Thomas F. McNeely
Ret. Proprietor, 91

Thomas Francis McNeely (nee Albonesi), formerly of Monticello, died August 2, 2006 at the James G. Johnson Nursing Home in Johnson City. He was 91.
The son of Charles and Ruth McNeely Albonesi, he was born April 15, 1915 in Dumont, NJ. After his mother’s death, he was raised by his aunts and grew up and lived most of his life in Monticello.
One of his favorite childhood memories was fishing with Babe Ruth at St. Joseph’s in Forestburgh. He starred in both football and track at Monticello High School and held the school record in the 440 for over 30 years.
He served in the U.S. Army 51st Field Artillery Battalion and as a medic in the Pacific during WWII. He joined his aunt as business manager of the Hamilton Ave. Hospital in Monticello where he was also known for his skill as an x-ray technician. Later he worked tirelessly as the proprietor of the United Cigar Store and then the Book Nook in Monticello. For the last 15 years, he has enjoyed spending winters in Sarasota, Florida. He moved to Johnson City in 2001. He was a longtime member of the Masons and was active in the First Church of Monticello Presbyterian.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Margaret Seargent McNeely of Johnson City; two daughters, Alice McNeely and husband, John Smigelski, of Windsor and Carol Ehrets and husband, Walter, of Forestburgh; a son, Peter McNeely and wife, Yolande, of Glen Spey; five grandchildren, Owen, Seth and Caitlin Smigelski and Laurel and Russell Ehrets; cousins, Muriel Nemits, Barbara Yanchitis and Frances Alford; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sat., August 12 at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 55 St. John St., Monticello.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13 at the First Church of Monticello Presbyterian with Rev. Robert McLeod officiating.
Burial of the cremains, with military honors, will be made at 4 p.m. Sun., August 13 at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Sunset Lake Rd., Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Monticello Presbyterian, 11 Jones St., Monticello, NY 12701.

Jack Kirschenbaum
WWII Veteran, 86

Jack Kirschenbaum died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at Achieve Rehabilitation Facility in Liberty. He was 86.
The son of Samuel and Pauline Bittner Kirschenbaum, he was born Nov. 21, 1919 in Bronx, where he grew up.
He was a decorated veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific.
Jack was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth, who died in 1991, who he sorely missed and was always in his heart, and one son David, who died in 2002.
Jack is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Georgette Kirschenbaum; his grandchildren, Kevin, Kenny and Michelle Newman and Lauren and Emile Kirschenbaum; one cousin; and his best friend, Jennette Lederman.
A graveside service was held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Queens.
Arrangements were made under the direction of Colonial Memorial Funeral Home.

Paul J.H. Pen Jr.
Carpenter, 36

Paul J.H. Pen Jr. of New Port Richey, Fla., a carpenter and former longtime resident of Port Jervis, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 in New Port Richey. He was 36.
The son of Paul J.H. Sr. and Linda M. Storms Pen, he was born June 24, 1970 in Port Jervis.
Survivors include his father of Port Jervis; his mother of Tennessee; two sons, Paul Pen III and David Pen, both of New Jersey; a daughter, Ashley Pen of Florida; three brothers, Craig A. Pen and Charles J. Pen both of Port Jervis and Brian D. Pen of Alabama; two sisters, Janet Gonzales of Newburgh and Chasity Storms of Monticello; maternal grandparents, Charles and Doris Storms of Port Jervis; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. Friday, August 11 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Cremation will be made at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, Pa.

Theresa M. Miller
Homemaker, 83

Theresa Marie Miller, a 50-year resident of the area, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, Middletown. She was 83.
The daughter of Joseph R. Amadei and Theresa M. Smollin Amadei, she was born May 20, 1923 in Maywood, N.J.
She retired from the family business, Miller’s Grocery Store in Bloomingburg.
A family statement said, “Mom was a wonderful devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She never met a person who she didn’t consider a friend. She will be greatly missed by all.”
Survivors include her husband, Henry G. Miller Jr. at home; her children, Theresa Barzly and husband, Azriel, of Port Jervis, Joanne Johnson and husband, David, of Bloomingburg, Frances Cole and husband, Timothy, of Liberty, Henry Miller III of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles Miller of Bloomingburg; six grandsons, David Jr. and Brian Johnson and his fiancée, Kateryna Polka, Shawn Johnson and his wife, Yadira, and Gregory Johnson, all of Bloomingburg, Joseph Walker-Scott of Port Jervis, and Paul Cole of Liberty; one great-granddaughter, Charlyanna Johnson; one sister, Frances Henriksen of Pensacola, Fla.; and one brother, J. Robert Amadei of Pensacola, Fla. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, James Amadei; and a sister, Patricia Lawler.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Infant Saviour, Route 302, Pine Bush with Father Kevin Gallagher officiating. Burial will be made in Bloomingburg Cemetery.

