Fmr. Liberty Mayor, 86
Ida “Skippy” Frankel Lipschutz, a longtime area resident and former mayor of the Village of Liberty, died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Morris and Molly Levowitz Bergman, she was born April 20, 1919 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
The first female to run for mayor in Liberty, she served as the mayor for the Village of Liberty for 10 years. Skippy was the first female president for the NYS Conference of Mayors, a member of the John F. Kennedy Jr. Inaugural Ball Committee, and Hospice Inaugural Ball. Skippy was also the Past Association Chairman of the Sullivan County Democrats.
A family statement reads: “Skippy was a strong and motivated woman who had many talents. She was a great singer and dabbled a bit in show business. She was smart and savvy and left quite a legacy for her family.”
Skippy is survived by her loving sons, Marc “Alan” Frankel and Alex Frankel, both of Middletown. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Nat Bergman, Julius Bergman, and Alex Bergman.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown.
A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in Congregation Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty.
Joyce C. Bury
Homemaker, 73
Joyce C. Bury of Roscoe, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of Annabelle Finnegan Lake and the late Harold Lake, she was born July 17, 1932 in the Town of Colchester.
Joyce is a former employee of the Roscoe Community Nursing Home and a past member of the Roscoe Hose Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, James Bury and his wife, Kathleen, of Baltimore, Md., Michael Bury and his wife, Laura, and Gary Bury and his wife, Trinidad, all of Roscoe; a daughter, Brenda Bury and her husband, Marc Bernosky, of Tonawanda; seven sisters, Dorothy Pherreigo and her husband, Victor, of Bullhead City, Ariz., Barbara Cromie, Virginia Wakeman and her husband, Russell, Rosemary Fassberger and her husband, George, and Alice Meyers, all of Roscoe; Sharon Keene and her husband, Ronald, of Cooks Falls; and Carol Ann Gerow and her husband, Thomas, of Cary, N.C.; three brothers, Donald Lake and his wife, Marcia, of Walton, William Lake, and Thomas Lake and his wife, Roxanne, all of Roscoe; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the widow of Walter H. Bury. She was predeceased by her loving friend, William Dirie.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave., Roscoe.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30 at the funeral home. Lucille Freyer will officiate.
Private burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe.

Ret. Supervisor, 76
Chuck Williams, a retired telephone company supervisor, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in Fort Worth. He was 76.
Survivors include daughters, Debra Kasper and husband, Anthony of Ocala, FL, Donna Stewart and husband, Scott of Burleson; a granddaughter, Amanda Stewart of Burleson; a brother, Eldon Williams and wife, Betty of Independence, MO; a sister-in-law, Doris Williams also of Independence, MO; other family members include Gary and Alicia Stewart of The Colony; and many nephews, nieces and extended family.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Skyvue Victoria Chapel in Mansfield.
Eugene E. Clark
Ret. Cor. Therapist, 79
Eugene E. Clark of Greenlawn and Roscoe, a retired Corrective Therapist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Northport, died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at his home in Greenlawn. He was 79.
The son of the late William H. and Mary Ellen Gordon Clark, he was born January 4, 1927 in Rochester.
Gene had served our country in the US Army during World War II, he had been a Communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church; a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and former Cub Scout Leader and Little League Umpire; he was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Dette Clark, at home; two sons, Gary Clark of Greenlawn, and Alan Clark also of Greenlawn; two daughters, Linda Fox and her husband, Frank of Centerport and Gail Martin and her husband, Benjamin of Hillsboro, OR; six grandchildren, Joseph Fox, Jamie Fox, James Martin, Jonathan Martin, Jeffrey Martin and Julie Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today, March 28, from 2-4 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave., Roscoe.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 29 at 11 a.m. in the Gate of Heaven Church, Highland Ave., Roscoe. Monsignor William Collins will officiate.
Burial will be in the Bon Air Cemetery, Roscoe.

