Edward “Ed” James Pepper, a longtime resident of the area, died suddenly Sunday, August 13, 2006 at home. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Norman and Jenny McCourt Pepper, he was born June 24, 1924 in Brooklyn.
Mr. Pepper served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Corporal from 1943 - 1946. He lived in Long Island for many years and had many occupations. He was a professional window washer for skyscrapers in New York City; an animal trainer in which he trained animals for TV commercials and parades; and shoed horses. He was an avid skater and worked at Skater’s World Rollerink in Ferndale, and his most recent occupation was as a maintenance staff member at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake. He owned and operated the Haywire Ranch in Woodbourne as well as making appearances on the TV shows, “What’s My Line,” “The Betty Crocker Show,” and “Strike It Rich.”
In a family statement, it was said: “Dad worked every day of his life. No matter how sick he felt or how bad the weather was, he went to work. Work kept him young. He was an avid horseback rider and was very proud to be able to ride any horse. He will always be remembered as he rode tall in the saddle. Everything he knew about horses, he passed onto his daughter, Jeanne. She will always remember some of his last words which were, ‘Hold on tight, Jeanne.’ Dad had a phenomenal memory and told endless stories every time you saw him. He was a best friend to his children and many times he went without so that his children would be all right.”
He is survived by his loving children, Susie Worrell of Rhode Island, Jeanne Kern of Neversink, and Edward Pepper Jr.; one brother, Norman Pepper of Long Island; two sisters, Alice Hermann and Maureen Mullins of Long Island; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Pepper; and a daughter, Carolyn Hanna.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 17 at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert Pinto will officiate.
Burial will be made in Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.
Felix Reynolds, 75
Ret. Labor Union Worker
Felix Reynolds of Monticello, a retired labor union worker at Local #17 and an area resident for 50 years, died Sunday, August 13, 2006 at his home. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Elmer and Mahilia King Reynolds, he was born January 24, 1931 in Camden, N.J. He was the widower of Alberta H. Reynolds who died January 29, 2006.
Mr. Reynolds was a member of the International Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk Lodge #1612, Monticello and attended the First Baptist Church of Monticello.
He is survived by two daughters, Georgianna H. Thomas of Monticello and Rosetta H. Dyes (Richmond) of Rochester; two sons, Ricky and Ronald Reynolds of Morris, Pa.; four grandchildren, Brenton C. Walker (Abby), Katori E. Walker, Myya R. Dyes and Broderick R. Dyes; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Goldman Reynolds, Geneva Dingle (Frank), Dorothy Lambert, Ida Mae Oduola and Willie Mae Redd; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Dantzler and James Hilliard; four nieces, Darlene Wilcox-Bickham (John), Tamera Reynolds-Zwerling (Mylo), Carolyn Reynolds and Helen Reynolds; nephews, Randall Reynolds (Kathy) and David Reynolds Jr; and a host of grandnieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Alberta E. Hilliard; and two brothers, Ellery Reynolds and David Reynolds.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 18 at the First Baptist Church, Liberty Street, Monticello. The Rev. James Matthews will officiate. Burial will be made in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Marguerite P. Matthews
Ret. English Teacher, 79
Marguerite “Maggie” Matthews, a retired English teacher and a 44-year resident of Liberty, died peacefully August 7, 2006 in Gwynedd, Pa. after a long illness. She was 79.
The daughter of the Rev. Cecil and Lucile Plumb, she was born December 17, 1926 in North Hornell. She was the widow of Paul F. Matthews who died in 1977.
She taught English at Sullivan County Community College from 1966-988. Following her retirement, she served in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa from 1988 to 1990. She was a faithful member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was a past clerk of the Catskill Friends Meeting in Neversink.
Mag’s love of the outdoors and activity was nurtured by many years of participation in Catskill Wheelmen Bicycle Club and the Catskill Nordic Ski Club. Mag’s joy was expressed in her singing with the Delaware Valley Chorus and acting with the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop. She was also a member of the Peacemaker Players and played a major role in two of the group’s productions. Her Liberty Bridge Group friends sharpened Mag’s sense of wit and fair play on a weekly basis. Until her illness, Mag adopted Chestnut Street in Liberty in her efforts to preserve the beauty of her town.
Mag’s dream was to make the world a better place for her children, grandchildren and all people to live without war or violence. She and Paul pursued this dream with determination and action inspired by their Quaker faith. In 2003, Sullivan Peace and Justice honored Mag for “a life of peace and activism.”
Maggie is survived by her loving sister, Marian Hamlin and her husband, Paul, of Binghamton; her four loving children, Juliet Scala of Swan Lake, Girard Matthews and his wife, Linda, of Afton, Philip Matthews and his wife, Jenifer, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Kate Gallaher and her husband, James, of Bloomingburg; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Mariner, Michelle Mariner, Daniel Sayre, and Jonathan, William, Rebecca and Aliza Matthews; and her extended family of nieces, nephews and friends who will all dearly miss Mag’s loving and thoughtful spirit.
A Memorial Service will be held in Quaker tradition at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at the United Methodist Church, 170 North Main St., Liberty.

William H. Taylor
Equipment Operator, 60
William “Pop” H. Taylor of Otisville, died Sunday, November 12, 2006 at Orange Regional Medical Center Arden Hill Campus. He was 60.
He was born March 17, 1946 in Greenpoint, the son of the late John and the late Pauline Wolfe Taylor.
