MR Track Supt. 67
Robert Merton Sr. of Smallwood, a track superintendent for the Monticello Raceway and a longtime area resident, died Sunday, December 23, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 67 years of age.
Born August 6, 1933, in Brooklyn, he was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #561, F.&A.M.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Veronica Vetter Merton, at home; four sons, Robert Merton Jr., Thomas Merton, Michael Merton and Gregory Merton, all of Monticello; a daughter, Veronica Merton of Smallwood; five grandchildren; and many friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Tony Dworetsky
Ret. Truck Driver, 82
Tony Dworetsky of Ferndale, a lifelong area resident and a retired truck driver for the Sullivan County Department of Public Works, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 82 years of age.
The son of the late Steven and Anna Lamatsky Dworetsky, he was born January 18, 1918, in Brooklyn.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of St. Peter's Church in Liberty.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Laura Loughrey Dworetsky, at home; two sons, Steven Dworetsky of Ferndale and Anthony Dworetsky and his wife, Gina, of Danbury, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Art Mapledoram of Monticello; three sisters, Kathryn Sawyer and Sophie Waryha, both of Ferndale, and Vera Sarakwash of Oradell, N.J.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, James Dworetsky.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial was made in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.

Edna J. Soller
Homemaker, 86
Edna Jessie Soller of Narrowsburg, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at her home. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Charles and Jessie Tyler Eggler, she was born July 27, 1914, in Tyler Hill, Pa. She was the widow of Charles Nicolas who died in 1966 and George Soller who died in 2000.
Mrs. Soller was a member of St. Tammany Chapter No. 492, Order of the Eastern Star, in Callicoon; St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg and a charter member of the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Narrowsburg. She formerly served on both the Town of Tusten and the Narrowsburg Central School election boards.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Grace and Jack Estes of Hemet, Calif., Charles and Peggy Nicolas of Danville, Ind., and Arthur and Betty Nicolas of Elizabeth, N.J.; a sister, June DeMauro of Narrowsburg; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating.
Burial will be made in the Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

Shirley Graubard

Shirley Evlyn Laskowitz Graubard of St. Augustine, Fla., a former 10-year resident of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and formerly of Wurtsboro, died suddenly Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at her home. She was 75 years of age.
The daughter of the late Abraham and Beatrice Laskowitz, she was born January 26, 1926, in Woodridge. She was the widow of Gerald L. Graubard who died in May 1990.
Retiring to Florida in 1989, she moved from Pembroke Pines, Fla., to St. Augustine, Fla., to be near her family.
In a family statement, it was said, "Shirley's life's work was her family and she will be deeply missed by all. She devoted her life to being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and friend and her passing will leave a void in the lives she deeply touched."
She is survived by three sons, Robert Graubard of St. Augustine, Fla., David Graubard of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mitchell Graubard of East Hartford, Conn.; two granddaughters, Allison Graubard of San Diego, Calif. and Lyndsay Graubard of Berkeley, Calif; a daughter, Chris Williams of Wurtsboro; cousins including special cousins, Gloria Mann of Montvale, N.J., and Herbie Reich of Suffern; and many friends, including Frances Friedland of Hollywood, Fla. She was predeceased by a son, Marc Graubard (twin of Mitchell) and a cousin, Sylvia Reich Wile.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home in Monticello.
Burial will be made in the Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery in Monsey.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Margaret Stacklum and Thomas Helms, 12 Grand St., Wurtsboro, beginning on the evening of March 30 and ending Monday evening, April 2.

Dorothy "Dot" Candee of Nashville, Tenn., a teacher in the Jeffersonville and White Sulphur Springs school districts who retired in 1971, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. She was 98 years of age.
The widow of Allen Henry Candee who died in 1969, she was born in Franklin Township, Pa.
She spent most of her life in Liberty.
Mrs. Candee is survived by a daughter, Pat Candee of Nashville, Tenn.; a nephew, Dennis Howard of Girard, Pa., and two nieces, Jean Groves and Edith Konnerth, both of Erie, Pa.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later time in Erie, Pa.

Maria Elisa Gandulla of Woodridge, a retired Oceanside laundry worker and a 42-year area resident, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. She was 72 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ramon and Martina Gandulla, she was born January 1, 1929, in Puerto Rico.
She is survived by her husband, Ernesto Gandulla, at home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rafael and Helen Gandulla of Monticello and Ramon and Lucy Gandulla of Woodridge; two sisters, Inocents Balesa of Long Island and Maximina Gandulla of Puerto Rico; a brother, Hipolito Gandulla of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday at the Church of Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne with Father Lynch officiating.
Interment was made in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.
Edgar L. Owens

Edgar L. Owens of Liberty, a retired construction worker of water tunnels for the New York City Board of Water Supply and a 28-year area resident, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at his home. He was 71 years of age.
The son of the late Dallas and Leanna Tatum Owens, he was born April 17, 1929, in Roseboro, N.C.
Mr. Owens was a member of Local 147 Laborers International Union of North America.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Pinckney Owens, at home; four sons, Randy Owens of Port Jervis, Gordon Owens and his wife, Dana, of the state of Florida, Anthony Owens of Liberty and Anthony Wallace of Brooklyn; four daughters, Marsha Owens Jackson and Maureen Owens, both of Monticello, Kim Stafford of Jersey City, N.J., and Tanya Wallace of Liberty; three sisters, Anne L. Owens of New York City, and Luray Davis and Minnie Bell Freeman, both of Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Pinckney of Loris, S.C., and Sam Davis of Fayetteville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by three sisters, twins Elnora Owens and Eldora Gans and Queen Esther Frederick.
Services were held Wednesday at the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty with the Rev. Ruth Sellers officiating.
Additional services will be held Saturday at the Sams Springs A.M.E. Zion Church in Roseboro, N.C., followed by burial in the Roseboro Cemetery in Roseboro.
Francis I. Griffin
Ret. Mechanic, 70
Francis I. "Frank" Griffin of Tillson, a retired NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 3, mechanic, and a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Francis I. Sr. and Dora L. Barnes Griffin, he was born November 26, 1930, in Poughkeepsie.
A U.S. Coast Guard veteran of the Korean War, he was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a life member of the North American Hunting Club.
Mr. Griffin is survived by a daughter, Debbie Savoie of Opelousas, La.; two sisters, Helen Scott of Tillson and Dora Williams of Wurtsboro; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and dear friends, Tom Smith of Tillson, Frank Weist of Esopus and Robert Demier of Arizona. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.
Graveside services and burial will be held at noon on Tuesday at the Rosendale Plains Cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Fogg officiating.
LeRoy J. Griggs
Ret. AHRC Driver, 64
LeRoy John "Jack" Griggs of Wurtsboro, a retired driver for AHRC of Ellenville, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home. He was 64 years of age.
The son of Lois Levy Griggs and the late LeRoy Martin Griggs, he was born January 10, 1937, in Newark, N.J.
Mr. Griggs was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Community Church of Wurtsboro.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna Griggs, at home; two sons, LeRoy J. Griggs Jr. of Texas and Michael J. Griggs of Monticello; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robyn and Clifford Collins of Ellenville and Christine and Michael Stanton of Auburn; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Clifford Collins Jr., both of Ellenville; his mother of New Jersey; a sister, Alice Pecoraro of New Jersey; and a brother, Raymond Griggs of Middletown.
Services were held Thursday at the Community Church of Wurtsboro with the Rev. Robert Hoag officiating.
Burial was made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
