Evelyn M. Barnes
Ret. ER Nurse, 85

Evelyn Marjorie Barnes of Middletown, a retired emergency room head nurse and a lifelong area resident, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center in Middletown where she had worked for 40 years. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ralph and Nellie VanWert, she was born January 12, 1915, in White Lake. She was the widow of Harry Barnes.
She is survived by two nieces, Marie VanWert of Monticello and Susan Lutz of Springfield, Va.; a grand-niece, Tracy Kaylor of Monticello; and several great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, John VanWert.
Graveside services and burial were held Friday at the Wallkill Cemetery in Phillipsburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Horton Medical Center Cardiac I.C.U., Middletown, N.Y. 10940.

Lucille E. Phillips, 86
Ret. Owner of Resort

Lucille Elston Phillips of Lake Minnewaska, the retired owner of Lake Minnewaska Resort in Lake Minnewaska and a 66-year area resident, formerly of New York City, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at the A.G. Rhodes Wesley Woods Nursing Home in Atlanta, Ga. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Anthony and Lily Eberth Elston, she was born October 4, 1914, in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Phillips came to Lake Minnewaska in 1934 where she met her future husband. They purchased the Lake Minnewaska property in 1955 and upgraded the hotels adding a golf course, cross-country and downhill ski facilities and other amenities to make it a popular year-round resort.
She was a member of numerous local clubs and service organizations including the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, The New Paltz Study Club and New Paltz Garden Club. One of her greatest joys was the maintenance and perpetuation of the 19th century hiking and carriage trails on the original 10,000-acre Lake Minnewaska estate.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth B. Phillips Sr., at home; a son, Kenneth B. Phillips Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla.; a daughter, Susanne Elston Phillps of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Alva Virginia Kearney of Lexington, Kty.; numerous grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday at the Reformed Church of New Paltz in New Paltz.
Burial was made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery in Grahamsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Minnewaska Historical Society, c/o Kenneth B. Phillips, P.O. Box 908, New Paltz, N.Y. 12561. Part of the fund will be used to preserve the history of Lake Minnewaska as "One of America's Most Beautiful Resorts," and some will be used to republish the Minnewaska hiking map for which Mrs. Phillips wrote the introduction in the 1950s version, so others may enjoy and frequent the places so special to Mrs. Phillips and her family

Charles W. Avery Jr.
Short Order Cook, 19

Charles W. Avery Jr. of Beach Lake, Pa., died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 27, 2000, from injuries received in an auto accident on Route 652 in Wayne County. He was 19 years of age.
The son of Charles W. and Karen Dalesky Avery Sr., he was born May 6, 1981, in Honesdale, Pa.
He attended the Wayne Highland High School in Honesdale where he was on the wrestling team and football team. He had played baseball when he was younger on the Printery Pirates of the Wayne County Teeners League.
Mr. Avery attended the Beach Lake United Methodist Church, was a member of the Boyds Mills Hunting Club and worked part-time as a short-order cook at the Halfway House Restaurant in Honesdale, Pa.
He is survived by his parents of Beach Lake, Pa.; a sister, Melissa Avery of Beach Lake, Pa. (a student at Cedarcrest College); his paternal grandparents, Millard and Jean Avery of Beach Lake; his maternal grandmother, Rosa Dalesky of Honesdale, Pa.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Edward Avery, and his maternal grandfather, Joseph Dalesky.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Weightman, pastor, officiating.
Interment was made in the Beach Lake Cemetery in Berlin Township.

Marion Probst
Homemaker, 85

Marion Probst of Grahamsville, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at her home. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Marion A. Grant Davis, she was born July 1, 1915, in Cadosia.
Mrs. Probst was a charter member of the Grahamsville First Aid Squad and a former member and past Matron (1976) of Revonah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Liberty.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Herman Probst, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Thomas Osterhout of Hurleyville; three grandchildren, Jenifer Oles of Liberty and Benjamin and Andrew Osterhout of Hurleyville; and a great-grandchild, Sebastian Michael Oles.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Grahamsville First Aid Squad, Grahamsville, N.Y. 12740.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne.

