Henry S. Elwyn Jr. of Harriman passed away on Aug. 20, 2007 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany. He was 82.
He was the son of Henry S. Elwyn Sr. and the former Gladys Babcock.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII in the South Pacific. He was a 13-year resident of Freehold, and a 28-year resident of Harriman. He was the owner and operator of Elwyn Bros. Drywall in the 1960s, employing over 30 people. He was also a contractor, remodeler and homebuilder in the 1950s-1960s. He was a dairy farmer in the 1950s.
An avid old bottle collector and cat lover, he was also a hunter, fisherman, scuba driver, water skier, poet and writer.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth J. Elwyn at home; two daughters, Kathleen Cook of Yulan and Betty Charleston of Harriman; three sons, Henry Elwyn III of Middletown, Stanley Elwyn of Leeds, and Gary Elwyn of Freehold; a brother, Charles Elwyn of Lake Clear Junction; three sisters, Mildred Wolfe of South Cairo, Betty Thomas of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Doris Bailey of Bainbridge;12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Elwyn.
Funeral services were held Thursday at AJ Cunningham Funeral Home Inc. in Greenville.
Interment was made in the Medusa Cemetery, Medusa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the local animal shelter of one’s choice.
Beatrice Ruderman
Homemaker, 94
Beatrice Ruderman, a former resident of Woodridge, died Friday, August 17, 2007 in Vitas Hospice at the Florida Medical Center. She was 94.
Bette was born January 22, 1913 in Brooklyn, the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Patiky Sincoff. She weighed two pounds at birth, the last of triplets born at home in Brooklyn. There were seven children before the triplets as well. She married the late George Ruderman in 1934 and moved to Woodridge, then later relocated back to Brooklyn and retired to Tamarac, Florida in 1975.
She was a loving, devoted, caring, creative and very bright person. She was an avid reader known to read two books in one day, sometimes staying up all night to do so. She read anything she could get her hands on. In her own words; "From the Iliad and Odyssey to smut." Her grandchildren called her the "living dic-tionary." She was a fabulous gourmet cook, ranging from linguine with clam sauce to her stuffed cabbage and the tastiest brisket. She could knit and crochet as fast as a machine, but only for people she loved. Her grandson Robert used to call her with orders for sweaters and hats for his friends and babies in Mexico, or for poor babies in Israel. She always managed to knit up a few. Bette had a wonderful sense of humor and always made people smile. Quoting Robert, "My Nanny was given 1 gallon of gas many years ago and kept running for 50,000 miles."
She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn Burger and her husband, Charles, of Staten Island and Linda Fromer of Coconut Creek, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Ruth Ruderman; her grandchildren, Dr. Robert Burger, Randi Burger, Jill & Rich Holmes, Jodie Levine; her great-grandchildren, Shaun, Tyler, Corey, Allie Burger, Zachary Burger, Gunnar Holmes and Sydnie Levine; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and also by many people who loved her and called her NANNY.
Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, August 20 in the Workmen’s Circle, #281 Cemetery Marsh Rd., Glen Wild. Rabbi Irving Goodman officiated.
Shiva will be observed at Marilyn Burger’s home on Staten Island.

Alberta M. Myers
Retired Beautician, 92
Alberta M. Myers, a retired beautician and owner of the Eldred Beauty Shop in Eldred and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, August 17, 2007 at Achieve Health and Rehabilitation Facility, Liberty. She was 92.
The daughter of the late William and Irene Rosa Doughty, she was born April 27, 1915 in Halls Mills.
She was the widow of Stanley A. Myers.
She was a member of the Eldred Congregational Church and Ladies Auxiliary of the church. Alberta was the recipient of Mother of the Year Award from the Girl Scouts of Eldred. She received the Citizen of the Year Award. She was named Business & Professional Woman of the Year and she was the First Foster Mother of Sullivan County, raising over 225 children since 1944.
Survivors include five sons, Harris Myers and wife Becky of Kauneonga Lake, Harry Krom of Eldred, William Wickberg and wife Brandy of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Bill VonSteenburgh of Monticello, and John VonSteenburgh of Eldred; five daughters, Bonnie Myers of Middletown, Kathy Zentz of Eldred, Jackie Sisco and husband Rodney of North Carolina, Theresa Draxler at home, and Lena Porter of Middletown; many grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Myers; a brother, Clifford Doughty; and a sister, Viola Shaw.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, August 21 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22 at the Eldred Congregational Church. The Rev. Richard Hotzler will officiate.
Burial will be made in Montoza Cemetery, Eldred.

