Findlay
HOWARD E. CARMEAN, 85, died Jan. 5, 2006, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 6, 1920 in McGuffey, to William and Della (Kissling) Carmean. He married
Margaret Zickafoose on May 12, 1947, and she died on Jan. 14, 2002.
Mr. Carmean retired from Cooper Tire & Rubber in 1983. He was an Army veteran having served in the Asiatic-Pacific service during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet (John) Fahl of Findlay and Margo Byars of Salt Lake City, Utah; a son Larry (Jan) Zickafoose of Dunkirk; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Homer, Charles, Louis and Gene; and sisters, Clara Gross, Gertrude Newland, Margaret Chalfin and Minnie Dysert.
Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay. Pastor Christopher Cravens will officiate.

Findlay
JAMES WILLIAM CHILD, 64, died the morning of Dec. 25, 2005, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.
He was born Aug. 12, 1941, in Findlay to James L. and Mary Louise O'Brien Child, who preceded him in death. His wife, Lynn Child, survives.
Mr. Child was a professor and former chairman in the Department of Philosophy at Bowling Green State University. He was also a senior research fellow at the Center for Social Philosophy at BGSU and a member of the board of the Philosopher's Information Center. He was a visiting fellow at the Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He held a Fulbright Lectureship at the University of Iceland.
From 1973 to 1986, he served as general counsel, vice president and chairman and CEO of Hancor Inc., Findlay. He and his wife were founding partners of CentraComm Communication and Aardvark Inc., both in Findlay, and he was a member of each of their boards. He also included lawyer, blacksmith and racecar driver among his many former occupations.
He was born and raised in Findlay and was the oldest of his siblings. He was an accomplished scholar, academician and businessman, with far-ranging interests, experience and education. He was a graduate of Findlay High School, The Ohio State University, Indiana University and the Harvard University School of Law. He was the author of several scholarly articles, books and chapters. His academic distinctions are too numerous to recount, but a few of these include: Globalization: Technology and the New Economy; Profit: Its Nature and Moral Features; Two Paths to Peace: Pacifism and Just War Theory in Contemporary World and The Moral Foundations of Intangible Property.
He voraciously read everything: classic fiction, contemporary detective, science fiction, law, history, current events, economics and business, popular coverage of science and especially technology, as well as philosophy. Though his professional and academic achievements were myriad, he will be remembered by his students, friends and family more as a devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather and for his enormous humor, wisdom and dignity.
Survivors also include a son, James R. (Laura) Child of Springboro; a daughter Laura Child (Douglas) McConnell of Cleveland; two grandsons, James Mitchell and John O'Brien McConnell; his stepmother, Stephanie Child of Rougemont, N.C.; a sister, Kathleen (Fred) Crates of Findlay; a brother, Richard (Lois) Child of Grosse Point, Mich.; a niece, Krista Crates (Mark) Miller of Findlay; and two nephews, James (Stephanie) Crates of Granville and Lucas Child.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Englewood, Fla.
CECIL EVANS JR., 74, died at 5 p.m. Jan. 5, 2006, in Englewood, Fla.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where arrangements are incomplete.
Lima
STEVEN P. GIBBS, 64, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Lima, died at 1:35 p.m. Jan. 6, 2006, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Lima to Paul V. and Ruth Black Gibbs, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 26, 1973, he married
Barbara Smith, who survives.
Mr. Gibbs was owner and manager of a retail store.
Survivors also include a daughter, Angela Gibbs of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Kathleen Heinz of Bean Station, Tenn.; and a niece, Lisa Heinz of Bean Station, Tenn.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Van Horn Funeral Home, Lakeview. Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Hill cemetery, New Hampshire, Ohio.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

FLORENCE HUMPHREYS, 93, died at 8:52 p.m. Jan. 6, 2006, at Van Crest Health Care Center, Delphos.
Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gomer cemetery on Sandy Point Road. The Rev. Brian Knoderer will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

TERRIE ELLEN KENNEDY, 54, died at 1:11 p.m. Jan. 3, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
Memorial services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Marimor Industries lunch room. The Rev. Gary Rode will officiate. There will be no visitation.

WANDA J. KOHNEN, 80, died at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 7, 2006, at Wapakoneta Manor.

WALTER NIEKAMP, 86, of Minster, died Jan. 6, 2006, at Otterbein St. Marys.

Ottawa
AMBER M. PESTER, 27, of Bellevue, formerly of Ottawa, died the morning of Jan. 6, 2006, after an auto accident on County Road 177 in York Township, Sandusky County.
She was born Dec. 4, 1978, in Lima to Kenneth and Susan Schroeder Pester, who survive in Ottawa.
Ms. Pester was a speech therapist for P.T. Services at St. Francis Hospital, Green Springs. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Bellevue, where she was the youth coordinator. She was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, and its Altar Rosary Society, and was a eucharistic minister. She was a 1997 graduate of Ottawa-Glandorf High School and a graduate of Bowling Green State University and Miami University, Oxford. She was a member of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
Survivors also include her fiance, Michael Meche of Westlake; two brothers, Todd (Michelle) Pester of Canal Winchester, and Matthew (Amy) Pester of Ottawa; a sister, Tammy (Eric) Deken of Continental; a nephew, Dylan Pester; two nieces, Madelyne and Mallory Deken; her maternal grandmother, Pauline Schroeder Smith of Ottawa; and her paternal grandparents, Charles and Virginia Pester of Miller City.
She was preceded in death by a grandfather, Gerald Schroeder.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Father Tom Hemm will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, with a Scripture service at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
