Ward and Mary Lou Mitchell of Horseheads, NY marked their 55th wedding anniversary with a trip to Cape Cod on August 28, 2003. Ward Mitchell and the former Mary Lou Cornwell were married August 28, 1948 at the Baptist Church in Elmira, NY. The couple has 4 children: Sharon, Sandra, Douglas and Darlene. There are 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Ward is retired from Verizon Telephone Co. and Mary Lou is a homemaker.

MITCHELL, Ward A., age 87 of Breesport Rd. in Horseheads passed away after an extended illness on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. Ward was born April 17, 1925 in Elmira to the late James and Lola (Church) Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou (Cornwell) Mitchell; daughters and son, Sharon Root of Breesport, NY, Sandra (John) Tupper of Breesport, NY, Darlene (Jeffery) Houghton of Lowman, NY and Douglas Mitchell of Elmira Heights, NY; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; sister, Elsie Spies of Long Island, NY; brother, Rho (Beverly) Mitchell of Albion, NY; brother-in-law, Ronald (Shirley) Cornwell of Gillett, PA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ward was also predeceased by his granddaughter, Amber Tupper. Ward attended Pine Valley United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of WWII and was retired after 42 years with NY Telephone/Verizon. He was a 50 year member of the Breesport Vol. Fire Department. He was also a member of NY Telephone Pioneers, the Amphibious Forces-Southern Tier Chapter and the American Legion Bentley Trumble Post #442 in Horseheads. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 2-4:00 p.m. and again from 6-7:00 p.m. His service will take place there at the funeral home at the conclusion of calling hours at 7:00 p.m. Burial service with military honors will take place at a later date in Scotchtown Cemetery in Erin. Those wishing may remember Ward with memorials to the Breesport Vol. Fire Department, PO Box A, Breesport, NY 14816.
