Francis Chapman
Computer Artist, 62

Francis Chapman of Fallsburg, passed away on April 25, 2007 in his home. He was 62.
Francis was the son of William D. and Pauline A. Newell Chapman. He was born November 27, 1944 in Suffern.
He was a Computer Artist and Photo Archivist for the SYDA Foundation for the past 20 years.
He was an Army Combat Veteran who served our country during Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
A family statements reads, “Francis was always cheerful and never said No. He was always willing to lend a hand.”
Survivors include his siblings, Bill Chapman, Margi Chapman and Daniel Chapman, all of West Haverstraw, Jacki Wightman and her husband, Bill of Tunkhannock, Pa., Susie LaFrancois of Stony Point, and Timi Chapman of West Haverstraw; and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by both his parents.
A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Donations may be made in Francis’s name to The SYDA Foundation, Attn. Pamela Spache, PO Box 600, South Fallsburg, New York 12779.
Arrangements were under the direction of Colonial Memorial Funeral Home.

Robert Mannino
Construction worker, 52

Robert Mannino, a construction worker and resident of Liberty, died on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 52.
The son of George and Esther Brino Mannino, he was born on October 17, 1954 in New York City.
He is survived by a cousin, Mary Ann Blaiss of Liberty.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
Funeral arrangements are by Ramsay’s Funeral Homes Inc., Liberty.

Violet Spangenberg
Ret. School Custodian, 76

Violet J. Spangenberg, a 20-year resident of Forestburgh and a school custodian for seven years in Plano, Tex., before her retirement in 1978, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., following a long illness. She was 76 years of age.
The daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel Phillips Straley, she was born in Port Murray, N.J., where she grew up. She lived in Greenville for 13 years and Sache, Tex., for seven years before moving to Forestburgh.
She is survived by her husband, John Spangenberg, at home; five sons, Edward Spangenberg and Richard Spangenberg, both of Otisville, Floyd Spangenberg of Forestburgh, and Joseph Spangenberg and Larry Spangenberg, both of Cuddebackville; four daughters, Joyce Simmons of Middletown, Brenda Freer of Pine Bush, Sandra Haggerty of Cuddebackville and Sonja Roberts of Bonham, Tex.; 27 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Robert Spangenberg.
Friends may call at the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St., Branchville, N.J., on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment will be made in the Branchville Cemetery.

Tillie Hoffman
Homemaker, 93

Tillie Hoffman, a former 25-year resident of Bloomingburg, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late Maurice and Bella Lichtman Hoffman, she was born September 30, 1907, in Brooklyn.
She is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Sawasky of Bloomingburg and Eva Polanger of San Rafael, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, David Hoffman.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Family Council of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center, P.O. Box 671, Liberty, N.Y. 12754.

Marie A. Pollen
Ret. NY Tel Super, 93

Marie A. Pollen, an 85-year resident of Liberty and a retired supervisor for New York Telephone in Liberty with 40 years of service, died Wednesday, January 10, 2001. She was 93 years of age.
The daughter of the late James and Mary Agnes Costello Murphy, she was born November 2, 1907, in New York City. She was the widow of Irving Pollen who died July 12, 1983.
Mrs. Pollen was a member of St. Peter's Church, Court Mary Anthony of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Peter's Rosary Society, and the Sullivan County Golf Club all in Liberty, and the Telephone Pioneers.
She is survived by two nephews, John Monahan and his wife, Fran, of Catskill, and Allan Albright of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; three grandnieces and four grandnephews; 15 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and a great-great-grandniece. She was predeceased by two nieces, Jane Reinshagen and Lynne Marie Albright.
Friends may call at the Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:45 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Church in Liberty with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.
Burial will be made in the Liberty Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church, 264 N. Main St., Liberty, N.Y. 12754.

