John and Myrle Knapp of Elmira, New York marked their 55th wedding anniversary on July 31, 2003.

The couple has four children; Jackie, Jaynie, John and Judi.

There are six grandchildren.

Mr. Knapp retired from Gamrod-Harmon and Mrs. Knapp was a homemaker.

Obituary of Myrle Knapp:

Knapp, Myrle E., "Yai Yai", was born February 10, 1925 in Silvara, PA, the daughter of the late John F. & Essie C. (Grose) Place. She went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 24, 2014, peacefully at St. Josephs Hospital (SNF) surrounded by her family. She was greeted at Heaven's gate by her loving husband of 59 years, John (1/4/2008), beloved daughter, Jackie (4/5/2013), and was the last of eight sisters and one brother. She is survived by her children: Jaynie Laprade, John & Lesley Knapp, and Judi & Paul Bedzyk; grandchildren: Dan (Olga) Knapp, Jack Knapp, Amanda (Caleb) Drake, Allison Knapp, Ashley Knapp, Matthew (Brianna) Bedzyk and Mitchell (Sarah) Bedzyk; great-grandchildren: Lily Grace Knapp and Joshua Lucas Drake; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a host of others who referred to her as their "Yai Yai". Myrle was a faithful member of Elmira Christian Center and retired from the Elmira Christian Academy as a kindergarten teacher in 1987, after 18 years of dedicated service. She was a die hard Boston Red Sox fan, loved chocolate, coffee, and her word searches. Myrle had an intense love for music, especially when it was sung or played by her children or grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to gather at Elmira Christian Center, 235 E. Miller St., Elmira, NY on Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 3:00 - 6:30 p.m. Funeral services celebrating her life will follow the visitation. Rev. Dave Leandre, Rev. David Cook, and Rev. Brian Harris will officiate. Interment will take place at the convenience of her family in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Elmira Christian Center c/o Bereavement Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Olthof Funeral Home, Inc.

Obituary of John Knapp:

KNAPP, John, of Elmira, NY, was ushered home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 4, 2008, with his family and Pastor at his side. He was born August 18, 1929 in Elmira, NY, the son of the late Jack N. and Helen (Parraras) Knapp. His brother, Nick Knapp; sisters, Mary Novak and Ann Mirras also predeceased him. He married the love of his life, Myrle E. Place, July 31, 1948 in Nashville, TN. They have enjoyed 59 wonderful years of life and love together. His survivors include his loving wife, devoted friend and amazing caretaker, Myrle; much-loved children, Jacquelyn C. Knapp, Jayne C. Laprade, John P. (Lesley A.) Knapp and Judith A. (J. Paul) Bedzyk, all of Elmira, NY; adored grandchildren, Daniel J. Knapp, Jack L. Knapp, Amanda Lynn (the banjo girl) Knapp, Allison Marie (the bumble bee) Knapp, Ashley Elizabeth (the sunshine girl) Knapp, Matthew J. (has the bat) Bedzyk, and Mitchell A. (with the pitch) Bedzyk. He is also survived by a host of other relatives, church family and many friends. He retired from the wallpaper and paint business after many years of dedicated service. Formerly a renowned jazz saxophonist and musician in Elmira and the surrounding communities. John gave his life to the Lord on May 29, 1959 at the Pentecostal Tabernacle, at which time he transitioned from jazz to Jesus! He then became very involved in the music ministry of the church, the Elmira Christian Center, directing the choir and the orchestra for many faithful years. Two thrills of his life were driving the Sunday School Bus #9 and teaching in the teen department. He lived as he taught. His life demonstrated his favorite chapter in the Bible, I Corinthians 13, the Love Chapter. Family and friends are invited to call at the Elmira Christian Center, 235 East Miller Street, Elmira, NY 14904, on Monday, January 7, 2008, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of John's life will be orchestrated on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at 12:00 (noon). His Pastor, the Reverend Brian Harris, will officiate. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family in the Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in the name of John Knapp may be directed to the Elmira Christian Center Bus Ministry. Envelopes will be available at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY 14904.
