U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

William King
Retired Porter, 78

William King of Liberty, formerly of Narrowsburg, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late Joseph James and Marion McLoughlin King, he was born July 13, 1922, in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
Mr. King had worked as a porter and groundskeeper at various Sullivan County resorts. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by the staff of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center where he had lived for the last several years.
Services were private.
Burial will be made in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Ramsay's Funeral Home in Liberty.

Wesley H. Brandin
Ret. Svc. Mgr., 75

Wesley H. Brandin of Wurtsboro, a retired service manager, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown. He was 75 years of age.
He was born December 26, 1925, in Brooklyn.
Mr. Brandin was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro, the Holy Name Society of the church and the Mamakating Senior Citizens. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Brandin was also a member of the Mamakating American Legion Post #1266 in Wurtsboro.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Carmela Nicosia Brandin, at home; three sons, Joseph Brandin, Salvatore Brandin and Gabriel Brandin; and three grandsons, Anthony, Michael and Matthew.
Friends may call at the the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan St., Wurtsboro on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph's Church, Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro, with the Rev. Peter Madori officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mamakating First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 525, Wurtsboro, N.Y. 12790 or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 628, Monticello, N.Y. 12701.

Margaret Kiessling
Homemaker, 87

Margaret Kiessling of Smallwood, a homemaker, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at her home. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth Nichter Zittel, she was born January 29, 1914, in the Bronx. She was the widow of Herman Kiessling who died June 6, 1975.
Very active in her community, Mrs. Kiessling was a member of the Mothers of Bethel, the Bethel Senior Citizens, the Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, AARP and was a Sullivan Country Nutrition Site member.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Swinarski of Raleigh, N.C.; three nieces; three nephews; a cousin and a sister-in-law.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday with the Rev. Audrey Pedersen officiating.
Burial will be made in the family plot at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Bethel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, White Lake, N.Y. 12786.

Michael L. Ciago
Ret. Custodian, 70

Michael L. Ciago of Livingston Manor, a retired custodian of Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn and an 11-year area resident, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at the Seelig Division of Community General Hospital in Harris. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Michael and Catherine Loporachar Ciago, he was born September 10, 1930, in New York City. He was the widower of Mary S. Ciago.
Mr. Ciago was a 36-year member of the Knights of Columbus Lodge #5522 and was a former usher at Regina Pagas Church, both in Brooklyn. He was president of the Residential Council at Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Neal D. and Heidi Caputo of Livingston Manor; two brothers, Donald Ciago and Peter Ciago, both of Staten Island; a granddaughter, Heidi Caputo; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor, with Pastor Darcy Smith officiating.

Angela Hewitt, 63
Church on The Rock Pastor

Angela Hewitt of Jeffersonville, a 10-year area resident, the co-pastor of the Church on The Rock and former pastor of the Fosterdale United Methodist Church, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 63 years of age.
The daughter of the late Philip and Constance Anna Maria Acito Borreggine, she was born July 11, 1937, in the Bronx.
She and her husband also owned the Solid Rock Bookstore on Route 52 between Jeffersonville and Youngsville.
Mrs. Hewitt is survived by her husband, Pastor Richard Hewitt, at home; two sons, Philip Gentile of Washington, N.J., and Steven Gentile of Teaneck, N.J.; a daughter, Suzanne Murphy of Millbrook; two step-children, Dakotah and Matthew Hewitt, both of Warwick; three sisters, Anne Borreggine of Bangor, Me., Geraldine Rugani of Marathon, Fla., and Margaret Yousif of Bayonne, N.J.; three grandchildren, Coner Murphy of Millbrook and Robert and Andy Cedeno, both of Washington, N.J; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with elders of The Church on The Rock officiating.
Burial was made in the Fosterdale Cemetery in Fosterdale.

James R. Burpoe Sr.
Ret. Night Mgr., 74

James R. Burpoe Sr.,a four-year resident of Glen Spey, a retired night manager of the A&P in Sussex, N.J., and former resident of Middletown and South Centerville, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at his home. He was 74 years of age.
The son of the late Raymond H. and Audrey Oatis Burpoe, he was born September 24, 1926, in Yonkers. He was the widower of Mary A. Melvin Burpoe.
Mr. Burpoe was an honorary member of the Slate Hill Fire Company, a former member of the Middletown Elks Lodge, and a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 464.
He is survived by five daughters, Margaret Avery of Illion, Marcella Bruning of Glen Spey, Ellen Melendez of Pine Bush, Kathleen Donatello of Utica and Margaret Simpson of Middletown; four sons, James Burpoe of Pine Bush, Michael Burpoe of California, Benno Larsen of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Patrick Burpoe of Middletown; a brother, Raymond L. Burpoe of South Centerville; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Maryann Burpoe and Georgeann Burpoe, a grandson, Howard Avery, and a sister, Edith Byrns.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home in Middletown with Father John Warfel officiating.
Burial was made in the Ridgebury Cemetery in the Town of Wawayanda.

