Susan Keiser
Attorney, 59
Always a fighter, always a giver, Susan Keiser left this world peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2007 following a long fight with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was 59.
The disease, which can manifest itself in a variety of ways, attacked Keiser’s brain in the form of a tumor.
But, according to her daughter, Jennifer, “She lived much longer than anyone thought she would. They gave her eight months and she lived three years.”
Susan never gave up doing what she loved, but her fight with the deadly brain tumor eventually precluded her from practicing law or serving on the board of trustees at Sullivan County Community College, two of her passions.
After beating it once, the disease came back in the fall of 2004. Keiser took an aggressive medical approach, which included radiation to the brain.
“After that, she became less and less capable,” her daughter said. “We were fortunate to be able to keep her at home. She remained aware up until the end.
“When I would call, she would say, ‘Hi kiddo, what are you doin?’ and then sometimes say ‘Goodbye,’” Jennifer recalled yesterday from her parents’ Livingston Manor law office.
Keiser was the daughter of Harold and Beatrice Loren, former owners of Lincoln Farm Camp in Roscoe, and the daughter-in-law of Jack and Betty Keiser, former owners of Keiser Equipment in Livingston Manor.
The wife of Michael S. Keiser, she was an attorney in the law firm of Keiser & Keiser of Livingston Manor and Ardsley, since 1978.
“They were law partners but had different hobbies, which I worried about as a kid,” Jennifer recalled. “But they were very tight, very much in love.”
Keiser was a member of the Sullivan County Charter Commission and a Trustee of Sullivan County Community College from 1996 until 2004.
“I am deeply sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Sue Keiser. She served on the Sullivan County Community College Board of Trustees and the SCCC Foundation where she gave unselfishly of her time and financial resources to assist the college, especially the students,” Dr. Mamie Howard Golladay, president of SCCC, said. “She was most concerned that students have every opportunity to be successful in their college education. She will certainly be missed.”
She was also a founder and past president of the Orange-Sullivan Women’s Bar Association, a State Treasurer of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, a founder of the Sullivan County Youth Council and Planned Parenthood of Sullivan County, a member of the board of Congregation Agudas Achim of Livingston Manor, and a founder of both the Sullivan County Scenic Coalition and Project Manor.
She was a candidate for Family Court Judge of Sullivan County in 1992, losing the election by just 76 votes of 29,000 cast.
Sullivan County Democratic Party Chair Timothy Hill remembered Keiser as a go-getter.
“She ran a valiant campaign,” he said. “She was very bright and a real worker. She was one of those people [who] if you called her after 9 a.m. she was up and already gone.
“We are very sorry to hear of her passing, it’s just terrible,” Hill said.
Keiser became a lawyer through apprenticeship in her husband Michael’s law office and took and passed the NYS Bar Examination in 1977 without having attended law school. She received a B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.A. from NYU and a Ph.D. from the Fielding Graduate Institute. Before becoming a lawyer, she was a teacher in the Monticello Middle School. She was also the program director of Lincoln Farm Camp for 16 years and, in her youth, a choreographer’s assistant to Martha Graham and Jerome Robbins in New York City. She taught Conflict Resolution courses at John Jay College of Criminal Justice for several years. In fact, her course became a required course for promotion to detective at one police precinct in NYC! She was an adjunct professor in the Sociology Department.
And in a fitting tribute, both her children were trained as lawyers.
She is survived by her husband; her mother; two children, Jennifer Keiser Gordon of Brooklyn and Jonathan Keiser of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren, Jacob Keiser, Suzannah Keiser, and Benjamin Keiser Gordon.
A memorial gathering will be held at 3 Farm Road, Ardsley on Saturday, February 3 at 2 p.m.
An additional memorial service may later be conducted in Livingston Manor.
As per her wishes, her body has been donated for medical and scientific purposes to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial contributions be made to Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley, 178 Church Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601; to the Sullivan County Community College Foundation in Loch Sheldrake; or to My Sister’s Place Shelter, 2 Lyon Pl., White Plains, NY 10601.