Barbara Goldfarb
Tax Receiver, 75

Barbara Goldfarb, long-time Monticello resident and Town of Thompson Receiver of Taxes, died Sunday, March 4, 2007. She was 75 years old.
Kenneth, her husband of 53 years, predeceased Barbara two years ago.
She is survived by four children, spouses and grandchildren, Mark Goldfarb and Joan Wilson and their children, Zoe and Madeleine, of Croton, James Goldfarb and Helen Rados and their children, Eli and Joanna of Harris, Lisa Goldfarb and Dermot Liddy and their children, Rory and Ezra of Arlington, Mass. and Adrienne and Jim Austin of Arlington, Mass. as well as many cousins and friends.
As her many friends, her children, and her children’s friends can attest, Barbara’s home was known for good food, fun, hospitality, gentle acceptance, and lively discussion.
Her ready smile, common sense, wisdom and inner strength brought comfort to family, friends and neighbors. There are many children and adults in the Town of Thompson and several states and various European countries washing dishes with Barbara Goldfarb election campaign sponges, or wearing the gloves, mittens, and sweaters and playing with the finger puppets she knitted.
Barbara and Kenneth were community activists and participated in many political campaigns, and, most recently, were active in SPECS (Special Protection for the Environment of Sullivan County). Barbara was loved and respected by all who knew her. Services will be held at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home 388 Broadway Monticello, on Wednesday, March 7 at 11 a.m. Rabbi Ben Chanowitz will officiate.
Burial will be in the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery Thompson Rd. Monticello.
Shiva will be held Wednesday following the internment, Thursday and Friday starting at noon and Sunday starting at noon.

Jean Byrne
Restaurant Worker, 82

Jean Byrne of Yulan, passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2007. She was 82.
Jean lived a full life surrounded by friends and family.
Born to Ella Newton and Joseph Kennedy on December 6, 1924,
Jean was raised in Manhattan and the Bronx with her sister, Marion O’Neill. She worked at Schraft’s Restaurant for more than 15 years.
She moved to Yulan in 1974 where she worked at the Eldred Preserve for over 30 years.
Jean will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew her and were touched by her friendship. She made strong friendships that lasted lifetimes, from the Yorktown gang, the Golden Girls, the Rockaway crew, her Eldred Preserve and Colonial friends and to the special love she had for her Archie and Paula.
She leaves behind her daughter, Mariah (Patricia) Hochhauser; son, John Byrne; her grandchildren, Lisa Hochhauser, Jana Burnette, Glen Hochhauser, Sean and Patrick Byrne; great-grandchildren, Sloan, Jeremy, Alexa, Andrew and Kennedy Burnette and Jenna Olson; her nieces and nephews, Jo-Ellen Pearson, Christine Pageau, Robert (Bobby) and Stephen O’Neill; and great nieces and nephews, Sean, Ian, Owen, Robert and Caitlin; and her extended family, Paula Heckler, Alan Hochhauser, Cindy Byrne, Jeremy Burnette, Janette Fleszer, Jeannie Olson, Michael Pearson, William (Billy) Pageau, Lynne O’Neill and Katherine Horecky. Jean’s family extended to include so many close friends. She was truly blessed.
Jean is predeceased by her husband, John Byrne; her sister, Marion O’Neill; and her parents, Ella Newton and Joseph Kennedy.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, in Saint Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Yulan.
Interment will be at St. Anthony’s Cemetery by her family at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Legion Ambulance Corps, Eldred.
Funeral arrangements are by the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Barryville.

Gladys Chudik
Retired teacher, 89

Gladys Chudik of Mileses, entered into rest on March 1, 2007. She was born on March 9, 1917. She was 89 years old. She was predeceased by her late husband, John D. Chudik.
Gladys was a preschool teacher prior to her retirement. She had many accomplishments in her life and held much pride in receiving her Childhood Development Certificate from SCCC at the age of 80 in 1997.
Gladys touched many lives with her sense of humor, her warm, loving personality, and her incredible inner strengths. She will be deeply missed by her family and her friends.
She is survived by her children, Bonnie and Brian Szawiola, of Mileses; Robin McElroy, of Callicoon; John and Ellen Chudik of Mileses; and Laurie and John Masten of Jeffersonville; nine grandchildren, Sheri Papp of Cleveland, Ohio; Justin McElroy of Callicoon, Kevin McElroy of Callicoon; Danielle, Colleen and John Chudik of Mileses; Naomi Houghtaling of Callicoon; and Annalise and John Masten of Jeffersonville. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Alexandra Papp of Cleveland, Ohio; Joseph Perrault of Cleveland, Ohio; and James McElroy of Hortonville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the “Miss Gladys Preschool Scholarship Fund” c/o the First National Bank of Jeffersonville, Callicoon, NY 12723.
Memorial services were held Sunday at the Stewart - Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon. Funeral services were held yesterday at the funeral home.
Burial was to be made at the Fremont Center Cemetery, Fremont Center.
