Peter H. Bell Sr., a 32-year resident of Highland Lake, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001. He was 72 years of age.
The son of the late Maria and Stefan Popowitsch, he was born July 20, 1928, in Rode, Romania.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he owned the Pine Hill Lodge in Highland Lake for 24 years. He was a great community contributor through the Town of Highland Lions Club and the Town of Highland Business Association. He was also a bus driver, custodian and soccer coach at the Eldred Central School.
In a family statement, it was said, "He was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed tremendously by all who had the privilege of knowing him."
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Veronika Bell, at home; three children, Loretta of Yulan, Peter Jr. of Kinston and Renate of Summerville, S. C.; and a grandddaughter, Heidi Mayer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's R.C. Church in Yulan with the Rev. Evan Greco officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 63, Eldred, N.Y. 12732.

Daniel DeFalco
Ret. Jeweler, 78
Daniel DeFalco of Highland Lake, a retired jeweler for Monroe Jewelers in Monroe and a nine-year area resident, died Monday, January 8, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh. He was 78 years of age.
The son of the late Aniello and Filomina Cardone DeFalco, he was born September 16, 1922, in Cliffside Park, N.J.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. DeFalco is survived by his wife, Lucy Grassi DeFalco, at home; a daughter, Lorraine Conway of Highland Lake; three sons, Daniel De Falco Jr. of Glendale, Charles DeFalco of Cuddebackville, and James DeFalco, at home; a sister, Mary Camera of Maspeth; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 East Main St., Port Jervis. A vigil wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's R.C. Church in Shohola, Pa., with the Rev. David Cramer officiating.
Burial will be made in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred.
Florence Christian
Homemaker, 87
Florence Christian of Liberty entered into rest on December 19, 2006 in Middletown Park Manor. She was 87.
The daughter of Charles and Flora Ballam Dowell, she was born April 16, 1919 in Grantham, England. She was the widow of Leonard William Christian.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Parksville United Methodist Church, the British War Veterans of America, the New York Branch British Legion (NYC), and the British War Veterans of America-Nassau Branch of the Royal British Legion (NYC). She was a past president of the Golden Park Senior Citizens of Liberty, and a member of the Livingston Manor Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her three sons, William Christian of Livingston Manor, Anthony Christian of Queens and Edward Christian of New Windsor; her daughters include Florence Marshall and Ann Saunders of Largo, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Nellie Green, Emily Dickson, Winifred Reddish, and Alice Blissett; and two brothers, Ernest and Charles Dodwell.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Parksville United Methodist Church or to the Salvation Army.
A graveside service was held December 26 at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale.
Arrangements were made under the supervision of Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home.
Bronislaw Wolyniec
Retired ConEd Employee, 85
Bronislaw Wolyniec of Cochecton passed away Friday, December 22, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 85.
The son of Walter and Pauline Wolyniec, he was born August 29, 1921 in Ukraine.
Mr. Wolyniec was a retired Con-Ed employee, and a member of St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Jeffersonville, and St. Joseph's Church in Yonkers.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Golub Wolyniec, at home.
Funeral services were held December 27 at St. George's R.C. Church in Jeffersonville with Father Ignatius Vu officiating.
Burial was made in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yonkers.

Vilma “Billie” Elkins
Founder, Kings Catering, 87
Vilma “Billie” Elkins of Livingston Manor passed away Saturday, December 23, 2006 at home. She was 87.
The daughter of Frank and Vilma Pirchann Gyuracska, she was born April 3, 1919 in New York City.
Vilma started Kings Catering House of the Catskills in Livingston Manor in 1951 and ran it until her retirement in 1999. She was a member of the Liquor Dealers Association and a founding member of the Professional Business Woman's Association.
Survivors include her husband, Gregory “Skip” Elkins of Livingston Manor; a son, Edmund F. King of Livingston Manor; a very special loved one to “Billie,” Gail Simpson; and one nephew, Gary George and his wife, Margorie, of New Jersey.
She was predeceased by a brother, Albert George, and his wife, Gerta.
A private visitation will be held at the family's convenience with services by Msgr. William Collins.
Burial will be made in St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Nurse’s Aide, 68
Queenie E. Armstead of Monticello, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, December 21, 2006 at Catskill Regional Medical Center. She was 68.
The daughter of the late Cecil Brown, she was born February 9, 1937 in Charlotte, N.C.
She was employed as a nurse's aide at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris.
She was the widow of John William Armstead who died October 9, 1999.
Survivors include two sons, John Armstead and his wife, Charone, of Forestburgh and Gary Armstead and his wife, Tracy, of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; four daughters, Betty McCalay and her husband, Robert, of Bethel, Beverly Ellison of Virginia, Donna Darling and her husband, George, of Forestburgh and Linda Jones and her husband, Matthew, of Virginia; a sister, Bessie Mae Brown of Monticello; nine grandchildren, Ellan, Gabriela, Justin, Bryce, Faith, Dwayne, Matthew, Sabrina and Alicia; nine great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Brown.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Ramsay's Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. Mervin Armstead officiating.
Burial was made in Rock Ridge Cemetery, Monticello.
Albert Cowles
Mechanic, Skaters World, 77
Albert Cowles of Ferndale passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, December 23, 2006. He was 77.
The son of Mr. and Eva Adams Cowles, he was born March 2, 1929 in Hartford, Conn.
He was a mechanic for Skaters World, a member of the Sullivan County Airplane Club, and held an Amateur Radio License. He was a member of the Sullivan County Radio Control Club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
Survivors include his companion of 35 years, Ann V. Blake and her children.
Friends may call from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 7, 2007 at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne.
A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 7 at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Pinto officiating.
Joseph F. Devlin
Ret. Postal Employee, 85
Joseph Francis Devlin of Wurtsboro, a retired postal worker from Massapequa, Long Island, died Thursday, December 21, 2006 at his home. He was 85.
The son of the late Joseph F. Devlin and Lillian Quigley Devlin, he was born September 8, 1921 in New York City.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion Post #1266, Mamakating, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4947, Mamakating.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Nunn Devlin, at home; one son, Joseph F. Devlin and his wife, Teri of Miller Place; four daughters: Susan Foster and her husband, Bill of Newburgh, Christine Shazar and her husband, David, of Valley Stream, Janice Barry and her husband, Scott, of Laramie, Wyo., and Patricia Cioffi and her husband, Joseph, of Dallas, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors and burial of cremains were held Thursday at the Sullivan Co. Veterans Cemetery, Liberty with Fr. John Tran officiating.
