The wedding announcement of Mayimuna 'Maya' Pettiford and Soloman J. Joseph, II is made by the Groom's parents; Vincent J. Joseph of Brooklyn Heights, NY (formerly of Watkins Glen, NY and founder and President of Seneca Design Co. in New York City) and Catherine Stevens Joseph of Huntington, NY (formerly of Valois, NY, fashion designer for Halston and currently a designer under her own label). The Bride's parents are Robert T. Pettiford of Brooklyn, NY (a retiree of the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City) and Bonnie McGuire, also of Brooklyn, who works for American Airlines. The Groom is the grandson of the late Soloman J. and Marie Sahadi Joseph of Watkins Glen, NY, who were owners of Finger Lakes Trucking Co. in Watkins Glen and Olean Transportation Lines in Elmira, NY. The Groom's maternal grandparents of Valois, NY, are Elaine C. Stevens (a retired Watkins Glen School Teacher) and the late James T. Stevens, who worked for the Schuyler County Department of Agriculture. The couple was married on September 12, 2004 on the Promenade of Brooklyn Heights, overlooking the Manhattan skyline and a few blocks from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lebanon, where the Groom's paternal grandparents married in 1927. The Promenade is also a place that played an important part of their courtship days while they were students at St. Anne's School. After the wedding ceremony, the couple 'jumped over the broom,' a custom from Colonial Days symbolizing the beginning of a new life, sweeping away the old, and welcoming the new. The Bride is a graduate of Vassar College and holds a Masters degree from Columbia University. She is completing her doctoral studies in Counseling Psychology at Temple University. The Groom obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, the Kenbar Institute of Film and Television. He has made documentary films (one in Hammondsport, NY) and his photography has been nationally published in such magazines as, łOn the Go.˛ He is founding partner of Critical Mass, a marketing and advertising company. His avocation of surfing has taken him to the corners of the world in search of, 'that perfect wave.' The couple now resides in Brooklyn, NY.
