seven great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends She was predeceased by a son, Harry F. Winand who died in April of 2004.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 26 Chestnut St., Liberty, with the Rev. Audrey Pedersen officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Liberty.
Valleau Edward Curtis
Businessman, 75
Valleau Edward Curtis of Callicoon, a retired aviator and nurseryman and a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at his home after an extended illness. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Valleau and Florence Curtis, he was born December 15, 1929, in Liberty.
A Naval aviator during the Korean War, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air medal for "heroism and extraordinary achievement," carrying out a series of daring attacks on North Korean industrial facilities, a munitions factory and anti-aircraft positions while under heavy anti-aircraft fire, on May 25, 1952. He received the Commendation Ribbon and Combat Distinguishing Device for an attack on heavily defended North Korean hydro-electric facility and power system on June 24, 1952. He was presented with a Navy commendation for rescuing a pilot from a burning aircraft on April 15, 1954. Lieutenant Junior Grade Curtis was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955.
A 1947 graduate of Delaware Valley Central School and Syracuse University, he was president of the Callicoon Water Company and executive director of the Landscape Materials Information Service in Callicoon. He had previously served as president of Curtis Nurseries, manager of the Sullivan County Airport and chairman of the Town of Delaware Planning Commission. He also flew as a commercial pilot for Tsuga Air charter service.
He served on the Sullivan County Parks and Recreation Commission since 1964. A member of St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon, he was a reserve member of the Callicoon Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa, at home; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Valerie and Jerry Boss of Decatur, Ga., Holly and Phil Perdan of Pelia, Iowa; Jessie and Jason Baade of Modena and Christine Curtis of Fort Worth, Tex. ; two granddaughters, Dr. Diana Boss of Portland, Oreg., and Pheobe Baade of Modena; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Kit Curtis of Damascus Township, Pa.; and a sister, Mary Curtis of Callicoon.
Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon on Sunday at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Joan LaLiberte officiating.

Carol G. Edwards
Homemaker, 66
Carol Gilbert Edwards of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, growing up in Callicoon, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 66 years of age.
The daughter of the late Daniel and Ruth Collister Pelton, she was born March 17, 1939, in Perry. She was the widow of Vernon Edwards and Frederic Gilbert.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, David V. and Agnes Edwards of Moravia, Thomas C. Edwards of Highland Mills and Timothy G. and Mary Edwards of Forest City, Pa.; a daughter, Laura Edwards of Liberty; two brothers, Daniel Pelton of Liberty and Robert Pelton of Tennessee; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and James Relyea of Callicoon Center and Shirley and Arthur Relyea of Clarksville; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Bevier, Bryan Edwards, Gina Edwards, Kelli Schrader, Jonathan Edwards, George Edwards, Andrew Edwards, Jennifer Moriarty, Rachel Moriarty and Richard Moriarty; a great-grandchild, Bryce Bevier; and three special friends, Conor, Brendan and Owen Siegel. She was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Caldiero, and a brother, Gary Pelton.
Services were held at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty on Monday with the Rev. Roy Shaffer officiating.
Burial was made in the Rural Cemetery in Grahamsville.

Rose Foy
Homemaker, 88
Rose Foy of Woodbourne, a former resident of the Bronx and a homemaker, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 88 years of age.
The daughter of the late Benjamin and Sarah Karp, she was born July 23, 1916, in New York City. She was the widow of Michael Patrick Foy who died in 1992.
Mrs. Foy is survived by a daughter ad son-in-law, Susan and John "Pat" DeMarsico of Woodbourne; two grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Nicole Congelosi of Woodbourne and Karen and Eugene Divodetes of Largo, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Congelosi and Alexandra Sasha Divodetes. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Hanley, a brother, David Karp, and a sister, Mary Meyer.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Pinelawn Memorial Park with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.

