Etta M. Cooper, 78
Ret. Care Provider

Etta M. Cooper of Crystal, Minn., a former Middletown resident, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Crystal Care Nursing Center in Crystal, after a lengthy illness. She was 78 years of age.
She married the Rev. Randa Lee Joy Cooper with whom she had eight children, including a set of triplets and twins.
Mrs. Cooper loved gardening, cooking and raising her children. She gave up her career as a licensed home care provider to assist in raising several grandchildren.
She is survived by five daughters, Robin Annette Cooper-Howard of Dallas, Tex., Sandra Cooper of Brooklyn, Melinda Lori Cooper of Woodbridge, Va., Carolyn "CiCi" Cooper of Crystal, Minn., and Terry Teresa Cooper-Richardson of Yonkers; four sons, David "Pete" Underwood of Monticello, Deacon Ralph Edward Cooper of Upper Marlboro, Md., Sheldon Cooper of St. George, S.C.; three daughters-in-law, Ruby Agee-Underwood of Monticello, Tonia Pomare-Cooper of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Paula Scott-Cooper of Middletown; a son-in-law, Michael Richardson of Yonkers; a step-daughter, Patricia Cooper of San Bruno, Calif.; a sister, Pauline Turner of Orrum, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Estes Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis, Minn.

Manuel Martinez, 77
Ret. Construction Wkr.

April 25, 2000 -- Manuel Martinez of Monticello, a retired construction worker with union Local 1010 in Flushing and a 53-year area resident, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 77 years of age.
The son of the late Miguel Martinez Navarro and Maria Concepcione Gonzalez Vidal, he was born March 17, 1923, in Spain.
Mr. Martinez attended the Monticello congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He is survived by his wife, Sophia Martinez, at home; three daughters, Maria Ortiz of Livingston Manor, Delphina Speese of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Lorraine Martinez of Sunbury, Pa.; a son, Manuel Martinez of Middletown; two sisters, Carmen Martinez and Concetta Rebollo of Spain; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Antonio and Miguel Martinez.
Services were held Monday evening at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Monticello.
Interment was made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

Ruth Silberman
Ret. Antique Dealer, 92

Ruth Silberman of Monticello, a retired antique store owner in Monticello and a 70-year area resident, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at her home. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of Jacob and Rose Arvutis, she was born September 24, 1907, in Russia. She was the widow of Isaac Silberman.
Mrs. Silberman was a member of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Gail Avrutis of Montana; good friends, Carl and Shirley Goldstein of Monticello; and close friends and companions, Dorene Kanaan and Patricia Harrera, both of Monticello. She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Herbert Avrutis.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello with Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz officiating.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.

Paul Wegman
Truck Driver, 66

Paul Wegman of Swan Lake, a truck driver for Agway and Frank Porter and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at his home. He was 66 years of age.
The son of the late Fred and Rose Manges Wegman, he was born November 28, 1933, in Roscoe.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Ackerley Wegman, at home; two sons, Paul Wegman of Houston, Tex., and William Wegman of White Sulphur Springs; three brothers, Eugene and Edward Wegman, both of Roscoe, and Harold Wegman of Walton; three grandchildren, John, Paul and Rebecca Wegman; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Richard Hewitt officiating.
Burial was made in Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.

Benedict LaMarca
Ret. Produce Mgr., 85

Benedict Francis LaMarca of Wurtsboro, a retired produce manager at Grand Union in Point Pleasant, N.J., and a longtime area resident, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the Middletown Park Manor in Middletown. He was 85 years of age.
The son of the late Louis and Mary Navoso LaMarca, he was born July 19, 1914, in Manhattan.
Mr. LaMarca attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., and was a former night club owner in New York City.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Cook LaMarca, at home; a daughter, Barbara Davis of Cloister, N.J.; two sons, Louis LaMarca of New Paltz and Leonard LaMarca of Dunbarton, N.H.; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was private.

