Corrections Officer, 44
Bryant Paul Allen, of Somerset, NJ, formerly of Monticello, a corrections officer for the Middlesex County Department of Corrections, died unexpectedly in New Jersey on Sunday, February 27, 2007. He was 44.
He was the son of the late Rudolph and Jean Williams Allen and was born on January 2, 1963 in Monticello.
Survivors include two brothers, Craig Allen of Killeen, Texas. and Ronald Allen of Monticello; five sisters, Deborah Allen of Monticello, Sheila Duncan of the Bronx, Jill King of Elizabeth, NJ, Theresa Dorsey of North Brunswick, NJ, and Dana Allen of Monticello; a special aunt and uncle, Jerry and Dolores Williams of Monticello; two aunts, Dorothy Williams of Fairhope, Ala. and Ida Hold of Mobile, Ala. and several nieces, nehews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Rd., Monticello on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Services will be at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. (Evangelist) Dolores Williams officiating.
Burial will be in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements are by Ramsay’s Funeral Homes Inc., Monticello.
Joseph Salamone, 84
Joseph Salamone of Liberty, died on Monday, February 26, 2007 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 84.
He was born in the Bronx on July 4, 1922 to the late Louis and Mary S. Inzano Salamone.
He worked at Sam's Pet Shop in the Bronx before retirement.
He is survived by several cousins and he was predeceased by his sister, Frances Amoretti.
Visitation was held at Ramsay's Funeral Home, Liberty on Wednesday, February 28.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, March 1, at St. Peter's Church, 264 S. Main St., Liberty. Rev. William Collins officiated.
Burial took place at St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Joseph Green, 63
Joseph W. Green of Woodbourne and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. He was 63.
The son of the late Kenneth Green and Josephine Hartman Green, he was born May 21, 1943 in Monticello.
Joe was very involved in the Woodbourne community when he lived there, especially as a manager of the Fallsburg Central School Varsity Basketball Team during the coaching careers of James McDermott and Martin VanVleet. He was also active in the community of Park City, Fla., where he lived for many years. During the past two years, he had resided at the New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake.
Survivors include three brothers, Dr. James Green and his wife, Judith of Monticello; Ernest Green of Albany; and Daniel Green and his wife, Carolyn of Glens Falls; two sisters, Mary Zagacki of Pembroke Pines, Fla. and Patricia Harris and her husband, Joel, of Weston, WV; an aunt, Ruth Cross; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held this coming spring. Further details will be announced shortly.

Arthur Lambert
Ret. Mechanic, 91
Arthur R. Lambert, of Eldred, a retired Mechanic for the Sullivan County Highway Dept. and a lifelong resident of the area, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at the Tide-Well & Palliative Care Center, Bradenton, Fla. He was 91.
Son of the late Arthur and Mabel May Box Lambert, he was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on April 26, 1915. He was the widower of Elsie Heusel Lambert.
He was a member of the Eldred United Methodist Church; Veteran of World War II, U.S. Army; member of the Eldred American Legion; life member of Sylvan-Liebla VFW Post, Eldred; Yulan Fire Dept., Highland Lake Fire Dept., and Fire Police; Eldred Senior Citizens; Mountain Stream Hunting Club.
Suvivors include three nieces: Ann Jackob of Brasher Falls, Carolyn Ray of Asbury, NJ, and Jannine Bennett of Farmingdale, NJ, and several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Lambert.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis. The Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst will officiate. Burial will be in Montoza Cemetery, Eldred with military honors.

Helen Steele, 83
Helen A. Steele, of Horton Brook, in Roscoe, a homemaker and lifelong area resident, died Monday, February 26, 2007 at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi. She was 82.
The daughter of the late John and Frances Barnhart Conklin, she was born March 15, 1923 in Cooks Falls.
Helen had attended the East Branch Community Church and she is a former member of the Cooks Falls - Horton Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Reginald J. Steele, at home, whom she married on October 28, 1943 in Walton; one son, Gary Steele and his wife, Jill, of Downsville; one grandson, Michael Steele and his wife, Lorie, of Horton Brook; one granddaughter, Jennifer Tompkins, and her husband Richard of Somers Point, NJ; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe. The Rev. Paul Cicio, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery, Horton, in the spring.