Homemaker, 73
Emma Hannon Guinness Cote, a longtime resident of Yankee Lake and Jacksonville, Fla., died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, after a long and valiant struggle with myasthenia gravis at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late William Freeman and Mary Mildred Ryan Guinness, she was born October 21, 1931, in Newburgh. She was the widow of Paul L. Cote who died December 7, 2003.
Mrs. Cote was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh, a graduate of Mount St. Mary Academy in Newburgh and a graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J., with a B.A. in Math.
She is survived by several cousins, including Alma Guinness of New York and Barbara Ryan Perez of Newburgh; and many dear friends.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church, 55 Grand St., Newburgh, with Monsignor John Budwick officiating.
Interment will be made in Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.

Anna M. Payne of Liberty, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 69 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Swierczek Kraycer, she was born December 10, 1935, in Olyphant, Pa.
Mrs. Payne was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty.
She is survived by two sons, Paul Muthig Jr. of Minnesota and Brian Payne of Colorado; two daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Leonard Mott of Ferndale and Sheryl and Kevin Blume of White Sulphur Springs; three brothers, Joseph Kraycer of Port Jervis and Michael Kraycer and his wife, Gaile, and Edward Kraycer and his wife, Susan, all of Liberty; a sister, Bernice Danzer and her husband, William, of Liberty; four grandchildren, Helen Lee, Allison Andrews, Kevin Blume and Derek Blume; five great-grandchildren, Jenna and Christopher Lee and Zackary, Tyler and Kayla Andrews; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.

Ret. Secretary, 77
Doris Turshen of Brooklyn, a former resident of Jeffersonville and a retired secretary for Quality Bakers of America in New York City, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. She was 77 years of age.
The daughter of the late Lester John and Louise Elizabeth Esselmann Hust, she was born December 13, 1927, in Jeffersonville. She was the widow of Maximillian Turshen
She is survived by a brother, Lester Hust of Youngsville; nieces and nephews, including Kent Simpson of Madison, Ind., Kim Simpson of Anderson, Ind., Valerie Doolittle of Barneveld, Duane Hust of Jeffersonville and Sherrie Hust of Youngsville; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and several cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Simpson.
Services were held Monday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with the Rev. Lee Andrews officiating.
Burial was made in the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Cemetery.

Porfiria Rivera, a five-year resident of Ellenville and a retired EKG technician at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at her home. She was 69 years of age.
The daughter of the late Eugeneno and Ruperta Rosa Negron, she was born January 17, 1936, in Puerto Rico.
Mrs. Rivera was a member of the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Ellenville and the AARP.
She is survived by her husband, Efrain Rivera, at home; a son, Ivan Rivera of Brooklyn; a daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and Albert Santiago of Grahamsville; six grandchildren; several sisters and brothers; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, William and Frank.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, 137 South Main St., Ellenville.
Burial will be made in the Fantinekill Cemetery in Ellenville.

Eleanor Knieriemen of Warwick, a retired secretary with Mars and Mance of Florida, N.Y., died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Warwick. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Elsie Wigger Hyatt, she was born June 7, 1925, in New York City. She was the widow of Lothar Knieriemen.
Mrs. Knieriemen was a parishioner of St. Stephen's Church in Warwick where she served on the Altar Society and was a parish clerical worker. She was a past Regent of Court of St. Anne, Chapter 909, Daughters of the Americas; a member of the Monsignor Pregenser Rosary Group, the Charismatic Prayer Group and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
In a family statement, it was said, "She was a great Mom, at her finest when times were tough and especially when one of her children needed her. We all did. Those who knew her always say what a fighter she was, a woman of courage and strength. Bravely she faced life after the loss of her husband, Lothar, and throughout the many, many years she struggled with emphysema. She found comfort in her Catholic faith, the dear friends she made there and those she came to know at Creekside. Especially dear to Mom and the entire family is Mary Jankowski, a true friend and neighbor for over forty years. We want to thank all of you who visited her at home, in the nursing home and in her final days. We are grateful also for the compassionate care she received in St. Anthony's Hospital in Warwick. Mom, we will all miss you."
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann Bailey and her husband, Al, of Miller Place, and Eleanor M. Knieriemen and her partner, Cindy, of Wurtsboro; two sons, Lothar J. Knieriemen and his wife, Susan, of Summerfield, Fla., and Karl Knieriemen and his companion, Tami, of Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Alyson; a sister, Frances Nieves; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be made in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Warwick.
