Wapakoneta
EDWIN G. WEITZ, 89, died at 3 p.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Allen County to Edwin C. and Cora Dickson Weitz, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 20, 1948, he married
Wilma Merkle, who survives.
Mr. Weitz retired as owner/operator of Weitz Bike Shop, Wapakoneta, after nearly 50 years. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Wapakoneta, where he and his wife were involved with the Youth Fellowship. He was a member and former president of the Lions Club and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445, both in Wapakoneta. In 1994, he received the Wapakoneta Rotary Club's Vocational Achievement Award, which is given for outstanding achievement and dedication to Wapakoneta's youth. He had also been a scout leader for several years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He was awarded two bronze campaign stars. He was well known in the Wapakoneta community for his "service above self."
Survivors also include a son, Timothy (Beth) Weitz, of Fort Shawnee; three grandchildren, Annie, Brian and Nikki; and a sister, Joyce (Gene) Trimble, of Katy, Texas.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Don Weitz.
Memorial services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta. Pastor Greg Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Wapakoneta, with military rites by VFW Post 8445.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Delphos
DONALD L. BAUMGARTE, 79, died at 5:45 a.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at VanCrest Health Care Center.
He was born July 5, 1927, in Delphos to Sylvester John and Coletta A. Wannemacher Baumgarte, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Baumgarte had been a quality control inspector at Fruehauf Corp. for 37 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, Delphos. He was an Army Air Forces veteran. He was an avid golfer and a prolific reader on the history of American wars and military equipment.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Robert) Oldenkamp and Lorraine (Rolland) McCormick, both of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two sisters, Nancy (Ronald) Spieles, of Vandalia, and Sharon (Vincent) DeWitt, of Auburn, Calif.; a brother, Gerald Baumgarte, of Delphos; two grandchildren, Matthew and Mitchell McCormick, both of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Ryan Oldenkamp, both of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Baumgarte; a brother, Kenneth Baumgarte; and his loving companion of 37 years, Alice Bartz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. Father Melvin Verhoff will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by the Delphos Veterans Council.
Friends may call from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harter & Schier Funeral Home, Delphos.

St. Marys
DELORIS GILLILAND, 78, died at 11:05 p.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Miller-Long & Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys. The Rev. Mary Kay Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, near Moulton.

Wapakoneta
GALE E. SCHMIEDER, 84, of Fruitland Park, Fla., formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 7 p.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center, Leesburg, Fla.
She was born Dec. 4, 1922, to Clarence and Pearl Staley Hern, who preceded her in death. She married
Bernard "Jake" Kiefer, who died in November 1967. She married
C.J. Schmieder, who died in June 1983.
Mrs. Schmieder was a homemaker and had retired in 1980 from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., St. Marys.
Survivors include a son, Wayne "Butch" Kiefer, of Fruitland, Fla.; a daughter, Sandy (Vic) Rosengarten, of Wapakoneta; five grandchildren, Greg (Lee Ann) Rosengarten, Jodi Allen, Shelley Labenz, Doug Kiefer and Tony Kiefer; four great-grandchildren, Danielle Harshbarger, Miranda Allen, and Devon and Joel Rosengarten; and a sister, Ilene Gehrlich, of Wapakoneta.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel; and four brothers, Walter, Venard, Merle and Delmar.
There will be no public services or visitation.

Van Wert
SHIRLEY MAE BURK, 71, of Montpelier, formerly of Van Wert, died at 6:35 p.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home, Montpelier.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. Pastor Gerald Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Greenbrier cemetery, Willshire Township.

Celina
ORVAL C. DICKE, 97, died at 5 p.m. Dec. 13, 2006, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
Private family services will be held Monday at Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home, Celina. The Rev. Douglas Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Swamp College cemetery, Celina.

BARBARA JEAN HEFNER, 57, died at 1:10 p.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at Richland Manor Nursing Home, Bluffton.
She was born March 30, 1949, in Lima to Eugene and Edna Furnish Dyer. Her father preceded her in death. He mother survives in Alger. On Oct. 12, 1984, she married
Daniel R. Hefner, who survives in Ada.
Mrs. Hefner was a homemaker. She was a member of Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church, Lafayette. She was a volunteer at Lima Memorial Health System.
Survivors also include a son, Trevor E. (fiancée Julie Muncy) Fruchey, of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Emily K. Hefner, of Ada; a stepson, Jesse B. Hefner, of Payne; two brothers, Robert Dyer, of Delphos, and William Dyer, of Dayton; a sister, Brenda Sue (James) Leffler, of Harrod; and three grandchildren, Alli, Morgan and Gabriel.
Services will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada. Pastor Neal Whitney will officiate.

Van Wert
LEOTA MAE YOUNG, 87, died at 5 a.m. Dec. 14, 2006, at VanCrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. Pastor Raymond E. Feeck will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Van Wert.

Wapakoneta
RALPH E. NESTER, 85, died the evening of April 25, 2007, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Wapakoneta to Edward and Anna Flaute Nester, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 24, 1947, he married
Anna Cosgrove, who died Jan. 16, 2001.
Mr. Nester retired as a machinist from Wapakoneta Machine Co., after 44 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1272, Wapakoneta, and United Auto Workers Local 105. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sue (Joseph) DeBartoli, of Oak Harbor; two sons, Donald (Cindi) Nester, of Elida, and Timothy Nester, of Wapakoneta; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Nester, of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Campbell and Clara Rose Nugent; and two brothers, Robert and Harry Nester.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. The Rev. Henry Albietz will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery.