William worked as a self employed heavy equipment operator.
A family statement reads, “Pop was a loving father, grandfather and brother. Your laughter made everyone laugh with you. Your caring heart was bigger than you. The memories from our childhood to our adult lives will be with us forever. We love you Dad.”
Surviving are his former wife, good friend and mother of William's children, Beverly B. Taylor of Otisville; sons, William Taylor and his fiancee, Michele Reiley of Cuddebackville, Tommy Taylor of Otisville, Christopher Cox of Otisville; daughters, Marlana DePolito and her husband, Michael of Otisville and Kayla Cox of Otisville; brother, Kenneth J. Taylor of Pocono, Pa.; five grandchildren, Joseph Taylor, Danielle DePolito, Mark DePolito, Matthew Reiley and Eddie Reiley; father-in-law, Walter Butler of Monticello.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port Jervis, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Name R.C. Church, Otisville. The Rev. Peter Tran Van Phat officiated.
Burial was made in Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville.

David E. Weigel
Yaun Co. Employee, 55
David E. “Grumpy” Weigel of Youngsville passed away unexpectedly Monday, November 13, 2006 at his home. He was 55 years of age.
Born March 22, 1951 to the late Grace and Frank Weigel, he grew up in New Hyde Park, Long Island.
He graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College in Fort Schuyler. He was a former captain in the Merchant Marine, and worked in the warehouse at Yaun Company in Liberty.
Grumpy was very active with the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturing of the Boy Scouts of America. Every weekend was filled with hikes, camping, crew events and adventures. He was recently appointed to the position of District Commissioner of the Delaware River District in the Hudson Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, and he received several leadership awards, including Powder Horn.
He volunteered at the Jeffersonville Public Library, the Youngsville Church bazaars, and donated blood regularly to the American Red Cross. At the Youngsville Firehouse, he volunteered as a member of the “sweat-hogs dishwashers.”
Survivors include his sister, Kathleen Petruso of Florida; two nephews, Jimmy Petruso of Florida and Eric Weigel of Westchester; his beloved grandkids, Heather Hathaway and Alexander McBeath; two daughters, Liz Tucker and Kathy Cast; several cousins; many friends, including Bob Zimmerman and Rob Ridley; fellow Leaders and Boy Scouts; and his loving dog, Ben. He was predeceased by a brother, George.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 17 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Michael Chumack
Ret. Repairman, 86
Michael Chumak died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale, Pa. after an illness. He was 86.
The son of the late Dimitri and Ustina Hozanien Chumak, he was born in New York City.
He was a retired elevator repairman, and a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Priscilla Chumak, Hampton Bays; a sister, Tania Kasura of West Nyack; two nieces, Sandy Kasura, West Nyack and Christina Matern, Equinunk, Pa.; and a nephew, Timothy Kasura of Glenwood, Md.; five great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 17 at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, Pa.
Interment will be in St. Tikhon’s Monastery Cemetery, South Canaan.
Robert N. Gangel
Ret. Engineer, 85
Robert N. Gangel of Narrowsburg, a retired engineer for Sperry Rand Corp. and short time resident of the area, died Sunday, November 12, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, Pa. He was 85.
The son of the late Jay C. and Isabel Coon Gangel, he was born September 10, 1921 in Elizabeth, N.J.
Robert was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Navy as a Technical Engineer 1st Class.
“A family statement read, “Robert had moved here from Long Island, he loved the small hamlet of Narrowsburg. He felt that the people were the nicest that he had ever met. Moving here was a happy ending to his full life. He is surely going to be missed by all.”
Robert is survived by his son, Geoffrey Gangel and his wife, Wanda, of Narrowsburg; two daughters, Robin Thomas and her husband, Michael, of Long Island and Lorin Dana and her husband, Bill, also of Long Island; two grandchildren, Jenna Gangel and William Morgan; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mai Schmidt Gangel of 32 years, who passed in 1980; his brother; and his beloved cat, Fanny, who passed a week before.
Funeral services were private.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Elmer P. Geib
Business Owner, 97
Elmer P. “Shorty” Geib, formerly of Liberty and Middletown, died on November 15, 2006 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, following a brief illness. He was 97.
He was born in the Town of Delaware on July 1, 1909, a son of the late Charles and Freda (Schaefer) Geib. On October 6, 1940, he was united in marriage with the former Nel N. McKay in Jeffersonville. Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Stag during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Seaman First Class. Mr. Geib was employed as an auto mechanic from an early age and had owned and operated Shorty’s Service Station in White Sulphur Springs for several years. Mrs. Geib preceded him in death on July 17, 1991.
He was a former member and elder of the First United Presbyterian Church and a member of V.F.W. Post #9217, both of Liberty. In recent years, Elmer moved to Middleville to be with his family and since 2004, had resided at Claxton Manor in Herkimer. Earlier this year, he was transferred to the Health Center at Folts Homes.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Anita E. and Theodore P. Smith of Middleville; four grandchildren, Anna J. Smith of Middleville, Lisa J. Dibble of Richfield Springs, Thomas A. Dibble of Middleville and Clifford L. Dibble and his wife, Arlene, of Little Falls; a sister-in-law, Vera M. Reilly of Jeffersonville; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Osmer F. Geib on January 29, 2003.
Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jon A. Noble, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Little Falls, officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Burial will be made Monday in Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.