Anthony Jansic
Psychologist, 88
Anthony Francis Jansic, Jr. died at his home in Yorktown Heights, on February 28, 2007, after a long struggle with cancer. Tony was born in Cleveland, OH, on March 2, 1918 to Anthony Francis Jansic and Gertrude Ryan Jansic.
After graduating high school, Tony served in the Armed Forces during World War II as a communications technician, repairing airplane radios and radar. After leaving the Service, he attended Amherst College in MA, and entered graduate school in Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, receiving his Ph.D. in Child Psychology in 1954. Throughout his academic career he worked for City College of New York. At CCNY, he served as a psychology professor and program administrator for the graduate program in the School of Education. He retired from CCNY in 1981.
Before entering the Armed Services, Tony was briefly married and had a daughter. While a graduate student in Cleveland, Tony met and married Anna Spencer Roettger in 1947. Tony and Anna were married until her death in August of 1995. Together, they raised three children. Late in life, Tony met and fell in love with Evelyn Baeyens, who remained his companion and by his side throughout his illness.
Throughout his life, Tony was an avid catch and release fly fisherman and conservationist. He was an enthusiastic member of the Amawalk Rock Rollers, a local stream conservation group. Tony was a locally renowned fly tyer and lifelong member of Trout Unlimited, FFF and Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers. His other hobbies included nature photography, playing the violin, solving crossword puzzles, reading, listening to classical music and gourmet cooking.
Mary Sherwood
Former Teacher, 86
Mary Sherwood passed away at her home on February 21, 2007 after a brief illness. She was 86.
She was married to the late Donald Sherwood. They were married on October 16, 1942.
Mary was born in Conklin Hill, Pa., the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Hull Keesler.
She was a graduate of Damascus High School in Damascus, Pa. After graduation, Mary attended Bloomsburg College and received her teaching certificate. She taught at Damascus School for 23 years, three of them for high school, and twenty years for special education. Mary was involved in the local 4-H club and taught Sunday school. She loved to travel and enjoyed many crafts, gardening, and reading.
She is survived by six children, James Sherwood of Galilee, Pa., Gerald Sherwood and his wife, Karen, of Galilee, Pa., Mary Ann Sherwood of Honesdale, Pa., David Sherwood and his wife, Pat, of Manheim, Pa., Jack Sherwood and his wife, Diane, of Troy, Ala., and Donna Sherwood of Apollo Beach, Fl., six grandchildren, Brian Sherwood and his wife, Crystal, Tim Sherwood and his wife, Katie, of Troy, Ala., Angie Sherwood of Manheim, Pa., Kristy (Sherwood) Smyser and her husband Jay, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Season (Turano) Slish and her husband Nick, of Honesdale, Pa., and Nick Turano of Phoenix, Ariz, and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Sherwood, Kameron Slish and Olivia Slish. She was predeceased by three sisters and their husbands, Virginia and Richard Deighton, Roberta and Ernest Bortree and Doris and Vincent Mitchell.
A memorial service was held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale, Pa.

Leah B. Johnston
Ret. English Teacher, 101
Leah B. Johnston, a longtime resident of Livingston Manor, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 101.
She was born October 3, 1905 to Fred and Ernestine Sawdy Brayman in Livingstonville, Schoharie County. She graduated from Middleburg High School in 1922 and Syracuse University in 1926. She taught English in the Livingston Manor and Croton-Harmon High Schools before her marriage to William J. Johnston in June 1934. He died in March 1984.
She was a longtime member of the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, and former Deacon; a former Trustee and Volunteer Librarian at the Livingston Manor Free Library, and a member of the Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association.
She was predeceased by two younger sisters, Esther and Ruth; and an older son, William F. Johnston, Ph.D, and his wife, Anita.
She is survived by her son, John B. Johnston; a daughter, Nancy E. Johnston, both of Livingston Manor; three grandchildren William S. Johnston, DDS, and his wife, Dana, John J. Fedje-Johnston, MD., and his wife, Julie, both of Minnesota, and Elizabeth K. Leschensky, FNP, and her husband, Jeffrey, of Iowa, seven great-grandchildren, Molly and Jack Johnston, Hannah and William Fedje-Johnston, and Benjamin, Annette and Mitchell Leschensky; three Johnston nieces, and two Westfall nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor.
Burial was made in the Lew Beach Cemetery.

Ernest D. Slagus
Ret. NYC Police Officer, 83
Ernest D. Slagus of Livingston Manor, died Friday, July 27, 2007 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 83.
Ernest was born April 10, 1924 in Brooklyn, the son of Simon and Frances Slagus.
He was married to Nelly Slagus; the father of two sons, Raymond and Daniel; stepfather to Gloria; grandfather to Michael, Jennifer and Kimberly Slagus and Christopher Clark; great-grandfather to Joseph Clark; and brother to Al Slagus and Amelia Senaitis.
Ernest was a World War II veteran, who fought in the Pacific Campaign as an Army Medic, receiving many citations. He was a retired New York City Police Officer, serving 24 years.
After losing his first wife, Mary, he moved to Livingston Manor for his retirement years. Here he met Nelly Clark, and they have been married for the last 30 years.
He was laid to rest in the St. Charles Cemetery on Long Island on August 2.