Josephine M. Guzzo
Ret. Businesswoman, 73

Josephine M. Guzzo of Roscoe, a retired owner of the Fairway Inn in Roscoe and a 25-year area resident, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. She was 73 years of age.
The daughter of the late Ralph and Nancy Spataro Grella, she was born May 19, 1927, in Queens.
Mrs. Guzzo was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of BPOE in Montvale, N.J., the Women of the Moose in St. James City, Fla., and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rockland Hose Co. #1 in Roscoe.
She is survived by her husband, Edward J. Guzzo, at home; two sons, Michael Guzzo of Las Vegas, Nev., and Philip Guzzo of Roscoe; three daughters, Stephanie Guzzo of Greensboro, N.C., Julie Streng of East Meadow and Giniene Mojica of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Grella of Brooklyn; two sisters, Elizabeth Grella of Ozone Park and Patricia Hulsmann of Deer Park; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Saturday in the United Church of Roscoe with the Rev. Bridgette LeConey officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roscoe-Rockland Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Roscoe, N.Y. 12776.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe.

Louise M. Theysohn
Ret. From Equitable, 86

Louise M. Theysohn of Paradox, a former longtime employee of Equitable Life Insurance Company in Manhattan and former Callicoon resident, died Saturday, October 28, 2000, at the Glens Falls Hospital. She was 86 years of age.
The daughter of the late Karl and Marie VonKamalander Brenthel, she was born May 25, 1914, in Yonkers. She was the widow of Arthur Theysohn Sr. who died in 1977.
Mrs. Theysohn moved to Florida following the death of her husband and was in the process of moving to Paradox to live with her sister at the time of her death. She was a summer resident of Paradox for many years. Mrs. Theysohn enjoyed knitting and crocheting and attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake.
She is survived by her twin sister, Anna Sage of Paradox; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Jr. and Marion Theysohn of Normandy, Tenn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and James McaFee of Hawthorne, Fla.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vincent and Grace Theysohn of Callicoon; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Brenthel, in 1995, and two brothers, Charles Brenthel in 1978 and Frank Brenthel in 1982.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at noon on Friday at Holy Cross Church in Callicoon with Rev. Ignatius Smith officiating.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Callicoon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Local arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.

Frank Ospina, 56

Frank Ospina of Monticello and Lake Butler, Fla., died Sunday, October 29, 2000, in Lake Butler, Fla. He was 56 years of age.
The son of Eva Gonzalez Ospina and the late Miguel Ospina, he was born June 20, 1944, in Panama.
He is survived by his mother of Monticello; a brother, Eddie Ospina of Monticello; two sisters, Mariela Anglin of Middletown and Damaris Rundle of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Humberto Ospina.
Friends may call at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's R.C. Church in Monticello with the Rev. Robert Ginel officiating.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons St., PO Box 7E, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057.

Elsie I. Rose
Ret. Cook, 92

Elsie I. Rose of Andes, a retired cook for Erpf's Estate in Arkville and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, October 23, 2000, at the O'Connor Hospital in Delhi. She was 92 years of age.
The daughter of the late Silas W. Sr. and Rose Ruff Lacey, she was born October 1, 1908, in Livingston Manor. She was the widow of Howard J. Rose who died May 22, 1993.
In a family statement, it was said, "She will be remembered as a woman who was born in a log cabin on the Cattail Road. She was a farm wife who baked bread, hunted, fished, bowled, crocheted and square danced."
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Stephenson of Jeffersonville, Evelyn Rose of Livingston Manor and Isabel Ackerley of Lew Beach; two brothers, Silas W. Lacey Jr. of Afton and John Lacey of Downsville; two sisters, Elizabeth Skimerhorn of Harpursville and Josephine Mosier of Ballston Lake; eighteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Ronald Rose and a daughter, Florence Applegate.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with the Rev. Dan McCollister officiating.
Burial was made in the Beaverkill Cemetery in Beaverkill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Andes Emergency Squad, Andes, N.Y. 12731.

Frances S. Plenn
Ret. Bookkeeper, 82

Frances Stern Plenn of Northeast Philadelphia, Pa., a retired bookkeeper and procurement clerk for the U.S. Government, died Monday, October 23, 2000. She was 82.
She was the widow of Martin Plenn.
Mrs. Plenn was a member of the Deborah and Eleanor Berry Memorial Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by four children, Hilde Sham and her husband, Bruce, of Oreland, Pa., Paulette Browne of Monroe, Ted Browne of Wurtsboro and Murray Plenn and his wife, Dorothy, of North Cape May, N.J.; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Sarah Stern; eight grandchildren, Natalie and Lori Browne, Andrew, Mitchell and Frederick Plenn and Amanda, Seth and Mallory Sham; and a great-grandchild.
Services were held in Philadelphia, Pa.
