Dorothy Harris
Ret. Dance Inst., 93

Dorothy Perkins Harris of Queens County, Woodbourne, and Summerfield, Fla., passed away at her daughter’s home in Fernandina Beach at five in the morning on April 19, 2006. She had celebrated her 93rd birthday this past Easter Sunday.
Because she looked so much like her father, Bill, Dorothy was nicknamed “Billie” and in her youth she played the violin, taught ballet and tap-dancing and attended Hunter College in New York City.
She was married to her late husband, Harold Harris, also from New York City, for 69 years. Harold passed away also in the morning on the 19th day of the month in 2002. Harold and Dorothy met when she was 15 and he was 16 years old and married six years later. Anyone who would listen could hear the beautiful love story of how Dorothy had never even dated another boy. She knew from the start that Harold was her guy. It is said that behind every good man is a good woman. A truer word was never spoken concerning the young Harris couple. Having been forced out of school to work in his father’s business, the young Harold was determined to be a good provider for his “Billie.” The young couple sat together at the kitchen table every evening as Dorothy helped Harold learn how to be an Electrician, like her dad, reading with him out of a leather bound black book provided to them by Harold’s father-in-law Bill. They would work together late into the night, yet each would be fresh for work the next morning. Dorothy as a homemaker and Harold as a man of all trades in his dad’s Restaurante Supply shop. Dorothy convinced her husband to work for the Electrician’s Union and Harold eventually joined the IBEW Local #3 and became a Gold card member. With his devoted stay-at-home wife and mother of his four beautiful daughters by his side, Harold rose to the top at Broadway Maintenance and he supervised the lighting of almost all the major highways, bridges and runways in New York City. Prior to his retirement, Dorothy’s guy Harry, supervised the electrical maintenance of the World Trade Center, Twin Towers. Dorothy has been waiting for more than three years to be reunited with her true love, and her ashes will be scattered with his at a private family memorial service.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Harris Mayer of Medford, N.J., Judith Harris Pappas of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Janet Harris Halecky of New York City; five grandchildren, David Snowberger, Mary Helen Sims, Jill Bercaw, Robert Mayer, and Stephen Halecky; and five great-grandchildren, Darien Bercaw, William Sims, Michael Sims, Riley Mayer and Declan Mayer.