Bertha Bernhardt
Homemaker, 95

Bertha "Bert" Gertie Bernhardt of Kenoza Lake, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Helen Snedeker. She was 95 years of age.
The daughter of the late John and Cora Lucy Brown Abplanalp, she was born December 15, 1904, in Liberty. She was the widow of John Bernhardt.
Mrs. Bernhardt was a member and past trustee of the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday School Superintendent and treasurer for 30 years, and the recording secretary for many years. She was a lay leader and speaker and organized the Junior League for the youth of the church. Mrs. Bernhardt was also a member of the Kenoza Lake Cemetery Association.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Carl Reinshagen of Neversink and Helen and Alfred Snedeker of Kenoza Lake; a foster son, George H. Fulton, and his wife, Shirley, of Livingston Manor; a half-sister, Madeline Van Fradenburgh and her husband, Edward, of Kauneonga Lake; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear sister-in-law, Mabel Bernhardt. She was predeceased by a sister, Mabel, two brothers, Clarence and Eugene Abplanalp, and her stepmother, Katherine Abplanalp.
Friends may call at the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church with a dear friend, Eileen Brey, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church or the Kenoza Lake Fire Co., both at Kenoza Lake, N.Y. 12750, the Jeffersonville First Aid Squad, Jeffersonville, N.Y. 12748, or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, 800 Stony Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Raymond Rake
Mason, 47

Raymond Rake of Long Eddy and Equinunk, Pa., a self-employed mason, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He was 47 years of age.
The son of Russell and Thelma Kenyon Rake, he was born November 19, 1952, in Newton, N.J.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Rhodes Rake, and two children, Tyler and Cory Rake, all of Long Eddy; his parents, Russell and Thelma Kenyon Rake of Equinunk, Pa.; three sisters, Florence Eldred and Joan MacPeek, both of Galilee, Pa., and Patricia Conklin of Honesdale, Pa.; two brothers, William Newport of Equinunk, Pa., and Allan Rake of Tyler Hill, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Nancy Russell officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Long Eddy.

Arthur Brown
Ret. Club Mgr., 75

Arthur Brown of Liberty, a former vice president and night club bar manager for the former Brown's Hotel in Loch Sheldrake and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, April 17, 2000, in New Port Richey, Fla. He was 75 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Mary Tick Brown, he was born May 10, 1924, in Oliverea, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Ernst Brown, at home; a son, Evan Brown of Liberty; a daughter, Bari Gladstone Strobel of Burlington, Vt.; three step-children, George Tuttle, LuAnn Roberts and Robert Tuttle, all of Livingston Manor; a sister, Cynthia Lipson of California; two grandchildren, Carly and Abby Gladstone Strobel; four step-grandchildren, Leah Waldorf, Erik Roberts, Paul Tuttle and Tiffany Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello, followed by graveside services at the Congregation Ahavath Israel Cemetery in Liberty with Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiating.

Charles V. Millard Sr.
Ret. Erie Engineer, 82

Charles V. Millard Sr. of Barryville, a lifelong area resident and a retired 34-year engineer for the Erie Railroad, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Mercy Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Charles and Bessie Kriedler Millard, he was born July 12, 1917, in Scranton, Pa. He was the widower of Lila H. Burlew Millard who died November 12, 1995.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and retired from the Erie Railroad as an engineer in 1977.
He is survived by eight sons and their spouses, Charles V. Jr. and Melisse Millard of Springfield, Vt., Gerald Talmage and Susan Bloom of Pond Eddy, Charles R. and Barbara Millard of Bloomingburg, Dennis and Donna Talmage of Jasper, Ga., Richard and Blanche Talmage of Cape Coral, Fla., Charles and Louise Talmage of Erin and Robert and Doris Talmage of Bernardsville, Tex.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Darlene Bowers of Barryville and Rosalie and Richard Kowinsky of Port Jervis; a sister, Shirley Reid of Moscow, Pa.; 26 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren with three expected; two nieces and three great-nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Vernon Lee Millard.
Services were held Saturday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with Glenn Graham officiating.
Burial was made in the Fairview Cemetery in Elmhurst, Pa.