Julie M. Kongslie
Homemaker, 81

Julie Mathea Kongslie of Warwick and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick following a septic shock from infection following hip replacement surgery. She was 81 years of age.
The daughter of the late Alf and Inga Andersen Kongslie, she was born August 17, 1919, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
She was an alumni of Empire State College; a 67-year member of Bethany Lutheran Church's confirmation class "Mission Circle" and was a parishioner of Our Savior Lutheran Church in West Palm Beach, Fla., for nearly 50 years. During World War II she worked as a civilian in the U.S. Army in New York City which was followed by many years on Wall Street. Ms. Kongslie was a member of the National and State Grange, the Bloomingburgh Restoration Foundation, the Warwick Historical Society and a 37-year member of St. Anthony Community Hospital Auxiliary.
In a statement by her daughter, Leslie, it was said, "Mother was unconventional and unconditional in her love of country, her Viking heritage and every living thing."
Ms. Kongslie is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and James Farney of Warwick and Mathea and Gerald Howard of Annapolis, Md.; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Franklin McCray of Agawam, Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Alf and Millie Kongslie of Staten Island; three grandchildren; four nieces; a nephew; cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Parkman Kongslie.
Cremation was private at the Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester.
Memorial services and interment will be held at a later date.

Frank G. Krafve, 70
Ret. Industrial Engr.

Frank G. Krafve, a 48-year resident of Middletown and a retired industrial engineer, died Monday, December 18, 2000, in Goshen. He was 70 years of age.
The son of the late Gustave and Nellie Krafve, he was born and raised in Worcester, Mass.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was stationed in Hawaii as a meteorologist. Mr. Krafve was a member of the one of the first classes to graduate from OCCC and earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Farleigh Dickenson University. He was employed for nearly 30 years at the Ford Motor Co. in Mahwah, N.J., where he was senior industrial engineer and plant manager when the plant closed in 1980.
Mr. Krafve was involved in many community activities. He played ball for Bob Maxwell, was a volunteer firefighter for the Silver Lake Fire District and was on duty when a fire burned down Lloyd's Supermarket and Department Store. He was also a member of the Middletown Elks Lodge.
He loved taking part in his daughter Susan's shop, The Catskill Hiking Shack in Wurtsboro. He loved helping out, talking with customers and observing small-town Wurtsboro, loved to fish, read, shop, watch the Yankees and spend time with his family.
Mr. Krafve is survived by four children and their spouses, Sherry and Michael Svec of Middletown, Susan and John Lavelle of Wurtsboro, Todd and Bonnie Krafve of Arlington, Tex., and Pamela Ann and Bill Mantis of Peoria, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Adam and Laura Svec, Danielle and Autumn Leigh Brown and Kelly and Katy Krafve; a sister, Helen Lindquist of Northboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Richie and Marie Krafve of Clinton, Mass; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bob and Jack Krafve, and a sister, Betty.
Private burial was made in Hillside Cemetery in Middletown.

Ruth Mary Coursen
Homemaker, 92

Ruth Mary Coursen of Shohola, Pa., died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at the Milford Valley Convalescent Home in Milford, Pa. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Norman and Barbara Bridge Sutherland, she was born November 5, 1908, in Shohola Township, Pa. She was the widow of Walter A. Coursen who died in 1978.
Mrs. Coursen was a member of St. Jacobi's Lutheran Church in Shohola, Pa.; the Town of Highland (Sullivan County) AARP; and for most of her life was active with the Shohola Volunteer Fire Company.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Daniel Allen of Shohola, Pa.; two granddaughters, Tauni Butterfield of Stratford, Conn., and Nicole Allen-Hickey of Churchville; a great-grandson, Conner Butterfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services at St. Jacobi's Lutheran Church and interment services at German Hill Cemetery in Shohola, Pa., will be announced in the spring.
