RICHARD L. PREBLE, 73, died at 8:55 p.m. Nov. 5, 2006, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Lima to Claude and Cleo Antrim Preble, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 3, 1956, he married
Therese L. Minaugh, who died June 6, 2004.
Mr. Preble had been a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Lima, Elida and Cridersville. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Lima, and its St. Vincent DePaul Society, where he served as treasure. He was a 1950 graduate of Lima South High School. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from Oct. 10, 1950, to Sept. 30, 1954. He spent his life in service of others and serving the Lord. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a friend of many.
Survivors include four daughters, Laura (Chris) Preble-Klich, of San Diego, Linda (Mark) Boyed, of Columbus, Barb (Scott) Lovett, of Lima, and Ann Preble, of Columbus; two sisters, Judy Goodman and Sundra (Danny) Critchfield, both of Lima; and six grandchildren, Darrin Preble, Connor Boyed, Austin Klich, Noel Klich, Reed Lovett and Emily Lovett.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Risner; and infant grandson, Neil Alan Bucholz; and an infant son, Richard Preble Jr.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin 10 a.m. today at St. John Catholic Church, Lima. Father William J. Rose will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Gethsemani cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, 692 S. Main St., Lima, OH 45804, or St. John Catholic Church.
Lima
WORTHY SLAYTON, 64, died at 11:41 a.m. Nov. 8, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center.

Sidney
DORIS N. SMITH, 84, died at 1:35 a.m. Nov. 7, 2006, at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.
She was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Greenville to Leo R. and Ethel Steele Nelson, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 20, 1943, she married
Lloyd O. Smith, who survives in Sidney.
Mrs. Smith retired as a history and social studies teacher, having taught in the Beaverdam, Bluffton and Ayersville school systems. She was a 1940 graduate of Beaverdam High School, a 1945 graduate of The Ohio State University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and received her master's degree from Bowling Green State University. Many of her students have become teachers themselves. She and her husband had lived in Beaverdam, Defiance, Maxston, N.C., and South Padre Island, Texas. They maintained friendships in each location and were trustees for the Chapel by the Sea on South Padre Island.
Survivors also include a son, Stephen (Teresa) Smith, of New Bremen; twin granddaughters, Erin R. and Molly N. Smith; a sister-in-law, Audrey L. McClurg, of Springfield; and a niece, Sharon M. Swedlow, of Cleveland.
Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen. The Rev. John W. Tostrick will officiate. The body has been cremated.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Van Wert
R. EVELYN STEELE, 69, died the evening of Nov. 7, 2006, from injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. Pastor David Ray will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Van Wert.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ARTHUR E. VALENTINE, 82, died at 5:07 p.m. Nov. 5, 2006, at Plus Health Care Center.
He was born May 13, 1924, in Kenton to Burt and Gladys Carter Valentine, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Valentine had been a construction worker for Ashland Oil Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include five children, Victoria (Steve) Valentine-Fay, of Lima, Stanley Valentine, of Upper Sandusky, Carol Lee (Larry) Deal, of McComb, Billy (Betsy) Valentine, of Findlay, and Joseph Valentine of Lima; 14 grandchildren, Mikey, Kyle and Richie Fay, Angie, Aubrey, Chad and Jessie Valentine, Ricky, Terry and Larry Deal Jr., and Brendon, Bret, Billy and Bobby Valentine; two stepchildren, Rex (Allie) McCoullough, of Bellefontaine, and Theresa (Mark) Valentine of Indian Lake; seven stepgrandchildren, Chad, Jeff, R.J., Austin, Nathan and Brandon Valentine and Meadow McCoullough; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Valentine.

HERMAN WILSON "SLIM" WHEELBARGER, 91, died at 8:57 p.m. Nov. 7, 2006, at Lima Convalescent Home.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Paul Lee Clemons will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park cemetery Mausoleum.

ALONZA CHARLES LUSTER Jr., 57, died at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 18, 2006, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born Sept. 30, 1949, in Lima to Alonza Charles and Loretta Jackson Luster Sr. His father and stepmother, Ila Luster, survive in Cleveland. His mother, Loretta McDonald, preceded him in death. He had been married
to Rosa Roberson, who survives in Lima. He married
Mattie Forest, who died Jan. 19, 2000.
Mr. Luster had been a forklift operator at Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1219.
Survivors also include four sons, Shondale M. Luster, Alonza C. (Christina) Luster III, Shannon L. Jackson and LaQuint C. Luster, all of Lima; two daughters, Ruth I. Luster-Moore, of Lima, and LaDonna V. Luster, of Cleveland; 25 grandchildren; eight brothers, Craig (Audrey) McDonald, Steve McDonald, Richard McDonald and Michael McDonald, all of Lima, Mark McDonald, of Chicago, Jerome (Harvetta) Luster, of Cleveland, Rilous Luster, of Lima, and Lewis (Lori) Luster, of Cleveland; and two sisters, Debra Hall, of Lima, and Tracy (Leroy) Welch, of Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Flowers Luster; his stepfather, Early McDonald; and a sister, Druiscilla Luster.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at New Morning Star Baptist Church. The Rev. C.M. Manley will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

WILLIAM F. POOL, 68, died at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 19, 2006, at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.
He was born May 26, 1938, in Delaware, Ohio, to Clarence and Marie Pool, who preceded him in death. On June 28, 1959, he married
Susan K. Lewis, who survives.
Mr. Pool retired from Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant.
Survivors also include two sons, William (Margaret) Pool and Kevin (Lori) Pool, both of Lakeview; five grandchildren, Amanda Wibley, Bradley (Carlena) Pool, Ryan Pool, Ashley Pool and Kendell Pool; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maryalice Henry, of Springfield, and Nancy (Chet) Hartley, of West Mansfield; a brother, Jim (Norma) Pool, of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Wibley; a sister, Dorothy; and three brothers, Clarence Jr., Harold and Raymond.
Graveside services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Marlboro cemetery, Delaware, Ohio. Pastor David Buchenroth will officiate.

WILLIAM J. NEWLAND, 82, died at 12:21 a.m. Dec. 20, 2006, at Triumph Hospital, Lima.
He was born April 2, 1924, in Lima to Homer and Ruby Nance Newland, who preceded him in death. He married
Betty Ruth Chamberlain, who died July 14, 1996. On Dec. 19, 1998, he married
Maxine Gillette, who survives.
Mr. Newland retired as an inspector from the Allen County Engineers Office. He was a member of Indian Lake Community Church and had been a member of South Side Christian Church, Lima. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, all in Lima. He was a volunteer at Lima Memorial Health System. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors also include two sons, Terry (Narda) Newland, of Mansfield, and Craig (Deborah) Newland, of Elida; a daughter, Vicki Newland, of Lima; two stepsons, Dave (Melody) Gillette, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Rick (Julie) Gillette, of Lake Orion, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Kathy (Larry) Cooper, of Beverly Hills, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Paul Hinds, Stephanie (Mike) Moore, Geoffrey (Kendra) Newland, Melissa Baisden, Derek Newland, Brett Baisden and Katie Newland; two great-grandchildren, Wayne Rupert and Elijah Newland; four stepgrandchildren, Shannon Gillette, Ryan (April) Gillette, Ross (Megan) Gillette and Kellie Gillette; and four stepgreat-grandchildren, Ariel and Brittany Moore and Christopher and Hayley Gillette.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two brothers, Donald and Doyt Black; three sisters, Mildred Kemmis, Ruth Gibbs and Evelyn Granger.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. The Rev. Doug Adams, Karen Blackburn and the Rev. John Ellington will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 1275.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