Alice Gillow Johnston of Liberty, formerly of Long Eddy, died Monday, March 27, 2006 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 81.
The daughter of Sanford and Erma Williams Minckler, she was born April 7, 1924 in Callicoon. She was the widow of Paul Gillow Sr. and George Johnston.
She was a retired nurses aide at Hancock Hospital in Hancock, a member of the Long Eddy Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Allan Milk Post Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She is survived by her children, Paul Gillow, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, of Long Eddy, Robert Gillow and his wife, Rosie, of Beach Lake, Pa., Sarah Vacca of Loch Sheldrake, Dawn Davis of Binghamton, Karl Gillow and his wife, Carol, of Long Eddy, Mary VanPelt and her husband, Bruce, of Woodbourne, and John Gillow and his wife, Theresa “Tess,” of Beach Lake, Pa.; a sister, Wanda Sutton of N.C.; four brothers, Allan Minckler of Florida, Alvin Minckler of Pennsylvania, Gerald Minckler of Long Eddy, and David Minckler of Jeffersonville; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha Swendsen and Edith Fuller; a brother, Alfred Minckler; and a son-in-law, Aaron Davis.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 31 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.
Burial will be made in Halsey Cemetery in Long Eddy.

Verna A. Dixon
Ret. Supervisor, 91
Verna A. Dixon of Schaghticoke died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Van Rensselaer Manor following a lengthy illness. She was 91 years of age.
Born May 4, 1914 in Montgomery, she was the daughter of the late Jason and Johanna Hendrickson Ayers. She was the widow of Kenneth B. Dixon.
She attended Graham’s School in Hastings-on-Hudson and graduated from Campbell Hall High School.
Before her retirement in 1973, she had been the Night Supervisor of Operators for Long Distance Calling at the former New York Telephone Co.
She is a member of the Presbyterian United Church in Schaghticoke, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Hiram Lodge, New Haven, CT. Along with her late husband, she participated in the Shriners Egypt Temple of Tampa, FL. She was a member of the New York State Organization of China Painters and operated a Porcelain Doll Making Studio in Schaghticoke for a number of years, and she also taught China Painting in Florida.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and William Popp of Schaghticoke, and Eleanor and Donald Lare of Jeffersonville; a sister, Evelyn Bye of DePauw, Ind.; 6 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and Edward Ayers; and two sisters, Helen Lorentzen and Marion Hof.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian United Church, Main Street, Schaghticoke.
Burial will be made in Memory’s Garden, Colonie.

Henry R. Kuhner, 75
Henry R. Kuhner of Malcolm, Neb., died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at his home. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Henry and Berta Weber Kuhner, he was born June 21, 1930 in Brooklyn.
Mr. Kuhner grew up in the Beechwoods, and later moved to Nebraska.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Stefanie and Dennis Bowers of Malcolm, Neb.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce Kuhner of Malcolm, Neb., and John and Kathy Kuhner of Shaver Lake, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanore and Charles Berner of Cochecton; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln, Neb., with military honors led by the Nebraska Army National Honor Guard.

Ret. Business Owner, 90
Charles A. Burgio, a 54-year area resident, died Monday, March 27, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years of age.
The son of James and Dorothea DeRosa Burgio, he was born October 12, 1915 in Carbondale, Pa.
Mr. Burgio was the owner-operator of Charlie’s Barber Shop in Liberty for 48 years. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Liberty, a life member of the Clarence Hoyt Post #9217 VFW in Liberty, and a former member of Liberty Elks Lodge #1545. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1941-1945 during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Betty” McAuley Burgio, at home; three sons, Charles W. Burgio and his wife, Elizabeth, of Liberty, Robert J. Burgio and his wife, Kim, of Liberty and William R. Burgio and his wife, Denise, of White Sulphur Springs; a daughter, Dorothea E. Garrihy and her husband, Thomas, of East Windsor, N.J.; a special brother-in-law, Jack McAuley of Yulan; four brothers, John Burgio and wife, Rosalie of Toms River, N.J., Vito Burgio of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., James Burgio and wife, Sonya, of Fayetteville, N.C., Joseph Burgio and Theresa Burgio of Carbondale, Pa; two sisters, Louise Drob of Carbondale, Pa and Mary Bucca of Lyndhurst, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Cheryl A. Gerow, Meghan Garrihy, Jaime Burgio, Deanna Burgio, Chad Burgio, Christopher and Brendan Garrihy, and Michael and Timothy Burgio; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Angelo, and a sister, Caroline Miller.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday at St. Peter’s Church in Liberty with Rev. Matthew Foley officiating.
Burial with military honors was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Liberty.