Sebastian F. Carleo
Ret. from Dept. of Sanit., 88
Sebastian F. “Buster” Carleo of Yulan passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2007 in Winter Springs, Fla. He was 88.
The son of the late Francesco and Maria Carleo, he was born October 14, 1918 in Ravenswood.
Sebastian proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941-1946, becoming a sergeant and earning several medals. He retired from the City of New York Department of Sanitation in 1980.
A family statement said, “Sebastian was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.”
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Louise, at home; his two sons, Thomas Carleo and wife Denise of Queens Village, and Scott and wife Laurie of Flushing; four daughters, Kathryn and husband William of Las Vegas, Nev., Laura and husband Vincent of San Diego, Calif., Patricia and husband Craig of Winter Springs, Fla., and Jennifer and husband Shawn of Pond Eddy; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Josephine Cawlo of Malverne.
He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Vincent, Frank and Joseph; one sister, Mary; two daughters, Barbara Marie and Lisa Marie; and a grandson, Jason.
A memorial service will take place at the convenience of the family.
The National Cremation Society performed cremation. Burial will be made in St. Anthony of Padua’s Cemetery, Eldred.
Muriel Powell
Ret. salesperson, 78
Muriel Powell of Barefoot Bay, Fla., formerly of Liberty, a homemaker and retired salesperson at Newman’s Fashions of Liberty, passed away in Sebastian, Florida on Saturday, August 18, 2007. She was 78.
The daughter of Louis and Gertrude Gerson Zipper, she was born on September 22, 1928 in Monticello.
She was a member of the Swan Lake Synagogue and the Pythians.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Powell, at home; three sons, Jay Powell of New York, Brian Powell of Bloomington, Indiana and Glenn Powell of Atlanta, Georgia; one daughter, Roberta Esposito and her husband, Rinaldo, of Gloversville; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Swan Lake Synagogue Cemetery, Hy-sa-na Rd., Liberty, on Wednesday, August 22, at 2 p.m. Rabbi Ben Zion Chanowitz will officiate.
Funeral arrangements are by Ramsay’s Funeral Homes Inc., Liberty.
Harry Gallagher

Harry J. Gallagher of Callicoon Center, a retired employee of the Yaun Company in Liberty and the Gibber Poultry Farm in Kiamesha Lake, died Friday, January 12, 2001, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Harry J. and Loretta Helfrich Gallagher, he was born June 11, 1928, in Scranton, Pa.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Callicoon Center Fire Department and St. George's Church in Jeffersonville. He was formerly active in the Boy Scouts of America Troop #106, Barbershop Quartet and the Happy Footers Square Dance Club.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Disotell Gallagher, at home; three sons, Michael Gallagher and Harry J. Gallagher, both of Houston, Tex., and Shawn Gallagher of Staunton, Va.; a daughter, Diane Williamson of Flagstaff, Ariz.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including David and Diane Staves of Jeffersonville; and a sister, Marita Crane of Watkins Glen. He was predeceased by two sisters, Loretta Sweeney and Bernadette Gallagher, and a grandson, Christopher Kornacki.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. George's Church in Jeffersonville with Father Robert Nee, O.F.M. officiating.
Burial will be made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville.

Donn Kaarlsen, 61
Donn Kaarlsen of Hollywood, Fla., a longtime area resident, died Sunday, December 10, 2000, at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 61 years of age.
The son of the late Edward G. and Elaine Masker Kaarlsen, he was born July 4, 1939, in Southfields.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Mona Fein, at home; two brothers, Edward J. Kaarlsen of Georgia and Clarke Kaarlsen of Wurtsboro; two sisters, Jean Norris of Wisconsin and Beverly Kaarlsen of Wallkill; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Kaarlsen.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, at the Community Bible Church Chapel in Port Ben Road, Wawarsing.
Interment of the cremains will be private.

Ruth M. Gray of Monticello, a retired operator for the New York Telephone Company and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at her home. She was 79 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles and Nellie May York Powell, she was born January 13, 1923, in Woodridge.
Mrs. Gray was a member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by a son, Walter S. Conklin of Monticello; four grandchildren, Keith, Lori, Amy and Karen; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, William, Kenneth and Ralph Powell, and a sister, Beulah Kirtack.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating.
Burial will be made in the Hurleyville Cemetery in Hurleyville.