Beatrice E. Mead
Ret. LPN, 77

Beatrice E. Mead of Boulder City, Nev. died August 5, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The daughter of the late Ethan and Mae Lee, she was born July 3, 1929 in Liberty.
Beatrice was a retired licensed practical nurse, was a resident of Boulder City for 6 years, and had previously resided in Greenville for 20 years. She was a loving mother and a big fan of baseball. She loved the New York Yankees.
She is survived by her sons, Merritt “Mick” Mead of Boulder City, Michael Mead of Swedesboro, N.J., and Charles Mead of Boulder City; a daughter, Patricia Ardler of Greenville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Boulder City Cemetery Pavilion, 501 Adams Blvd., Boulder City, Colo. Boulder City Family Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Robert Lew, 54
Maintenance Director

Robert Lew of Mountaindale, died suddenly Monday, August 14, 2006 at home. He was 54.
The son of Bernard and Bethia Lubitz Lew, he was born December 31, 1951 in Brooklyn.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from California State University in Long Beach, Calif., and was employed as a Maintenance Director for the Renaissance Project in Ellenville. He was a proprietor of B. Lew Plumbing; a partner and manager of an apartment complex in Monticello; and proprietor of Jokers Tavern & Restaurant in Mountaindale. Bob was a member of the National Honor Society of PHI KAPPA PHI and loved to volunteer for the Big Brother Organization.
He is survived by his parents, Bernard and Beth of Mountaindale; one step-daughter, Nicole Yuhas; one brother, Benson Lew and his wife, Fern, of Great Neck, L.I.; and three nieces, Gypsy Notov-Lew, Laura Adamo, and April Adamo.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 17 at 2 p.m. at the Hebrew Congregation of Mountaindale Cemetery, Mountaindale. Rabbi Irwin Goodman will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the OSU Foundation, Morgellous Research Fund, ATTN.: Brad Walker, OSU-CHS, 111 W. 17th Street, Tulsa, OK 74107.

Dawn Spangenberg, 29
Tyson Processing Empl.

Ms. Dawn Spangenberg of Berryville, Ark., a former resident of Cuddebackville, died Saturday, August 12, 2006 in Green Forest, Ark. of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 29 years of age.
The daughter of Joseph and Delores Ladlee Spangenberg, she was born May 31, 1977 in Middletown. She was a 1996 graduate of Port Jervis High School.
She was employed at the Tyson Processing Plant, Berryville, Ark., and had previously worked at the Carlucci Home in Greenville Township.
She is survived by a daughter, Brianna Dillon of Berryville, Ark.; her parents, Joseph and Delores Spangenbrg of Hazelton, Pa.; three brothers, Joseph Spangenberg, John Spangenberg and Jeffrey Spangenberg, all of Arkansas; a niece, Destiny Spangenberg and her best friend, Chrissy Dolan of Westbrookville; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at a later date to be announced.
Burial will be made in Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville.
Memorial contributions may be made to her daughter, Brianna Dillon, c/o Michelle Reiley, P.O. Box 257, Cuddebackville, NY 12729.
Funeral arrangements are by the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis.

Raymond Prokosch, 66

Raymond “Skippy” Prokosch of Monticello died Friday, August 11, 2006 at the age of 66. He fought his illness bravely from his home with family and friends by his side.
The son of Lydia Coney Prokosch and the late Raymond Prokosch, he was born September 26, 1939 in Monticello.
Skippy served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1958. He lived in Monticello his whole life and, aside from his 20-year job at Sleepy Hollow as an assistant superintendent, he did a great deal of volunteer work. “Poppy’s” love for his children and grandchildren kept him very active in Glory to God Christian High School and Light and Life School in Liberty. Because of his love for his family, he was an avid skater and worked at Skater’s World Roller Rink in Ferndale. This enabled “Poppy” to be a part of the kid’s fun times.
He was a volunteer fireman for Forestburgh Fire Dept.; a lifelong member of First Church of Monticello-Presbyterian; and attended the Willowemoc Baptist Church, where his best friend Pastor William Lamb officiates.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Virginia Cherry Prokosch; three daughters, Mary Ann VanPelt and Chassidy and Selena Prokosch, all at home; four grandchildren, Desirae and Justin Schubert and Frances and Jeanne VanPelt, all at home; his mother, Lydia Prokosch of Monticello; two sisters, Joyce Bullock and her husband, Richard, of Accord, and Jeanette Hamilton and her husband, Fred, of Newfoundland, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Charles Cherry and his wife, Audrey, of Monticello; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his friends, Tiffany and Gregg Pitula, who were like children to him, and MaKayla Jahn, Christopher Pitula, and Joshua Boyles, who were like grandchildren to him. He was predeceased by a daughter, Debra Mae Prokosch, and a brother, Douglas Prokosch.
A memorial service in honor of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20 at the First Church of Monticello-Presbyterian, Jones Street in Monticello.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home of Monticello.

Hugh Haynes Jr., 85
Ret. Quality Inspector

Hugh “Marvin” Haynes Jr. of Narrowsburg, a retired machinist quality control inspector, died Friday, August 11, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pa. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Hugh Marvin Sr. and Almira Staudinger Haynes, he was born March 3, 1921 in the Mount Olivet area of Pittsburgh, Pa., though he grew up in Ridgewood, Queens.
He lived for many years in New York. As a boy, he was active in the Boy Scouts and church; as an adult raising a family, his church activities continued and expanded. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army in the 69th Infantry Division. While living in Landsford, Pa. for 31 years, he was active in a variety of organizations and activities, such as his church, especially the choir, the Coalcracker Chorus, a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, several senior groups, and the local Senior Olympics. He lived in Narrowsburg for the last three years, and was a member of the Tusten Seniors, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by four daughters, Gail Topp of Brooklyn, The Rev. Phyllis Haynes of Narrowsburg, Nancy Haynes of Brooklyn, and Jennifer Lieckel of Freeland, Pa.; two sons, David Haynes and his wife, Marti, of Marquette, Mich., and Andrew Haynes of Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nora Roberts; a brother, George Haynes; and two sisters, Lois Frieburg and Ursula Baumer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg. The Rev. Phyllis Haynes will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 64 Erie Ave., Narrowsburg, NY 12764.
Funeral arrangements were made by Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg.
